    • What is a Vegan? Why Veganism? Vegan Nutrition
      What is a Vegan?
Vegetarians do not eat meat, fish, or poultry. Vegans, in addition to being vegetarian, do not use other animal products and by-products such as eggs, dairy products, honey, leather, fur, silk, wool, cosmetics, and soaps derived from animal products.
      Why Veganism?
People choose to be vegan for health, environmental, and/or ethical reasons. For example, some vegans feel that one promotes the meat industry by consuming eggs and dairy products. That is, once dairy cows or egg-laying chickens are too old to be productive, they are often sold as meat; and since male calves do not produce milk, they usually are raised for veal or other products. Some people avoid these items because of conditions associated with their production. Many vegans choose this lifestyle to promote a more humane and caring world. They know they are not perfect, but believe they have a responsibility to try to do their best, while not being judgmental of others.

Updated 8-23-99 Amy's Ferret Resource Page Table of Contents Ferret Fundamentals Ferret Supplies Online Ferret Nutrition and Foods Ferret Community ... Ferret Extras Well, I've had this ferret page up since January, 1998. It was a project for the Christmas holidays. I had just acquired my first ferret, Chloe, in September of 1997. (Chloe is the ferret featured in the background of this page.) Chloe was a stray the my uncle found in his front yard. Honest! I put this page together because I did a lot of research to learn about how to best care for my new pet and I wanted to put the best sites I found all together in one spot. I get a lot of email thanking me for my work on this site and offering wonderful suggestions. If you have a favorite site that I missed, PLEASE send an email to me.
If you've been a regular visitor to my site you may have noticed that I stopped all updates during the summer. I'm ready now to talk about why. Chloe died this summer. I took her to the vet as soon as I noticed that she was ill. They said that she was dehydrated, and admitted her to the "hospital" and began giving her fluids, but she died a couple of days later. It was really hard for me to deal with her death. She's the first pet I've lost in a long time. Anyway, the point is that I'll need your help to keep this page up to date. I haven't been reading the Ferret Mailing List, or checking the newsgroup. It's been too much of a reminder of Chloe. So I haven't been hearing about the great new websites that I'm sure are going up. If you know of one, please let me know. If you made it this far in my explanation, I want to thank you for listening. And, I hope, understanding. Amy

Linda Boeckner, Extension Nutrition Specialist, University of Nebraska Panhandle Research and Extension Center Previous Category Catalog Order Info The following information provides a quick look at what works best in nutritional care for the athlete. For more information consult a professional who is trained in sports nutrition. The goals of nutritional care for athletes are simple and straightforward. For the most part, nutritional care should:
    • ensure that athletes are properly hydrated during periods of active training and competition.
    • provide adequate calories to meet growth and development needs, if in youth and adolescent years, and the extra needs of the physical activity
    • supply nutrients from food
    • instill sound nutrition principles and practices that will last a lifetime.
The best eating habits for the athlete may be as follows:
  • Design a meal pattern that fits your daily cycle. Plan to eat several times a day using regularly spaced meals and snacks to help meet caloric and nutrient needs.
  • Eat a diet rich in complex carbohydrates (starches). Starchy foods such as pasta, breads, cereals, potatoes, corn, peas and others provide a major energy source to fuel your activities. These foods are also a source of fiber, vitamins and minerals.

I had the same thing with my yellow tang. It simply would NOT eat any greens I would put in the tank for it, until one day I lured it to the lettuce and now it loves it. My tang used to always follow the long 'feeding clamp' I used to use to get food down to my shrimp, so one day I put the clamp in the tank and the tang happily followed it as usual, and followed it right up to where the lettuce was, it took its first bite of the lettuce and it's been addicted to lettuce ever since. -Frankie From: Bo Williams
