Moving in Canada Nunavut Overview
Location
In 1999 the new territory of Nunavut, which means "our land" in Inuktitut, the Inuit language. Nunavut is a vast territory - larger than Newfoundland, Prince Edward Island, Nova Scotia, New Brunswick and Quebec combined-that contains one fifth of Canada's land (2,254,402 sq km). This is the first major change to the map of Canada since Newfoundland joined Canada 50 years ago, in 1949.
History
See territorial map
People
Inuit, as the majority population of Nunavut, are shaping the territorial government in keeping with their culture, traditions and aspirations. Inuktitut is a working language of the government, though government services are also available in English and French. The government intends to incorporate the best of traditional Inuit and contemporary government systems. The Government of Nunavut is elected by all residents of the territory regardless of their origin.
About 56 percent of Nunavut's residents are under the age of 25, and all residents must cope with a cost of living two to three times higher than that of southern Canadians.
Nunavut Economy
The economy relies heavily on resource industries subject to wide fluctuations in world markets. Mining is by far the largest private sector industry, with major mines for ore including gold, uranium and recently diamonds. Development, while necessary for economic prosperity, is being carefully managed so as not to threaten the fragile Arctic ecosystem and the traditional lifestyles of the northern peoples.

A Guide to Iqaluit, Nunavut
The topography in the area consists of gently rolling, treeless hills, and there are a wide variety of things to do for both visitors and residents. There are several ancient Thule ruins nearby, and Qaummaarviit Territorial Park, just offshore, offers great hiking and photography opportunities as well. In the city, high-quality regional arts and crafts are available in several shops. The first Europeans ( qallunaat to the Inuit) into Frobisher Bay were the crew of Martin Frobisher's ship Gabriel , in August 1576. The bay was a disappointment, though, as they were seeking the Northwest Passage, the mythical northern shortcut to Asia. No Europeans settled in the bay until 1914, when a trading post was established to tap the riches of Baffin Island. It was World War II that eventually brought modern development to the bay. In 1941, a weather station, code-named Crystal II, was built by the US Air Force to assist in trans-Atlantic flight planning. A large air base was built by the United States the following summer, to refuel aircraft headed for Europe - after the war, Canada purchased it for $6.8 million. Frobisher Bay was an important location all through the Cold War as well, from the construction of the first radar station in 1953, to the official closure of the Canadian Air Command detachment on December 1, 1983. In 1987, its strategic importance was again recognized when it was designated as one of five Forward Operating Locations for the new CF-18 fighter jets.

Nunavut's 26 communities are spread across nearly two million square kilometers almost one fifth of Canada. Its population is about 28,000, 85% of whom are Inuit. Arctic Bay Arctic Bay is also known as Ikpiarjuk, 'the pocket', because of the hills that surround it. The community is connected to the mining town of Nanisivik by a 21 kilometre road. Arviat Arviat can be found on old maps as Eskimo Point. The name Arviat comes from arviq, Inuktitut for 'bowhead whale'. The community was named for a nearby island that is shaped like a bowhead. The Hudson Bay Company established a trading post at Arviat in the 1920s and a Catholic mission followed shortly thereafter. The area had previously been used by the Pallirmiut Inuit to hunt for seals, walrus and whales. Baker Lake Baker Lake is also known as Qamani'tuaq, 'big lake joined by a river at both ends'. The two rivers joining Baker Lake are designated Canadian heritage rivers, the Kazan and Thelon Rivers. Baker Lake, the only non-coastal Inuit settlement in Nunavut, has long been known for its fine arts. During the 1950s, artists from Baker Lake pioneered the art of printmaking in the North, achieving global recognition for their skill.
