Alexandrian Scholarship

"When Alexander founded Alexandria at an Egyptian harbor on the Mediterranean in 331 B.C.[Arrian, Anabasis 3.1.1], he laid the foundations not just for a new city, but for a place destined to be the locus of Greek intellectuals in the post-classical period...". Ellen Brundige

We've argued in our Accessibility guide (which complements the separate online Design guide ) that irrespective of legislative requirements, accessibility is good business practice. Whether you're a commercial entity, a nonprofit organisation or an individual, you want people to be able to use your site. Adherence to basic rules about usability is common sense ... although common sense seems to be in short supply. Sloan's paper discusses the UK Disability Discrimination Act 1999

HISTORY OF THE PATRIARCHS OF ALEXANDRIA: ANCIENT PREFACES
FlRST PREFACE: In the Name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, the One God. This is the book of the lives of the Fathers and Patriarchs. May God grant us the blessing of their prayers! These patriarchs were the successors of the father and missionary, Saint Mark the evangelist, who preached the holy gospel and the good news of the Lord Christ in the great city of Alexandria, and in the region of Egypt, and in the regions of Ethiopia and Nubia, and in Pentapolis in the West, which is also called Africa, and in the neighbouring territories; for all these countries fell by lot to his preaching, through the inspiration of the Holy Ghost. And after he had preached and proclaimed the good tidings, and written the gospel in Greek, and finished his course, he became a martyr in the Caesarium, a quarter of Alexandria, which is called in the Hebrew language the city of Ammon [Jer. 46:25, Nahum 3:8]. His biography, which records that which was done to him, and how he preached, and what befell him, is set forth in the first of the histories contained in this book. And after him our orthodox fathers, the patriarchs, were the heirs of his doctrines which save souls from hell; and they remained true to that which he delivered to them, in the guardianship of the orthodox faith and in attachment to it, and in patience under persecution for its sake, at all times, to their last breath, that is to say till death. They sat upon his episcopal throne, one after another, each of them succeeding his predecessor; and thus all were his representatives, and the shepherds of his flock, and his imitators in his Faith in Christ.

Egypt's Rival in Africa
The University of Pennsylvania's (UPM) Egyptian collection contains one of the United States' largest collections of material from ancient Nubia, particularly the region of Lower Nubia, which lies immediately south of Egypt in what today is modern Sudan. Several early UPM expeditions excavated a number of Nubian sites in Lower Nubia. A civilization at least as old as that of Egypt to the north, Nubia has its own distinctive series of cultures lasting more than 3000 years, but the northern part of Nubia was always in close interaction with Egypt, and its art and religion were at times influenced by Egypt. The statue of the scribe Amenemhat (left) shows a man who looks very Egyptian. He wears the short kilt and shoulder length wig typical of an Egyptian courtier; however, Amenemhat was a native Nubian who served as a scribe under Queen Hatshepsut (1479-1458 B.C.). Images such as this show close interaction between Nubia and Egypt during the New Kingdom, a period in which much of Nubia was ruled by Egypt. This statue was found in the temple of

RECOMMENDED READING ON THE ANCIENT NEAR EAST
A Guide to Introductory Readings on the Ancient Near Eastern World
A Collaborative Production of The Research Archives of the Oriental Institute The Oriental Institute Museum The Oriental Institute Museum Education Program Recommended Reading is a guide to introductory readings on the peoples and cultures of the ancient Near East. Some of the material included here ( Ancient Mesopotamia ) was originally published as the Resource Guide included with one of the three volumes ( Life in Ancient Egypt, Life in Ancient Nubia, Life in Ancient Mesopotamia ) of the Guides for Teachers Based on the Collections and Resources of the Oriental Institute Museum, University of Chicago (Chicago, 1996), produced by the Museum Education Program with the generous support of a grant from the Polk Bros. Foundation. We have made some additions and corrections, and slightly altered the structure of that Resources Guide for the purposes of providing this information on-line, and we expect to add additional material as needed. The Egyptian and Nubian lists have been developed by Emily Teeter in the course of many years of teaching and lecturing and will change as new material is published. In addition, we are planning to add more lists as we identify topics of interest to the public. We welcome your suggestions. This on-line version was coordinated and processed into HTML by Charles E. NUBIA
THE LAND AND ITS PEOPLE
Nubia is located in today's southern Egypt and northern Sudan. This land has one of the harshest climates in the world. The temperatures are high throughout most of the year, and rainfall is infrequent. The banks of the Nile are narrow in much of Nubia, making farming difficult. Yet, in antiquity, Nubia was a land of great natural wealth, of gold mines, ebony, ivory and incense which was always prized by her neighbors. Nubia is the homeland of Africa's earliest black culture with a history which can be traced from 3100 B.C. onward through Nubian monuments and artifacts, as well as written records from Egypt and Rome. 1992 Exhibition Brochure - VANISHED KINGDOMS OF THE NILE: The Rediscovery of Ancient Nubia
INTRODUCTION
After the death of Professor Seele in 1971, the Institute initiated a project to complete the publication of the results of the Egyptian Nubia excavations. The publication project was entrusted to Bruce Williams, Ph.D., a graduate of the University of Chicago in Egyptology. The first two volumes were published before Williams was assigned to the project. Since then Williams has completed eight monumental monographs (1986-93) that will stand as the fundamental sources for the archaeology and history of Egyptian Nubia. Williams is currently working on two additional volumes. Another two volumes are also in preparation by collaborators, including one Ph.D. dissertation. Williams has devoted his entire academic career to the Nubia publications. His dedication is admirable and the Institute takes pride in the fact that the Nubia publication project is near completion. Because the Nubian expedition was a part of the UNESCO salvage project, the Egyptian Government granted export license for a large collection of objects recovered by the expedition. These artifacts are now a part of the perminent collection of the Institute and will serve as a valuable resource for generations of scholars as new questions are raised and new techniques of analysis are introduced. Two museum exhibitions of Nubian materials from the collection have been mounted; one of magnificent textiles at the Art Institute, and a fine educational exhibition in the Oriental Institute Museum. The exhibit in our museum, Vanished Kingdoms of the Nile: The Recovery of Ancient Nubia, attracted many enthuiastic new visitors to the museum and received a "Superior Achievement" award from the Congress of Illinois Historical Societies and Museums in 1992, as well as considerable press coverage, including a favorable review in the New York Times.

PREVIEW NUBIA MUSEUM - ASWAN In November 1997, the long-awaited Nubia Museum opened in Aswan. It has been worth the wait as it displays thousands of antiquities that would have been lost under the waters of Lake Nasser had not a major international effort salavaged them during the 1960s and '70s. Also among the highlights are scenes of Nubian life demonstrated with a range of life-size displays. Here are a few images to hold you over until I add the pages proper. More text below.
The museum also features exhibits highlighting aspects of Nubia influenced during the Graeco-Roman, Coptic and Islamic periods. The museum is built on a hill on the road heading south from Aswan before the turnoff to the Unfinished Obelisk. The facility sits amid gardens that feature antiquities, a waterway representing the River Nile, a cave fitted out with pre-historic wall carvings, and a Nubian house.
