DESTINATIONS Paddling Nunavut's Coppermine River History By Bill Layman Lynda and I were drawn to the Coppermine River by the written accounts of early explorers like Samuel Hearne of the Hudson's Bay Company and Sir John Franklin of the British Navy. Hearne's famous overland 1771 journey to Bloody Falls with the Chipewyan leader Matonabbee, and Franklin's somewhat naove and ill-fated 1821 journey down the Coppermine's length with Hood, Back, Richardson, and Hepburn, guided by the Yellowknife chief Akaitcho, fascinated us. Bill Layman paddling easy Following Franklin's journey, the preferred route from Coronation Gulf to the arctic coast became through Dease Arm on Great Bear Lake and then down the Dease River to the lower reaches of the Coppermine; in fact, this is the route that Franklin had initially planned to follow. Fort Franklin (or Bear Lake Post as it was known in the early 1800s) located at the extreme western end of Great Bear Lake, and later Fort Confidence established in 1837 at the head of the Dease River on the extreme eastern end of the lake, became logical way points for northern travelers.

Tourism It was at Cape Dorset that the remains of an ancient Inuit people, who flourished between 1000 B.C. and 1100 A.D., were found. They were called the "Dorset Culture" afer Cape Dorset. The Baffin Inuit of Cape Dorset are descendents of the later "Thule Culture" knowns by their legends as the "Tunlit". The cape itself was named by Captain Luke Fox on September 24, 1631, after Edward Sackville, Earl of Dorset. Sackville, a Lord of the Admiralty, was one of Fox's sponsors in his unsuccessful attempt to find the Northwest Passage. The "cape" on Dorset Island is actually a 243 meter [798 feet] high mountain, part of the Kinngait Range. Kinngait means "high mountain" in Inuktitut, hence the name of the community. The Hudson's Bay company established a trading post in 1913. A Roman Catholic mission was established in 1938 but closed in 1960 as the majority of the residents are of the Anglican faith.

History of the Come warm yourself by our fire. Let us spin some tales of old, let us read to you a bit from the journals of the early explorers, and share with you the sagas about their often strange fates and incredible discoveries. All of our Great Canadian Ecoventures wildlife and adventure field programs offer detailed interpretations of local Arctic history and archaeology. This is not only intriguing in its own right, but often directly applies to our modern day endeavors to locate wildlife: The attempt to try to understand the logic behind the occupational evidence of the natives whose survival depended on their unique ability to locate and make correct decisions to effectively hunt wild animals for food and shelter. Those very same types of animals that - a millennium later - we now attempt to approach and photograph for our pleasures. So, in the flickering firelight and the quiet of the Arctic evening, come join us - warm yourself by our fire - and let us share with you a little of what we have learned about the special relationship between the people and wildlife of this remote and magical land...

Canada Welcomes Nunavut to the Confederation

Canadian place names like Dawson, Fort McPherson, Fort Smith, Inuvik, Iqaluit, Yellowknife, Radium Hotsprings, and Tuktoyaktuk conjure up images of Jack London, and igloos, solitary seal hunters, and intrepid mounties , frigid winters, and desolate vast areas of endless white. The juxtaposition of native and anglo-european names also serve as a reminder of the diversity of the hardy resourceful peoples who call the Canadian North their home. On April 1, 1999 school children in Canada (but alas probably not in the United States) will have a new territory and a new capital to memorize. Nunavut (Inuktitut for "Our Land") is being be created out of the eastern part of the Northwest Territories. This date, we are told, was not chosen for any significant or sinister reason other than it was the start of a new fiscal year. April foolishness notwithstanding, at Midnight on April 1st , the eastern section of the Northwest Territories comprising 1,900,000 km2 extending north from Manitoba-Hudson's Bay-Quebec past the magnetic north pole to the very tip of the Canadian Arctic on Ellesmere Island will become a separate self governing territory in the Canadian Confederation.

In a report to be released Tuesday, Nunavut Tunngavik Inc. calls for tougher protection for Inuit language and culture and criticizes both the territory and Ottawa for allowing social problems to reach a "crisis." "(Nunavut) was supposed to be put in as an Inuit-sensitive government," Tunngavik president Paul Kaludjak said Monday. "It did not really come out that way.

During the Cold War that followed, several east-west lines of radar stations were built for a Distant Early Warning system, and military manoeuvres were held. In 1950, a new patrol ship, the CD Howe, was launched, expanding the range of annual patrols, and dispensing medical and administrative services in the eastern Arctic. Tuberculosis patients were brought south, often for long periods; the children forgot their language and had a hard time returning to northern life. Meanwhile, the Canadian Broadcasting Corporation initiated Inuktitut broadcasts during the 1950s, and later assisted in the creation of Inuit radio networks.

    THE EARLY YEARS
There was once a world before this, and in it lived people who were not of our tribe. But the pillars of the earth collapsed, and all were destroyed. And the world was emptiness. Then two men grew up from a hummock of earth. They were born and fully grown all at once. And they wished to have children. A magic song changed one of them into a woman, and they had children. These were our earliest forefathers, and from them all the lands were peopled.

In the 1850s, Europeans and Americans began to appreciate the commercial value of the Arctic's animal resources. The North Atlantic commercial whaling industry, operating out of Britain and New England, began large-scale operations in what are now Canadian waters, where they killed thousands of whales. They hired hundreds of Inuit to work on their ships as hunters and seamstresses. A huge range and quantity of manufactured goods entered Inuit society, everything from rifles and tent canvas to whale boats and flour. At the same time, the Pacific whalers, based in San Francisco, were expanding north through Bering Strait and then east along the Alaskan coast to the Mackenzie River. By 1890, they were well established at Herschel Island. Because of the much longer distances involved, the Pacific whalers routinely stayed over for the winter. The crews of up to 15 ships in a season became involved in local Inuit life.

Coral Harbour, Nunavut, Canada A History Lesson We are an Inuit Community of almost 800 living on the shores of Hudson Bay in Northern Canada. The first development was the Hudson Bay Company post built in 1924. The area later became the home of a United States Air Force Base during World War 2. At the time, the Inuit were a nomadic people, following the caribou, seals, whales, and hunting numerous other animals that provided the food and tools we needed to survive in this harsh land. In the 1950's, the Canadian government encouraged our People to settle in Coral by providing a school, a health clinic other government services. Today, we are a modern community, taking advantage of the technology and opportunities available to us as Canadians, while at the same time, working to preserve our Inuit Culture, traditions and language. Coral Harbour, or Salliq in Inuktitut, is part of Canada's newest territory, Nunavut . In 1999, what was the Northwest Territory was divided to reflect the Indian cultures of the Western Arctic and the Inuit cultures of the eastern Arctic. By far, Canada's largest political region, Nunavut has the smallest population, due in part to the isolation and very demanding climate. The Territory is self governing, the capital City being Iqaluit on Baffin Island.
