Social Studies Syllabus
May 10 - 14, 2004
You may access this syllabus online at www.op97.org/~jalexander
Hello parents. Please note the following:
**We will follow our block schedule this week.
**There will be a test on Wednesday. Students should use their cause and effect questions as a study guide.
**There will be no morning help session this week, on Thursday. Instead I will have a Social Studies test review session with my students on Tuesday, during lunch.
**Previously, my students mentioned they were going to mummify a chicken, fish, etc. Do you have any questions or concerns? If so, email me at jalexander@op97.org. I understand it takes about one month to finish the mummification process. Please ask your sixth grader to inform me when the process is close to completion. I would like to have your child explain the process to the class.
**We will be concluding our Egypt study this week and moving on to study other African nations of Nubia, Mali, and Ghana. Therefore, I am offering one last extension assignment: A hieroglyphic puzzle - it is entirely in hieroglyphs.
Monday, May 10: Periods 1 and 2 only-

Geography Isabella Bird Bishop
British world traveler Isabella Bird Bishop circled the globe three times during her extensive travels, beginning in 1872. In 1892 she became the first woman elected to the Royal Geographic Society. This European map of the world from 1649 shows a major misconception Europeans held about world geography. The map includes Terra Australis, a vast southern continent connected to the southern tip of South America and occupying most of the South Pacific Ocean. European theorists believed that a huge body of land had to exist in the southern hemisphere in order to balance the large continents found in the northern hemisphere. Expeditions in the 18th century, notably those of English explorer Captain James Cook, would prove that Terra Australis does not exist. William Blaeu/PNI Geography The science of place, i.e., the study of the surface of the earth, the location and distribution of its physical and cultural features, the aerial patterns or places that they form, and the interrelation of these features as they affect humans.

Here are some ideas to help you out. If you really are stuck, answer the questions at the bottom of the page on theAck- I'm-really-stuck form, and turn that in with your unfinished homework. 1. Write the times of the night you will spend on your homework in each box on the planner. Then make sure you stick to it. For example, if you said you would study math from 5:00 - 5:30, then do just that. If you don't finish on time, move on to your other subjects, and come back to math at the end if you have time later. If you can't, fill out the Ack! form, and turn that in with your math homework. 2. Use your notes from class to help you out. Chances are, what you did in class that day had a lot to do with your homework assignment.

Our next unit of study in Mrs. Applegate's class is "Our Changing Earth." Please look through the assigned packet and sign where parent signature is required if you haven't already done so. This research paper and project is due May 27; please be aware of the time frame to avoid the 10 point deduction for every day that it is late. Your involvement in this project will help reduce a last minute scramble to get it completed. Please continue to sign and review the agenda books nightly; our goal is to have a strong finish at the end of 4th quarter. Thanks for your support throughout the year and have a great summer!
Students in Math will be continuing their study of measurement in geometry. We will learn about angles, angle measurement, perimeters and areas of different polygons, and even touch on the famous Pythagorean Theorem. As we end this year, I want to remind students to always hand in their homework and make sure they come to class prepared with a pencil and their notebook. Have a safe and happy summer vacation!

    AUSAR (OSIRUS)
Ausar is one of the most important figures in the history of world civilization. According to ancient knowledge, Ausar (Osirus) contributed to the creation of Khemitic (Egyptian) civilization through a series of new programs that began long before the Great Flood. The prehistoric civilization of Ta-Seti was more advanced than Egypt and existed before Egyptian civilization by three thousand years (TIME MAGAZINE, 1999).
Ausar also travelled to the East and established settlements in India including a City called Nysa after the Nysa of Egypt (read "African Presence in Early Asia," edt. by Runoko Rashidi and Ivan Van Sertima, Transaction Publications. Also read "Susu Economics," pub. by 1stbooks Library, www.1stbooks.com
Ausar is credited for the inventiontion and improvement of forms of arts, sciences, literature, culture and many other arts and sciences.
    KHEKPERE SENUSRET (CECROPS)
Khekpere Senusret known as "Cecrops" by the Greeks is said to have founded the City of Athens and contributed to the creation of Greek civilization before the Greek tribes migrated from Central Europe among a number of Europeans who migrated Southerward between 1700 B.C. and afterwards.
Senusret was also a warrior who established a colony on the Black Sea and maintained thousands of African troops from Egypt in the region. The Greek writer Herodotus describes these Africans as Colchians and compares them to the original Negro Egyptian people.
