January 8th, 2002 Canada's north is a harsh landscape, often frigid and barren. However, one finds patches of life in this inhospitable place: a small flower, blades of grass, the splash of a seal, the cry of a bird. Each is a testament of life's ability to sustain itself and even flourish in the severest conditions. The story of Canada's Inuit people reflects this northern landscape. It is a tale of harsh conditions, of striving to live in one of the toughest climates in the world, and of undergoing massive social, economic and cultural changes. But it's also a tale about a desire to sustain a way of life while adapting to a changing world. The Nunavut territory is a new chapter in the Inuit story. It marks the end of years of Inuit struggle for recognition of their unique existence and the power to protect it. It also marks the beginning of a new struggle to overcome the social and economic problems facing the Inuit in the 21st century.

A remote community of 1200 people off the northwest coast of Baffin Island, Igloolik has a rich, experimental 20-year history of using contemporary media art to serve community cultural needs.
The Inukshuk Project of the late 1970's led to Paul Apak's one-man IBC studio in Igloolik in 1983, joined by Zacharias Kunuk in 1984. In the late 1980's, dissatisfied with IBC's government-contolled Ottawa-based non-Inuit management, Apak, Kunuk, Pauloosie Qulitalik and Norman Cohn created Igloolik Isuma Productions , Canada's first Inuit independent production company. Isuma led to Tarriaksuk Video Centre and the Women's Video Workshop ( Arnait Video Productions ) in 1991; the 13 half-hour fictional TV series, Nunavut (Our Land), was featured at INPUT '95 in Spain; the website created in 1997, and Inuusiq (Life) youth video productions in 1998. The Nunavut Land Claims Agreement was ratified by the Inuit of Nunavut in November of 1992. It was signed by the Prime Minister of Canada on May 25, 1993 in Iqaluit, and passed through the Canadian Parliament in June of the same year. It is the largest aboriginal land claim settlement in Canadian history. In providing title to the Nunavut Inuit of 350,000 square-kilometers of land in the eastern Arctic, the agreement establishes clear rules of ownership and control over land and resources in the new Territory of Nunavut, which has an area of land one-fifth the size of Canada.

The area was first inhabited by the First Nations people who hunted and fished here for thousands of years. In the late 1500's and early 1600's Jaques Cartier arrived from France which marked the beginning of settlements in Canada. French settlers who became known as Acadians were the first Europeans to settle permanently in Canada. Over time they were joined by settlers from the British Isles and Germany. In the 1700's British refugees from the American War of Independence that were still loyal to the crown (called Loyalists) came to this area from the United States. Welcome to Nunavut
In the Inuit language of Inuktitut, Nunavut means "Our Land". It is the name given to the ancestral home of the Inuit of the central and eastern Arctic, and to the new Territory of Nunavut in Canada's eastern Arctic. Though the creation of the Territory of Nunavut on April 1, 1999 represents a new chapter in the story of Canada's confederation, the story of Nunavut and the Inuit who make their lives there is an ancient one, going back over thousands of years of continuous habitation. The creation of the Territory of Nunavut and the finalization of the historic land claim settlement between the Nunavut Inuit and the Government of Canada adds a new dimension to the evolving history of both Nunavut and Canada.
