How it all began... The province started registering cars in 1907, prescribing a one-time $5 fee. The motorist was provided with a small aluminum disc carrying the registration number to be mounted on the dashboard. The plates were owner-provided and bore the initials NS after the registration number. The province did not start supplying plates until rather late, so home made plates are rather common. Examples are found made of hand-painted tin or wood, leather with metal numbers. Even a few well-made porcelain plates have surfaced. In 1918 annual registration was required and the province began supplying the plates in pairs. It is possible the city of Halifax issued small porcelain plates for a one-time fee from about 1905 to '07. An example reading "HALIFAX AUTO REGISTER" has been reported in a Halifax Museum, but this has not been confirmed.

Richard Smith Arrives With Machinery
Richard Smith, of Staffordshire, England, arrived at Pictou on the brig Margaret Pelkington with a cargo of mining machinery, including boilers, cylinders, and other parts needed to assemble steam hoisting and pumping engines. Smith was the mining engineer for the General Mining Association of London, England, which then held the rights to most of the coal in Pictou County. Decades later, the business built up by the GMA became the foundation for Dominion Steel and Coal, Canada's largest industrial corporation, with a complex of coal mines, shipyards, steel plants and railways stretching from Wabana, Newfoundland, to Windsor, Ontario. 1827 December 7

History
Canadian Paraplegic Association was founded under the leadership of the late John G. Counsel, O.C., O.B.E., M.C. who was a paraplegic World War 2 veteran. Counsel and a group of veterans organized, with headquarters in Toronto where the largest number of military casualties with spinal cord injuries returned for hospitalization and treatment. Soon their mandate expanded to include civilians. A major accomplishment of this group was to ensure that each veteran casualty was to have his own wheelchair supplied by the Department of Veterans Affairs. Canadian Paraplegic Association advocated for the purchase of a newer prototype chair that had not been accepted in many circles. The Association persisted and these chairs made of metal and not of wood and that folded in the middle were purchased. Veterans were similarly domiciled in hospitals throughout Canada and local branches of the organization developed. Their goal was to move these veterans from these institutions to live independently in the community. The Atlantic Canada Division was founded by, the late Donald E. Curren C.M., Q.C., L.L.D. in 1952. He served as Executive Director until his retirement in 1984. By that time a division had been established in each of the Atlantic Provinces and he retired as Executive Director of the Nova Scotia Division. He held honorary doctorate degrees from both Saint Mary's University and Dalhousie University as well as being a member of the Order of Canada.

Identifying the Highland Scots:
Nineteenth century immigrants in Nova Scotia
by A. M. Austin
This paper is concerned with the scraping away of myths and stereotypes surrounding the Nova Scotian Scots. In particular, this paper will not simply recount the arrival of the Scottish immigrants, rather it will hopefully acknowledge a few of the key elements of the folk-culture of these people. Looking beyond traditional generalizations should help to illuminate some of the basic traits of the actual Scottish character, from which the identity of these nineteenth century immigrants may be revealed. The Highlanders are the descendants of the Gaelic branch of Celts who entered the British Isles a few centuries before the birth of Christ. Most of these people settled in Ireland when the Romans came during the first century A.D. By 400 A.D. a substantial number of these Irish Gaels crossed over and occupied the western Highlands and islands of what is modern day Scotland. Charles W. Dunn describes the emergence of a distinct Highland culture: Here, combining the missionary activities of the Christians with the military conquest of invaders, they established their own Gaelic culture. They introduced to the country their own monastic system, their own clan organization and legal code, their own forms of art, and their own Gaelic language, literature, and music.

Scots around the world
History of the Scots in New Scotland (Nova Scotia) Contributed by Janet Mackay New England, New France and New Spain were already established on this side of the Great Atlantic Roar" when New Scotland was founded by Sir William Alexander , and King James of Scotland in the early 1600s. At that time, New Scotland consisted approximately of the Atlantic Provinces as we know them today, and the Gaspe Peninsula. Sir William Alexander with King James devised a settlement scheme of granting the title "Baronet of Nova Scotia" to any who would purchase large grants of land in New Scotland (Nova Scotia), secure and settle those lands. These Baronets of Nova Scotia received their lands in New Scotland (Nova Scotia) during the ancient ceremony of "Earth and Stone" while standing on a plot of land deemed by imaginative legalese to be part of New Scotland (Nova Scotia). William Alexander, son of Sir William Alexander, brought out settlers to Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, in the late 1620s and established Charles Fort there. When the colony again went back to the French, about three years after their arrival, these Scottish emigrants were required to return to Scotland.

the Formation of the Nova Scotia Arts Council Andrew David Terris The Nova Scotia Arts Council (NSAC), a crown agency created by an act of the Nova Scotia Legislature in January 1996, was the result of almost 15 years of continuous community advocacy. The major events leading to its creation were as follows:
The Association of Professional Artists of Nova Scotia (TAPANS) is incorporated. It's goals are increased support for professional artists and the establishment of an arm's-length provincial arts council.
The TAPANS brief to the Nova Scotia Cultural Policy Conference calls for the creation of a provincial arts council.
Culture in Nova Scotia: The Final Report of the 1983 Nova Scotia Cultural Policy Conference indicates substantial support for arm's-length funding, peer assessment, and the formation of a provincial arts council.
The Nova Scotia Coalition on Arts and Culture (NSCAC) is formed.
The NSCAC organizes The Halifax Conference: A National Forum on Canadian Cultural Policy. The Conference Declaration affirms the importance of public funding of the arts through arm's-length agencies.

From 1750-1752, twelve ship loads of Germans arrived in Halifax, Nova Scotia, as part of an attempt at colonization of the territory by protestant Germans. The most comprehensive study of these Germans was done by Winthrop Pickard Bell and published in his book, The "foreign Protestants" and the settlement of Nova Scotia : the history of a piece of arrested British colonial policy in the eighteenth century , 1961. Much of the genealogical information on the colonists that he used in his study is found in four volumes in the Public Archives of Nova Scotia (MG 1, no. 109-111, but also on microfilm at the Family History Library #1421430). Copies of the passenger lists, victualling lists, military lists, lists of inhabitants in the colonies, and historical information on the Lunenburg and Halifax German colonies of Nova Scotia is also available on the Internet! Welcome Parrsboro is the largest town on the Minas Basin and a major tourist centre on this portion of the Glooscap Trail.
The town has accommodations, gift shops, restaurants, a medical centre, R.C.M.P., campgrounds, a quaint shopping area, parks, museums, a golf course, live theatre and a variety of nearby scenic drives.
In 1985, the biggest fossil find in North America was unearthed on the North Shore of the Minas Basin near Parrsboro. This discovery consisted of more than 100,000 pieces of 200 million year old fossils, the largest single collection of fossils, the first such collection found in North America and the first fossils in a series of dinosaur footprints, each the size of a penny, which are the smallest ever discovered.
As early as 1776, Parrsboro, then known as Partridge Island, was a relatively important settlement. In 1784, the present name was given in honor of Lieut. Col. John Parr, then Governor of Nova Scotia.
The Minas Basin is one of the locations of the world's highest tides, and their dramatic effect on shipping can be seen from the Parrsboro wharf when fishing boats and pleasure vessels are left stranded high and dry by the low tide. At high tide water fills the harbour and reaches the mouth of the small creek that runs under the main street.
