Inhabited by the proud and stalwart Inuit, Baffin Island is also home to the full range of arctic wildlife; caribou, seals, walrus and polar bears roam freely, and roughly 12% of the North American bird population breeds on Baffin. Renowned for its artists, the vibrant culture of the Baffin Inuit has produced some of the finest artists and sculptors in the North. Open canoeing on Baffin Island was virtually unheard of - until our first descent of the upper Soper River in July 1990. The Soper River Valley, on the Meta Incognita Peninsula, along the southern end of the island, directly across the Hudson Straight from the Ungava Peninsula, is considered one of the most beautiful pieces of terrain in the eastern arctic. Oasis of Baffin Island Class I-II+ rapids - ideal for novices.

RELATED STORIES, SITES IQALUIT, Northwest Territories (CNN) Voters in the eastern Arctic on Monday chose the first government of Nunavut, a new territory to be created out of the Northwest Territories on April 1. Across a frigid region bigger than Alaska, residents in some of Canada's most remote villages voted. People gathered throughout Nunavut to watch the election results come in as the polls closed at 8 p.m. in each of the vast new territory's three time zones. About 80 percent of Nunavut's 25,000 people are Inuit, and the new government is expected to be the first in Canada except for tribal councils controlled by an indigenous people. A total of 71 candidates competed for 19 seats in the legislature of Nunavut.

Aboriginal Canadians - From the Gift of the Iroquois to the Creation of Nunavut On April 1, 1999 the territory of Nunavut came into existence, the first change to Canada's map since Newfoundland joined Confederation in 1949. Martin O'Malley of CBC News Online flew to Iqaluit to examine the people and the place before the big day. The new territory is about 2 million square kilometres, twice the size of Ontario, and spans three time zones. The population is 25,000, of whom 85 per cent are Inuit. The newly elected Legislature has 19 seats and decisions are reached by consensus. There are no political parties. The new premier is Paul Okalik, a lawyer elected by his peers as Nunavut became a new territory.

    Land Claim Overview
The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement, ratified by the Inuit in November of 1992, signed by the Prime Minister of Canada on May 25, 1993, and passed through the Canadian Parliament in June of the same year, is the largest native land claim settlement in Canadian history. Click here to view or download an Adobe Acrobat (.pdf) version of the Nunavut Land Claims Agreement. In providing title to the Nunavut Inuit of 350,000 square kilometres of land in the eastern Arctic, the agreement establishes clear rules of ownership and control over land and resources in the new Territory (which has an area of approximately two million square kilometers, or one-fifth of Canada's landmass). The future for these elementary school children in Iqaluit, and children throughout Nunavut, looks much brighter following the settlement of the Nunavut Land Claim.

The Creation of Nunavut... "Nunavut means "our Land" to me because we will own the Land, we will have to take care of it and watch over it. We will have a flag of our own. We will need more education to have good jobs. We will have more responsibilities. This will be our Inuit land so we will have to speak more Inuktitut. If there will be more Inuktitut classes we will need more Inuktitut teachers." -Jonah Angutiqkuaq, grade 8 "I think Nunavut makes us Inuks proud to have our own territory. " -Angela Idlout, grade 9 "Nunavut means a lot to me. It is our future home. It means that we will have more independence. More things to do. More opportunity. There will be more Inuktitut to learn, so we can get good jobs, so that will mean that you’d have to stay in school to have a good education if you want to have a good job to have a good career. We will have more responsibilities. There will be more things to take care of, more things to do. We will have to control Nunavut. If we don’t, a lot of things can go wrong. We’d have to take care of a lot of things like electricity, power, and all sorts of things. If you do something wrong, you will have to be responsible for it." -Naomie Pudluk, grade 8
