The NDEP Business and Managed Care (BMC) Worksite Kit includes a number of lesson plans addressing a wide range of diabetes-related topics such as nutrition and physical activity, general medical care, emotional well-being, and cardiovascular health. Ideally, health care professionals or wellness coordinators should present the lessons based on these plans, but knowledgeable human resource managers and supervisors may also be able to deliver the material. The lesson plans can serve as a basis for a variety of health education activities, such as a lecture series on health issues, a diabetes support group, and a group of "lunch and learn" sessions. Lesson plans are now available in Spanish to help employers conduct health education programs for Hispanic and Latino employees. Each lesson plan is available in PDF format: Portable Document Format. The format of the overheads is indicated in the column above each section of overheads. Handouts are all PDF.

Media Type: Nutrition Facts Panel (Array) Objectives After completing this lesson, students will be able to:
Explain how to read and interpret the data on a Nutrition Facts panel.
Identify amounts and types of specific nutrients needed by teens expressed as both absolute values and percentages.
Illustrate ways in which nutrient information found on product packaging can help them as consumers to make more informed food choices.
Introducing the Lesson Tell students you have a riddle for them. On the chalkboard write, "This industry spends more money on advertising its products to teens than any other industry." Allow groups of students a chance to brainstorm and offer their hunches. After eliciting that the correct answer is the food industry, display examples of Nutrition Facts panels you have clipped from packages and brought to class. Remind students that since 1994, manufacturers of all food products have been required by law to include these labels on their product packaging. Pass the labels around, and allow students time to absorb the types of information these panels contain.

Nutrition Intervention Establishes Healthier Food Choices: A Summary of Food Consumption Among California's Adolescents Introduction In the fall of 1996, a unique research study measured a middle school nutrition education program's impact on food consumption of adolescents, ages 11 to 14. Researchers from the University of California at Davis designed the study to measure if positive changes in food intake occur after implementing Dairy Council of California's 7-lesson nutrition education program Exercise Your Options (EYO). Figure 1.
Reaching this age group with health messages to achieve positive behavior development is very challenging. It is difficult for most middle school students to recognize the long-term health effects of a poor diet. The ultimate goal of nutrition education is to bridge the gap between current eating habits and recommended eating habits for all ages. Methodology
As with all of Dairy Council's nutrition programs, EYO uses a behavior change model to help instill positive food choice behaviors (Figure 2). The focus of this research study was to measure if behavior change occurred, i.e. if middle school students positively changed their eating habits after receiving EYO instruction.
