The Growth of Ignorance?
The Post-Colonial Studies Reader , an impressive volume edited by Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin (1995a). As the volume illustrates, contemporary approaches of postcolonial scholars are manifold. To mention a few sources of inspiration besides the ones already mentioned, there are psychoanalytical theories inspired by Lacan, power approaches inspired by the writing of Foucault, and poststructural deconstruction in the vein of Derrida and Barthes. However, the above listed theoreticians are not my focus in the following discussion. But interestingly to note, the editors of The Post-Colonial Studies Reader are themselves highlighting some theoretical pitfalls when trying to capture the common feature of postcolonial theory. Thus, the editors promote "the binarisms of colonial discourse" as the conceptual tool for "post-colonial critics" in their re-writing of history (Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin 1995b:8). Further, they are describing the intellectual background of the very same criticism as follows: "The colonial space is therefore an agonistic space. Despite the ‘imitation’ and ‘mimicry’ with which colonised peoples cope with the imperial presence, the relationship becomes one of constant, if implicit, contestation and opposition." (Ashcroft, Griffiths and Tiffin 1995b:9). My aim is not to further define postcolonial theorisation, or postcolonial theory as such, a far too problematic categorisation, but to discuss some problems with concepts like imitation, mimicry, binary polarities and constant opposition.

'Putting the last first' Introduction In the absence of community organisations among refugees which are empowered to identify and look after those most in need, agencies have relied on conventional definitions of the vulnerable, that is, the physically handicapped, the elderly, widows, and orphans. Statistical studies, just like programmes designed for 'the masses', cannot identify all those individuals and classes of people who are in serious need of special assistance. The best that this survey can do is to present data which demonstrates to policy makers and refugee communities the extent and range of unmet needs. In addition, many case studies were collected.[ One of the underlying assumptions of refugee policy for Africa is that the basic unit of production is the normally constituted peasant family. (e.g. Land 1981.) At the same time, there is an appreciation among policy-makers that in the process of mass migration under conditions of extreme coercion, family structure has been adversely affected. The statement that the majority of refugees are women and children has become almost a cliche. Statistically this is true of nearly all populations, and the special significance of this fact for refugees is insufficiently understood. Given the emphasis on pushing refugees towards economic independence, it is essential to discover just how refugee communities re-constitute themselves and what economic strategies they are capable of employing to survive without relief aid. The essential disabilities suffered by refugees could be grouped under three categories:

Some questions should be asked:
What is Physics?
A branch of science that should be protected from extinction OR a branch of science that employs the exceptionally, mentally well-endowed people to seek an understanding of the world we live in?
I believe the latter. Care should be taken in "marketing" Physics so that the main philosophy that powers this branch of science is not lost. The perception of Physics, both within and outside academia, should reflect its rigorous, as well as its 'central' nature. The field of Physics should produce physicists and not job seekers. The establishment, by many institutions, of sub-departments (Applied Physics, Engineering Physics, etc.) have not shown much promise because the students that are a product of such are viewed as half-baked by industry, academia and other sectors.

Since 1955 the Khartoumers have subjected South Sudanese to forced acculturation . The special Arabic of Khartoum is now spoken in the few military garrisons in South Sudan . Note that the modern Khartoumers have two forms of Arabic , one is called classical Arabic and the other is called special Arabic . Classical Arabic is the Arabic of the Koran . Special Arabic is the Arabic used as lingua franca , that is , for business , trade , conversation , disputation , instruction , administration etc . The special Arabic is also used as medium of instruction in schools . A Nubi , however , can easily relate to the special Arabic of Khartoum spoken in the South Sudan by the Khartoum military , soldiers , merchants or jalaba and their associates . About 40 , 000 people in the garrison town of Juba , South Sudan , speak the special Arabic of Khartoum . The Khartoum soldiers or military personnel and jalaba population in the garrison town of Juba is about this number . The indigenous people of these garrison towns speak their mother tongues . Panel 1a The Funj Chronicle and the Turco-Egyptian Conquest, Professor P. Holt The paper will open with a survey of the five known writers who contributed to the final version of the Funj Chronicle. These were (1) Ahmad b. al-Hajj Abu (sic) 'Ali, known as Katib al-Shuna, the author of the original and basic version; (2) Ahmad al-Hajj Muhammad Janqal, the first continuator of the Chronicle; (3) al_Zubayr b. 'Abd al-Qadir w.al-Zayn, known as al-Zubayr w. Dawwah, the author of the Paris recension; (4) Ibrahim 'Abd al-Dafi', the author of the final recension; (5) al-Amin Muhamad al-Darir, the author of the concluding section. Their status in contemporary Sudanese society, and the effect of this on their historiography will be examined. Three sections will follow, dealing with different aspects of the Conquest as mirrored in the Chronicle. The first will deal with the widening vision of the writers in an immediate expansion first of the geographical awareness of Katib al-Shuna from the increasingly reduced confines of the Funj kingdom in its closing decades to the wider territories conquered in the campaigns of 1820-21. The theme is picked up by the other authors' accounts of the later border campaigns. The attempts of al-Zubayr w.Dawwah and Ibrahim 'Abd al-Dafi' to deepen the historical background will also be noticed. The second section will examine how the authors, especially Katib al-Shuna and Ahmad Muhammad Janqal, present the Conquest and the subsequent settlement of the conquered territories. It will assess their attitude to the events of the Turco-Egyptian invasion, and to the overall significance of the Conquest itself. Linked with this, the third section will attempt to evaluate the attitude of the conquered peoples towards their rulers, the military commanders and hukumdars, and more remotely the viceroys of Egypt and the Ottoman sultans.

This chapter is written primarily to clarify concepts such as 'ecology', 'evolution', and 'language', which are central to this book. It was still spoken by Muslim and Christian Egyptians for centuries following the Muslim conquest. Standard Arabic became the official language by an Ummayad caliph in the 8th century. Greek too became the offical language of Egypt when Alexander the Great conquered Egypt, though the vernacular and literary lanugage was Egyptian. When the Turks (Ottomans) invaded Egypt, Turkish became the official language as well. Ira, the Arabo-Muslim conquest was not the first or the last military invasion of Egypt; "the original indigenous Egyptians" had already lived through the Hyksos, Assyrian, Libyan, Nubian, Babylonian, Persian, Greek, Roman, and Byzantine invasions before Islam came to Egypt. These invasions, including the Arabo-Muslim one, were the work of small military expeditions whose impact was seen notably on the ruling (usually foreign) elite. Amr bin Al-'As came to Egypt with some ten thousand soldiers (most of whom left Egypt to continue their work in the rest of North Africa), after which a minority Arab aristocracy was established in place of the Byzantines. Coptic chroniclers of that time indicate in their writings that Egyptians (Copts) began to adopt Islam in steady numbers.
