The exhibit went on display in September at the gallery inside the Canadian embassy in Tokyo. Pelly, along with Gwen Ohokak, a member of the Kitikmeot Heritage Society, were on hand to talk to visitors about the art and answer questions about Nunavut. "The response to the exhibit in Japan has been very enthusiastic," Pelly said in an interview from his home in Cambridge Bay. "The Arctic is the hook, of course."

For the first time since the entry of Newfoundland into Confederation fifty years ago, the internal boundaries of Canada have changed. Carved entirely out of the Northwest Territories, Nunavut covers 2 million square kilometres, or approximately one-fifth of Canada’s surface. Although the Northwest Territories has been reduced several times in the course of Canadian history, this most recent boundary change is unique in that it is the result of an initiative by the Aboriginal inhabitants of the Territory. Good Student) At Sakku School, most of our classes are in Language Arts, Social Studies, Math, Computer literacy, Science and Art. However, we do not neglect our culture. We have classes in our first language, Inuktitut, and in the traditional ways of our ancestors. Our Cultural Inclusion program starts in October and goes until March. Below are some of the things we learn. In this Picture, Mona and Susie are showing Malaiyah, Linda, Sally and Nicky how to sew. They start off with cloth, but later, learn how to sew caribou hide into mittens, boots and clothing. Malaiyah, Noel, Johnny and Davidee are very interested in learning how to prepare a freshly killed caribou. Armond is showing them how it is done. Caribou are very plentiful near Coral Harbour and this resource is a common meal in most homes. Kindergarten students really enjoy working with wood. Here Cameron shows Willie Jr., Sandy Jr., Clifford Jr. and Joe Jr. how to make a model of the sleds they see all over town. In the real thing, during the long Arctic winter, they travel for days over the land hunting caribou, and on Hudson Bay hunting seals and other game. Yes, we have internet, cable and satellite TV and lots so modern things in Coral Harbour. However, the traditional skills of our ancestors are just as important. Our school is making sure we never forget them.

Nunavut, Canada The name, Nunavut, pronounced “Noo-na-voot” is an Inuktitut (Inuit ) word meaning “our land.” Canada’s newest territory was officially created on April 1, 1999. Nunavut covers around two million square kilometres, or about one fifth the size of Canada. Its boundaries begin at Hudson Bay and border the North West Territories and include many of the isolated islands in the Beau-fort sea and those opposite Greenland. Nunavut also has four time zones, but the people hope to change it one day to a single zone. According to the most recent census, the population is close to 25,000, of which most are Inuit. The remaining cultures include North American Indian, Metis and other aboriginal peoples. The capital of Nunavut is Iqaluit, located just west of the Labrador Sea. About one sixth of the entire population lives in or near the capital. bodyOffer(3879) Nunavut was created to bring the government and administration of daily affairs closer to the people. This is important because culturally and economically this region of Canada is very different from the rest of the country. The main source of income is hunting and trapping. Teenagers comprise 38% of Nunavut’s population. Officials are now working to develop a new generation of better educated Inuit. Historically students missed a lot of school because the Inuit culture places less emphasis on learning and more on traditional values and experiences. For an Inuit, becoming one with the land and learning to hunt, fish and trap is far more worthwhile than sitting in a classroom.

The Northwest Territories has been halved and the Inuit of the Eastern Arctic now have their own territory  Nunavut. I worked as Economic Development Officer for the Government of the NWT for ten years and still work 4-5 months a year in Nunavut. I will be traveling to schools in your area in 2003/2004, and am available to deliver this visual and informative presentation about the Inuit and Nunavut Territory to interested schools/classes. Presentation includes the following: 40-45 minute presentation about Nunavut and the Arctic, followed by a 15-20 minute question and answer session. (total presentation is 50-70 min) a display of beautiful Inuit arts and crafts, soapstone carvings and traditional items. The presentation is entertaining and informative, with some beautiful arctic slides, and a fascinating display of Inuit arts and crafts items, and is suitable for Grades 1–12. I have found that a maximum of 3-4 classes (75-100 students) works best and allows more interaction by the students. I have delivered in excess of 500 presentations to schools in Western Canada, and all classes have found it highly informative and relevant to the curriculum.

I also served on the local Education Committee, the Hamlet Council, various community Boards and agencies, and recently ran a close but unsuccessful race for MLA in the first ever Nunavut Territorial election.
