Coastline The push for a better life for the Inuit in Canada began in 1972. The Canadian prim minister, Pierre Trudeau, published a paper calling for equal rights for minorities in Canada, including the Inuit. In the 1970's the Inuit and the Canadian government began working toward creating a separate territory run by Inuit. After many years, special elections were held in 1992, leading to the official creation of Nunavut seven years later. Nunavut is a vast territory in northeastern Canada with mostly Inuit inhabitants. Its name means "Our Land" in the Inuit language. Covering an area of about 733,600 square miles (1,900,000 square kilometers), Nunavut borders the Canadian province of Manitoba to the south and the Northwest Territories to the northwest and west. The Arctic Ocean lies to the north, Greenland to the northeast, and the Atlantic Ocean and Quebec to the east. About 27,500 people live in Nunavut. Of this number, more than 20,000 are Inuit. The capital, Iqaluit, is the largest community in the eastern Canadian Arctic.

Canada is a vast country - the second largest country in the world after Russia. Canada encompasses territory from the Atlantic to the Pacific, and from the high Arctic to the northern border of the continental U.S.A. Although very much a "northern" country the terrain and geography of Canada is very diverse. As well as the popular image of Canada as a country of pristine forests and snowy vistas, there are also deserts and badlands, temperate rain forests and long and wide beaches. ( continue... The topography in the area consists of gently rolling, treeless hills, and there are a wide variety of things to do for both visitors and residents. There are several ancient Thule ruins nearby, and Qaummaarviit Territorial Park, just offshore, offers great hiking and photography opportunities as well. In the city, high-quality regional arts and crafts are available in several shops. The first Europeans ( qallunaat to the Inuit) into Frobisher Bay were the crew of Martin Frobisher's ship Gabriel , in August 1576. The bay was a disappointment, though, as they were seeking the Northwest Passage, the mythical northern shortcut to Asia. No Europeans settled in the bay until 1914, when a trading post was established to tap the riches of Baffin Island. It was World War II that eventually brought modern development to the bay. In 1941, a weather station, code-named Crystal II, was built by the US Air Force to assist in trans-Atlantic flight planning. A large air base was built by the United States the following summer, to refuel aircraft headed for Europe - after the war, Canada purchased it for $6.8 million. Frobisher Bay was an important location all through the Cold War as well, from the construction of the first radar station in 1953, to the official closure of the Canadian Air Command detachment on December 1, 1983. In 1987, its strategic importance was again recognized when it was designated as one of five Forward Operating Locations for the new CF-18 fighter jets.

Canada and World Connections: Grade 4 - The Provinces and Territories of Canada
Overview In studying the provinces and territories of Canada, students in Grade 4 identify, locate, and label the major physical regions within the provinces and territories, and investigate the exchange of goods and resources among them. They compare the physical environments of regions and examine specific examples of cause-and-effect relationships. They also examine the structure and function of provincial government. Overall Expectations (O.E. column below)
  • describe the distinguishing physical features of regions within the provinces and territories; identify how different regions are interdependent (e.g., with respect to their economics or governments); demonstrate an awareness of the various relationships (e.g., economic, cultural) within and between Canadian regions.

Northwest Territories Two distinct geographics regions make up the Northwest Territories. First, there is the boreal forest. Boreal is a term relating to a forest in the northern North Temperate Zone that is mostly coniferous trees such as pine, spruce and fir. Referred to as taiga, it is the more southern "treed" portion of the area. The second area, known as the tundra is obvious from the stunted vegetation and rocks. The cold climate does not allow for a long growing season and although plants may be many years old, they are significantly smaller than their southern relatives.

I referred earlier to the geography of Nunavut. It is one of the four great regions, principally Inuit, which will be the second to gain recognition. Inuvialuit has already been recognized in the part that is completely in the west of Canada. This one will be located right in the middle, and will encompass a large part, one-fifth in fact, of continental Canada. The other part, Nunavik, occupies the entire northern part of Quebec. I would just like remind the House that the Government of Quebec is also opening up and intensifying negotiations concerning Nunavik and the Inuit who live there. I think, in fact I am convinced, that this will be the third region to be recognized, in terms of self-government land claims in Quebec, since the last region that involves the Inuit is in Labrador. Negotiations there are dragging out. They are making little progress, while things with Nunavut are reaching a conclusion. The western side, Inuvialuit, is already done. Soon, I hope, the same will be the case for Nunavik in northern Quebec, and the last one will probably be the people of Labrador. Nunavut is located in the middle and the east of the Northwest Territories. The bill before us will divide up the Northwest Territories. The lines are already pretty well drawn. There will be one legislative assembly, the one already in place in Yellowknife, NWT, and then another for the other part, the old eastern part of the Northwest Territories, with Iqualuit as its capital, as I have said.

His selection at the March 5, 2004 leadership forum in the Nunavut Legislature is the first time that a sitting Premier has received a second term in the non-partisan consensus government system that is in place in Nunavut and the Northwest Territories. Mr. Okalik was first elected to the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut on March 5, 1999 and was subsequently voted in by his caucus colleagues to become the first Premier of Nunavut. Mr. Okalik holds the portfolios of Justice, Aboriginal Affairs and Executive and Intergovernmental Affairs. His responsibilities as Premier have a tremendous impact on Nunavummiut and the growth of Nunavut.

My research is focussed on developing long records of hydroclimatic variability through the use of lake sediments and other records that provide high temporal resolution. Field research is directed at linking the weather and stream processes with sediment delivery and deposition in lakes in order to interpret and calibrate the long sedimentary record. Laboratory research is carried out to identify the characteristics of the sedimentary structures through the use of detailed sedimentology, geochemistry and related measurements. Work is currently being carried out in the Canadian High Arctic Islands , as well as adjacent to the Arctic and northern Pacific coasts to assess the relationship between hydrometeorological events and decadal-scale climate variations.
