Tips On How To Have A Healthy Heart If an apple a day keeps the doctor away, what would it take to avoid a heart surgeon? Would you believe a good vitamin + mineral supplement and some omega-3 oil (canola, flax, fish) ? Add a diet naturally high in fiber but low in processed food and hydrogenation hardened fat. Maintain a good lifestyle (don't smoke, control waist size, some exercise and manage stress well) and you will improve your general health, and prevent or help heart disease. This website looks at the food, supplement and prevention side of the picture. Nutrition in medicine is my long-term interest, not my job, so this site doesn't generate money or sell anything. You'll find tips and info that may well improve your health, your "distance from disease". Science shows that a healthy diet is one with relatively unprocessed foods, with veggies and fruits, and with rice or grains that retain much of their original kernel- structure . Those are the foods that became scarce in Western diets. If you can't recognize part of the original food, the item is processed or refined.

Why a Type 2 Diabetes Page in a Heart-Health Site? Well, both are related to nutrition and both can be prevented or helped by the same foods and supplements. Type 2 diabetes is normally preceded by decades of slowly increasing insulin, then blood sugar and belt-size ... and it is always healthier to sit on your fat than have your fat sit on you Early prevention is very effective but there come a point when insulin production permanently breaks down. Smart nutrition can first prevent overweight and diabetes , and eventually heart disease Both conditions are epidemic with 1 in 13 Americans developing adult diabetes and 1/3 of those over age 60. Most will develop heart, kidney, nerve and blood vessel diseases for an amazing 1/4th of total "health" costs! Other countries have similar increasing rates. Later-in-life diabetes is an accelerating eventually one-way track to heart disease. What makes a diabetic? Simply put: when your pre-breakfast blood sugar ( plasma glucose) gets over 126 mg/dL (7 mmol/L). Another measure is when 2 hours

Alzheimer's disease is a degenerative disorder of the brain which causes progressive decline in memory and general cognitive abilities. Slowly and inexorably, the disease attacks nerve cells in all parts of the cortex of the brain, as well as some surrounding structures, thereby impairing a person's abilities to govern emotions, recognize errors and patterns, coordinate movement, and remember. At the last, an afflicted person loses all memory and mental functioning. There is no recovery. Apart from the progressive destruction of nerve cells, a wide range of abnormalities can be seen in the brains of patients who have died from Alzheimer's, including extracellular deposits of amyloid protein and microscopic tangles of fibrils inside nerve cells. Currently, there is no known cure for Alzheimer's Disease.
    Notes
The following supplements may be of benefit, especially in the prevention or earlier stages of the disease:
    • Carnosine has many uses and is a strong antioxidant. It has been shown to demonstrate neuro-protective properties and may be a useful supplement for sufferers of Alzheimers Disease.

Parkinson's disease is a progressive neurological disorder marked by the loss of brain cells that produce dopamine, a chemical key in controlling muscle activity. When dopamine levels are low, normally coordinated brain regions that control body movement become out of sync, leading to tremors, muscle rigidity, slowed movement and balance and coordination problems. levodopa is a precursor to dopamine in the brain, and the synthetic version can greatly alleviate patients' symptoms. It does not cure the disorder, though, and the efficacy of the drug diminishes with time.
Parkinson's Disease - Complementary Carnosine Therapy
The ultimate cause, on the atomic level, are toxic free radicals and their toxic metabolites, which damage certain cells in the brain. H2O2 and TPA (tetracanoylphorbolacetate) are such radicals, and they are able to kill brain cells prematurely. Carnosine has been shown to prevent these radicals and it is thus protecting the brain cells ( Kang et al. 2002 b

It is a rare researcher in the technical sciences who has not only the specific knowledge, but the interdisciplinary breadth of vision and concern for practical application to make their findings relevant to laypeople. Loren Cordain, Ph.D., Professor of Exercise and Sport Science at Colorado State University, admirably combines these qualities and has in recent years gained recognition as one of the central and most prolific individuals pursuing research in the emerging cross- disciplinary field of Paleolithic diet. During the time the internet's PALEODIET email list was active (late 1990s), Professor Cordain was a primary supporter of the group, making numerous contributions. The list functioned primarily for scholars and interested onlookers, with discussion devoted to scientific research on paleoanthropological findings on early human diets, as well as to modern clinical research with a bearing on diets modeling them today. Loren has graciously allowed us to reproduce here a number of his scientifically referenced postings from the Paleodiet list and has approved edits to make them stand on their own apart from the listgroup, and to be as clear as possible for the layperson. We invite you to sample here his discussions of the research findings bearing on the question of healthy omnivorous diets, and the pitfalls of diets discordant with our genetic inheritance from the human evolutionary past.

They said vitamin E worked against heart disease and cerebrovascular disease. They were greeted with laughter. A couple of years ago, the Harvard School of Public Health published a huge study on vitamin E and showed that just 100 units of vitamin E per day decreased the death rate by 40 percent. Suppose they had done that in 1960? How many Americans would have been saved in the intervening 35 years had Harvard taken a responsible position and said, "We are skeptical of these claims but let's look at them"? But they wouldn't do thatit didn't fit their paradigm. So vitamin E was totally destroyed by the establishment. Think of the cost of those decisions. "
