Health Information for Teens
Check Your Nutrition: General Nutrition Good nutrition will help you have energy all day long and will give your body the major nutrients, vitamins, and minerals it needs. It will also help you stay strong for sports or other activities.
Take our quiz to see if you have good nutrition habits! For each group of statements below, choose one that best describes you: 1. Choose one: I diet a lot and don't let myself eat foods that I think are unhealthy. I eat healthy food most of the time, but I eat junk food once in a while, too. 2. Choose one: I eat when I'm hungry and stop when I am full most of the time. I don't always eat when I am hungry because I am always dieting. I eat even when I am not hungry. 3. Choose one: I don't think about nutrition and eat whatever I want. I think about nutrition sometimes and I try to eat mostly healthy foods. I think about good nutrition all of the time and only allow myself to eat healthy foods.

NUTRITION: GENERAL
EATING FOR ONE
By Barbara Theedom, RD, CDE
Member, Diabetes Dialogue Editorial Advisory Board Whether or not you are a swinging single, young or old, starting out or starting over, eating for one can be puzzling, especially when the single involved must eat. When diabetes is treated with insulin or pills, you must eat or suffer the consequences of low blood sugar. What to do? Traditionally, one family member is usually responsible for the majority of meal preparation, but all family members enjoy the benefits. But once you, or your family, have moved away from home, nourishing the body can become a chore or a bore. The younger person moving into his or her own apartment must learn to cope with the responsibilities involved, including groceries, meals, laundry and housework. Shopping and cooking can often become secondary to the demands of a career or social life. For the older person whose family has left the nest, cooking is just not the same. It takes years to adjust quantities down to one or two servings. If the older person has lost his or her spouse, cooking for one can be downright depressing. FINDING HELP Food is a focus in all cultures. Not only do we need it to live, but we use it to express affection and hospitality. Within the community, singles can access family and friends to help make meal time easier. My daughter, Jane, used to bike to her great-grandmother's house with supper in her bike basket; supper was prepared by Isabel, Jane's grandmother. Most towns have restaurants with senior's portions, some have MealsonWheels and/or WheelstoMeals for those who need them. These programs will either deliver a hot meal to those who have difficulty preparing their own meals, or will transport seniors who can't get around easily to a community centre for dinner. A relatively new program is the "community kitchen" where people meet, share costs and cook meals, taking home food for the freezer. But many of us prefer to eat at home.

GENERAL CLINICAL CORE COMPETENCIES
RANK 14) NUTRITION Rationale

Despite the importance of nutritional factors in health and illness, physicians frequently have been criticized for giving these factors inadequate attention. Internists, by virtue of their dedication to providing comprehensive care to their patients, should assess nutritional factors on a routine basis. Physicians, particularly general internists, also should be prepared to provide patients with basic advice regarding ways to optimize their nutritional status. All physicians also need to have at least a basic working knowledge of the principles of nutritional assessment and intervention. Prerequisites
Basic science course work on body metabolism, the respective roles of dietary fats, carbohydrates, and protein, and the need for vitamins and minerals.
Specific Learning Objectives
A. Knowledge: Each student should be able to describe:
1. key symptoms and signs that may indicate a nutritional problem.
2. nutritional problems that occur most commonly in adults.
3. common medical problems that can cause nutritional deficiencies.

Nutition is an area where there are innumerable opinions and no single opinion is correct. Much research has been performed on the subject and, although some is indeed conflicting, some basic principles and guidelines have emerged. For example, horses have different requirements than people and people have different requirements than dogs. Young dogs have different requirements than old dogs and exercising dogs have different requirements than lap dogs. Although dog food companies do a pretty good job at providing fairly well-balanced nutrition for the average dog, there are some conflicting issues that make them subject to scrutiny before one walks into a pet store and picks up just "any 'ole food."
  • For one thing, every dog food company needs to make a profit. Therefore, they need to use ingredients that are inexpensive enough for the food to be profitable because the consumer won't buy it if it is too expensive.
  • Secondly, the more shelf space taken up by a single company's brand of food, the more likely it is that the consumer will see the food and buy it in the first place. Most puppies, for example, do just as well on "adult" dog food as they do on "puppy" food as long as you know what to look for on a label. As long as the "fine print" on the label says that the food meets the nutritional requirements for growth, then you may feed it to your puppy. However, a company that sells food for both puppies and adults has twice the shelf space than one which sells only one type of food. Quality is a different issue and we will discuss that later.

(Someone I know has for many years not touched meat. She recently became very ill (I don't know the details). Concerned family took her to a nutritionist doctor who prescribed eating fish. She has recovered dramatically.) from a member of ivu-sci
It is practically impossible to answer questions such as this without full details of the illness and whether any form of medication (other than the advice to eat fish) was used. One cannot even say for certain whether the addition of fish to the diet was actually responsible for the recovery as there are cases of spontaneous remission. - another member of ivu-sci suggests that the problem described above might have been due to a lack of Vitamin b12 Where is a detailed table showing the percentage of various nutrients in all kinds of foods? from a member of ivu-sci

These FDA Food Labeling web pages address the labeling requirements for foods under the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act and its amendments. Food labeling is required for most prepared foods, such as breads, cereals, canned and frozen foods, snacks, desserts, drinks, etc. Nutrition labeling for raw produce (fruits and vegetables) and fish is voluntary. We refer to these products as "conventional" foods. For detailed information on dietary supplements, a special category of products that comes under the general umbrella of foods, but which has separate labeling requirements, see " dietary supplements Terms such as "functional foods" or "nutraceuticals" are widely used in the marketplace. Such foods are regulated by FDA under the authority of the Federal Food Drug and Cosmetic Act, even though they are not specifically defined by law.
