Q. My 12 year old daughter is very overweight but she hardly eats a bite. Why is this? Nine times out of ten, it's because she's eating too many high calorie foods, like: commercial popcorn, pretzels, crisps, nachos, tortilla chips, coke, candy and chocolate, but not enough proper food. Suggestions
  • Make sure she eats a sensible breakfast and dinner and for lunch give her lots of sandwiches and 100 per cent fruit juice. Make sure she gets active. Maybe ask her to help you to get fit. Always set your daughter a good example in eating and exercise.

WASHINGTON (CNN) The Bush administration Friday announced a campaign to combat the epidemic of obesity in the United States through improved product labels, health education, and a partnership with restaurants to help steer people toward healthier menu choices. "It reflects our commitment to reversing this tragic obesity trend, in which far too many Americans are literally eating themselves to death," Health and Human Services Secretary Tommy Thompson said at a news conference unveiling the campaign. Thompson's comments were timed with a report from the Obesity Working Group of the Food and Drug Administration, stressing a theme of "calories count." The FDA, in accepting the group's recommendations, plans to take a variety of actions in response.

Obesity and diet pills By Dr. Mohamed Izham Mohamed Ibrahim THE HISTORY OF OBESITY DATES back to the Stone Age. The primary approaches to the treatment of obesity, from the time of Hippocrates until the 20th century , have principally involved changes in diet and exercise. In the current century, many new treatments for obesity, including drugs, have appeared. In general, obesity is defined as a body mass index greater than 30 kg/square metre. In clinical practice, it is considered a pathological disorder which could possibly lead to various illnesses. Today, weight loss is still of great interest to many and many such attempts to reduce weight by obese individuals are still regarded to be unsafe. Obesity, also called corpulence or fatness, is by far the most common effect of continued over-consumption of calories, more calories than are required to meet energy expenditure. Undoubtedly, many will agree that the most common cause of obesity is over-eating and poor eating behaviour. Indifferent lifestyles, coupled with the lack of physical activities, are frequently correlated to obesity, there is excessive accumulation of body fat in and on the body. This is due to the excessive calories which are stored as fat. Being overweight does not mean being obese. So when is someone considered overweight or obese? In general, if body weight is 10% more than the optimum weight for a certain height, a person is considered overweight. But if the weight us 20% more than the optimum weight, then he or she is considered obese.

Being fat at 40 cuts years off life
Study: Americans super-sizing at home, too American Heart Association MIAMI BEACH, Florida (AP) Bulletin from the medical front: Eating fast food and sitting hours on end in front of the TV are really terrible for the waistline. As obvious as this might sound, there actually is little firm scientific data to prove the point, especially against fast food. But now a large study released shows just how bad super-sized burgers and nonstop tube time can be for one's health. "Fast food emphasizes primordial preferences for salt and fat," said researcher Mark Pereira. "This may promote overeating." The project did turn up one surprise: While a lot of fast food is clearly bad for white people, it seems to make no difference at all for blacks. The reason for this is unclear, but the researchers said the data suggest that black people's diets are often just as unhealthy at home as they are at the drive-through window. So a lot of fast food doesn't make matters any worse than they already are. The analysis, conducted by Pereira of Boston's Children's Hospital, was based on a 15-year follow up of 2,027 whites and 1,726 blacks between ages 18 and 30 in Chicago; Minneapolis; Birmingham, Alabama; and Oakland, California. He presented the data at a meeting in Miami Beach of the American Heart Association.

By The Evening Chronicle Ideas on how to tackle the nation's problems with obesity, poor diet and lack of exercise were being discussed today at a government summit in London. The Diet and Exercise Summit, organised by the Department of Health, is to act as a "springboard" for proposals and actions on how to tackle key public health issues. The discussions by ministers and health experts will be used in a major public health White Paper to be published in the summer. The Government has stepped up efforts to tackle issues such as diet and exercise. Last week Chief Medical Officer Sir Liam Donaldson published a report aimed at increasing the amount of physical activity adults and children should take. WASHINGTON (Reuters) Obesity is the No. 1 health threat in the United States today, the head of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention said. While much of her time is spent preparing to fight anthrax, smallpox, and biological threats, and diseases like SARS and West Nile virus, the CDC's Dr. Julie Gerberding said Americans are much more likely to die from cancer, heart disease, and diabetes caused by smoking, eating too much and exercising too little. "Unfortunately, poor diet and a lack of exercise have almost caught up with tobacco as being the leading cause of death in the United States," Gerberding on Tuesday told a meeting of the National Health Council, which groups companies and non-profit health advocacy organizations. She cited statistics that show 65 percent of U.S. adults are either overweight or obese. In 2000, 38.8 million American adults were classified as obese, meaning their health is seriously at risk.
