Overview
Scoliosis is defined as a lateral or rotary curvature of the spine. Scoliosis is common in most connective tissue disorders including Marfan syndrome, homocystinuria, Ehlers-Danlos, osteogenesis imperfecta, the MASS phenotype and mitral valve prolapse syndrome. Scoliosis is a feature of rickets, a condition in which bones become soft and decalcified. Scoliosis with no known cause is called "idiopathic" scoliosis. The term "idiopathic" scoliosis may becoming dated, as recent studies show a clear link between scoliosis and lowered bone densities.

Nutrition and Exercise: Healthy Balance for a Healthy Heart

How does what I eat affect my heart?
The food you eat can affect the way blood flows through your heart and arteries. A diet high in fat and cholesterol can gradually cause a buildup (called "plaque") in your arteries. That buildup slows down the blood flow and blocks small arteries. If the blockage happens in an artery that carries blood to the heart muscle, the heart muscle can die. That's a heart attack. If the blockage happens in an artery that carries blood to the brain, part of the brain can die. That's a stroke (also called a brain attack). The right diet helps keep your arteries clear and reduces the risk of heart problems and stroke. Keeping your heart healthy by watching what you eat isn't as hard as it sounds! Return to top
Tips for a heart-healthy diet
  • Eat less fat (especially butter, coconut and palm oil, saturated or hydrogenated vegetable fats such as Crisco, animal fats in meats, fats in dairy products).

http://www.vegsoc.org/health/
A Vegetarian Diet Improves Health Research has shown that a well-balanced low-fat high-fibre vegetarian diet is healthier for you and your family. As a vegetarian you could:
  • Reduce your risk from certain cancers by up to 40% Decrease the possibility of heart disease by over 30%
  • Restrict your chance of suffering from kidney and gall stones, diet-related diabetes and high blood pressure.
  • Lower your cholesterol levels and reduce health problems related to obesity.
  • Avoid fatal diseases such as nvCJD, Ecoli and food poisoning.
So why not eat your way to better health? Food for Life Vegetarianism is a healthy option but it is very important to have a well-balanced diet. You could stuff your face with chips and chocolate at every meal and be vegetarian but you wouldn't be doing your health much good. It doesn't have to be rabbit food either. A varied vegetarian diet will supply all the essential nutrients you need to be fit and healthy. Here are one or two useful tips - This simple nutrition pyramid shows what types of food we should eat and roughly in what quantity and proportion. Oils, butter and other fats are at the top because we only need small amounts. Bread, cereal, rice and pasta are at the bottom because we should eat these foods the most.

Part 1
(this page) Introduction A Healthy Vegetarian Diet Part 2 Heart Disease ... Bibliography/References
Introduction
A vegetarian diet is known to confer a wide range of health benefits . Research has shown vegetarians to suffer less heart disease, hypertension, obesity, diabetes, various cancers, diverticular disease, bowel disorders, gall stones, kidney stones, and osteoporosis (Dwyer, 1988). Vegetarian diets have also been used in the treatment of various illnesses, including rheumatoid arthritis and nephrotic syndrome.
A Healthy Vegetarian Diet
A typical vegetarian diet closely matches expert dietary recommendations for healthy eating, being low in saturated fat and high in fibre, complex carbohydrates, and fresh fruit and vegetables. The 1983 NACNE Report (National Advisory Committee on Nutrition Education) in the UK recommended a reduction in fat intake, particularly saturated fat, and an increased dietary proportion of polyunsaturated fats to saturated fats. An increased intake of complex carbohydrates and fibre and a decreased intake of sugar and salt were also recommended. The World Health Organisation (1990) has similarly recommended a reduced intake of fat and increased consumption of complex carbohydrates. Increased consumption of fruit, vegetables

ARTHRITIS TREATMENT by POTASSIUM, chapter I
by Charles Weber A series of articles about rheumatoid arthritis which discuss potassium nutrition and physiology.
The word "arthritis" = rheumatoid arthritis = RA in these articles (for a summation of potassium and copper nutrition, click here) OTHER CONTENTS II. Arthritis Research III. Arthritis and Potassium IV. Roles of Potassium in the Body V. Electrolyte regulation (sodium and potassium) ... When blood potassium is too high PREFACE We subscribe to the HONcode principles
of the Health On the Net Foundation It is my contention that potassium deficiency is either causing, or greatly making worse, rheumatoid arthritis, which I will shorten to "arthritis" in these articles. In assessing the possibility of this hypothesis people have little to go on. Virtually any textbook in the past would devote no more than a paragraph to potassium which would state that potassium is never deficient in the diet, or give one exception to the dozen or more known, or in some only under clinical conditions. The reason for this careless treatment of potassium is probably because potassium is present in almost all foods as grown in large quantities. Professionals think about it as if it were air or water. However even air and water can be deficient and if voluminous texts are not written about these deficiencies, it is because both deficiencies can be detected by our senses. Extremely powerful emotions and instincts impel people to correct these deficiencies immediately and at any cost. Potassium is odorless, colorless, and, in the usual concentrations, tasteless. There is no way to detect a deficiency and cell content can not even easily be assessed in the body by modern analytical procedures. Whole body cell content is virtually "invisible".

Many nutritionists argue that the type of high fat, low fibre diet promoted by McDonald's is linked to serious diseases such as cancer, heart disease, obesity and diabetes. The sort of diseases that are now responsible for nearly three-quarters of premature deaths in the western world. McDonald's respond that the scientific evidence is not conclusive and that their food can be a valuable part of a balanced diet. Some people say McDonald's are entitled to sell junk food in exactly the same way that chocolate or cream cake manufacturers do: if people want to buy it that's their decision. But should McDonald's be allowed to advertise their products as nutritious? Why do they sponsor sports events when they sell unhealthy products?
