41. What Makes A Fat Man Fat?
This remarkable man saw at once that Banting s real trouble was obesity, not deafness, and put him on an entirely new kind of diet.
http://www.ourcivilisation.com/fat/chap1.htm
Eat Fat And Grow Slim by Richard MacKarness, M.B., B.S (1958) . What Makes A Fat Man Fat? PEOPLE CAN be divided into two groups according to the way they deal with the excess food when they eat more than they require for their daily expenditure of energy. In 1950 at the Royal Society of Medicine in London, Professor Sir Charles Dodds, who is in charge of the Courtauld Institute of Biochemistry at the Middlesex Hospital, described an experiment he had carried out. He took people whose weights had been constant for many years and persuaded them to eat double or treble their normal amount of food. They did not put on weight. He showed that this was not due to a failure to digest or assimilate the extra food and suggested that they responded to over-eating by increasing their metabolic rate (rate of food using) and thus burned up the extra calories. He then over-fed people whose weights had not remained constant in the past and found that they showed no increase in metabolism but became fat. So two people of the same size, doing the same work and eating the same food will react quite differently when they overeat. One will stay the same weight and the other will gain. We all know that this is true even without scientific proof and yet the fact has not been taken into account or explained by any of the experts who write popular books and articles about slimming.

New hormone may help treat obesity
August 30, 1999 Web posted at: 5:02 p.m. EDT (2102 GMT) In this story: Obesity: Genes at work Hormone-deficient mice Not so fast RELATEDS By Laura Lane (WebMD) The fat mice have done it again: They rapidly lost weight after receiving injections of a hormone produced by the brain, a new study suggests. This isn't the first time researchers have reported results that could lead to a new medication to treat obesity. But these scientists, who published their findings in this week's international journal Nature Medicine, are saying that this time the approach is different. In addition to curbing appetites, the hormone, called alpha-MSH, may encourage the body to store less fat, says co-principal investigator Dr. Ute Hochgeschwender of the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation in Oklahoma City.

In a letter to the United Nations agency that is meeting next week, Health and Human Services official William Steiger questioned the organization's findings, said they were based on faulty science, and called for changes to the report. The WHO report recommends eating more fruits and vegetables and limiting fats and salt. It also suggests governments limit food advertising aimed at children and encourage their citizens to eat healthier foods. Taxes and subsidies could be used to reduce the price of healthy food and make them more attractive to consumers, the report said. The International Obesity Task Force estimates that 300 million people worldwide are obese and 750 million more are overweight, including 22 million children under age 5.

What is Obesity ?
Obesity occurs when the body is storing too much fat in its adipose tissue. The adipose tissue is primarily located under the skin and on top of each kidney. Men tend to carry body fat in their chest, abdomen and buttocks (apple shape). A woman tends to carry body fat in her breasts, hips, waist and buttocks (pear shape).
The effects of the disease, in terms of death, disability and morbidity are devastating. Despite the enormous toll taken by obesity, however, the disease does not receive the attention it deserves from government, the health care profession or the insurance industry.
The United States spends billions on health care. Yet, the rates for obesity are escalating. The impact caused by type 2 diabetes, heart disease, arthritis, stroke and the other conditions caused by obesity are only going to escalate
The cause
I will show how obesity is caused and further, knowing the cause will automatically present the solution.

The most immediate consequence of overweight as perceived by the children themselves is social discrimination. This is associated with poor self-esteem and depression.

Campaigners say fast food does not have to be unhealthy The World Health Organisation has adopted an unprecedented policy on diet and health to tackle a global increase in obesity.
The voluntary plan was hammered out at talks in Geneva in the face of stiff opposition from lobbies such as the sugar-producing nations. It includes guidelines for urban planners on encouraging exercise as well as advice on healthy eating. Nearly one in six people worldwide is now considered overweight. The plan was approved on Friday and adopted by the 192-member World Health Assembly on Saturday. It is aimed at combating diseases linked to diet or lack of physical activity such as diabetes, heart disease, cancer, osteoporosis, malnutrition and tooth decay. The BBC's Imogen Foulkes in Geneva says this is the first ever attempt to regulate the world's eating habits. Among the suggestions featured in the plan, which is not legally binding, are:

You are in: Public Health Obesity Obesity Overview The foods we eat every day contribute to our well-being. Foods provide us with the nutrients we need for healthy bodies and the calories we need for energy. If we eat too much, however, the extra food turns to fat and is stored in our bodies. If we overeat regularly, we gain weight, and if we continue to gain weight, we may become obese. Obesity means accumulation of excess fat on the body. Obesity is considered a chronic (long-term) disease, like high blood pressure or diabetes. It has many serious long-term consequences for your health, and it is the second leading cause of preventable deaths in the United States (tobacco is the first). Each year, Americans spend billions of dollars on dieting, diet foods, diet books, diet pills, and the like. Another $45 billion is spent on treating the diseases associated with obesity. Furthermore, businesses suffer an estimated $20 billion loss in productivity each year from absence due to illness caused by obesity.
