No matter what your age, achieving and maintaining a healthy weight is one of the best ways to feel great and lower your risk of disease such as cancer, heart disease and diabetes. But how do you know if you're at a healthy weight? Using assessment tools such as The Body Mass Index and Waist/Hip Ratio will help you determine where you stand on the scale of things. Keep in mind though that there are factors other than weight that increase your risk of disease. Poor diet, exessive alchohol consumption, a lack of execise, smoking and the presence of high blood pressure are other important risk factors for disease. Body Mass Index
The Body Mass Index or BMI evaluates your weight in relation to your height. It helps to determine if you are at a healthy weight but is not a direct measure of body fatness. Long-term studies show that over all risk of developing chronic disease is generall related to, among other things, your BMI. Fill out the information below to find out your number.
*Note that the BMI does not apply to the following: Those under the age of 20, over 65, pregnant or nursing women or very muscular atheletes. If you are in one of these categories and want to asses your weight, I recommend that you consult with a registered dietitian. To find a dietitian in your community check out the website at www.dietitians.ca or call your local public health department.

Outpatient services include in-office endoscopy and large volume paracentesis clinics. In collaboration with specialists in interventional radiology, transplant surgery and therapeutic endoscopy, patients undergo sophisticated and complicated procedures such as TIPS and stenting of biliary strictures. Because we know that sorting through all the information available about liver diseases can be difficult, we occasionally offer educational seminars to provide straight, unbiased information. Our format is casual and friendly, with ample time allowed for participants to ask questions. Call our office for information about upcoming programs.

Recommendations References Any advice about the consumption of alcohol must take into account not only the complex relation between alcohol and cardiovascular disease but also the well-known association of heavy consumption of alcohol with a large number of health risks. One approach would be to recommend no consumption of alcohol. However, a large number of recent observational studies have consistently demonstrated a reduction in coronary heart disease (CHD) with moderate consumption of alcohol.

http://www.hsph.harvard.edu/nutritionsource/carbohydrates.html
Printer-friendly file Carbohydrates Going with the (Whole) Grain We've come a long way from the days when one of the knee-jerk answers to the question "What's a healthy diet?" was "Get a lot of carbohydrates." We now know that the staple of most diets, carbohydrates, aren't all good or all bad. Some kinds promote health while others, when eaten often and in large quantities, may increase the risk for diabetes and coronary heart disease. Carbohydrates are an important part of a healthy diet because they provide fuel for the body. Many foods rich in whole-grain carbohydrates are good sources of essential vitamins and minerals. What are Carbohydrates?
Carbohydrates come from a wide array of foods - bread, rice, beans, milk, popcorn, potatoes, cookies, spaghetti, corn, and cherry pie. They also come in a variety of forms. The most common and abundant ones are sugars, fibers, and starches. The basic building blocks of a carbohydrate are sugar molecules. Starches and fibers are essentially chains of sugar molecules. Some contain hundreds of sugars. Some chains are straight, others branch wildly. Carbohydrates were once grouped into two main categories. Simple carbohydrates included sugars such as fruit sugar (fructose), corn or grape sugar (dextrose or glucose), and table sugar (sucrose). Complex carbohydrates included everything made of three or more linked sugars. Simple sugars were considered bad and complex carbohydrates good, but the picture is much more complicated than that.

Nutrition for People with Huntington's Disease
Introduction Resources By Renette Davis with assistance from people on the Mailing List for Huntington's Disease
Introduction
Dysphagia is the most common cause of death in HD, either directly from suffocation or aspiration, or indirectly from starvation.
(From A Physician's Guide to the Management of Huntington's Disease by Neal G. Ranen, M.D., Carol E. Peyser, M.D., and Susan E. Folstein, M.D., published 1993 by the Huntington's Disease Society of America, p. 24.) Dysphagia means difficulty in swallowing. According to A Physician's Guide to the Management of Huntington's Disease dysphagia in Huntington's Disease appears to result from "difficulty with closing the mouth and chewing, mucus formation, choking on liquids, food gulping, difficulty with coordinating the sequence of swallowing, difficulty clearing the mouth of excess food after each swallow, and the unexpected inspiration of air." A new pamphlet entitled Huntington's Disease , published in 1996 by the Huntington's Disease Society of America, says on p. 17, "Nutrition is important in everyone's life, but takes on added significance in HD. People with HD require an unusually high number of calories to maintain their body weight. Maintaining, or even gaining, weight can help reduce involuntary movements and other symptoms, particularly in the later stages of HD." For this reason, we are trying to gather together cookbooks, recipes, ideas for finger foods, etc. for people with Huntington's Disease. We welcome suggestions from anyone who has experience with Huntington's Disease or with dysphagia. Send your suggestions to Renette Davis at:
