New England, New France and New Spain were already established on this side of the Great Atlantic Roar" when New Scotland was founded by Sir William Alexander , and King James of Scotland in the early 1600s. At that time, New Scotland consisted approximately of the Atlantic Provinces as we know them today, and the Gaspe Peninsula. Sir William Alexander with King James devised a settlement scheme of granting the title "Baronet of Nova Scotia" to any who would purchase large grants of land in New Scotland (Nova Scotia), secure and settle those lands. These Baronets of Nova Scotia received their lands in New Scotland (Nova Scotia) during the ancient ceremony of "Earth and Stone" while standing on a plot of land deemed by imaginative legalese to be part of New Scotland (Nova Scotia). William Alexander, son of Sir William Alexander, brought out settlers to Annapolis Royal, Nova Scotia, in the late 1620s and established Charles Fort there. When the colony again went back to the French, about three years after their arrival, these Scottish emigrants were required to return to Scotland. See Founding of New Scotland (Nova Scotia) More than a century later, when the French and the English had finished their "tug of war" in claiming Nova Scotia from each other, and the English finally kept it, Scottish emigrants again began to come here. They settled in all parts of Nova Scotia. When the 1871 census was taken, the Scots made up the greater percentage of the population in Colchester, Inverness, Pictou and Victoria Counties. They also settled in large numbers in each of the other counties and became one of the leading groups in developing New Scotland (Nova Scotia).

When the first settlers arrived in Cape Breton, one of the first things they noted was the abundance of rich, plentiful coal seams. This played a major part in such monumental tasks as the construction of the Fortress Louisbourg. Over the years, control of the mines passed back and forth between private and crown concerns. Throughout, the history of the coal mines has been deep and varied.

The Medical History Society of Nova Scotia is a charitable organization whose goals include the housing of medical artifacts, archives and books which relate to the medical heritage of Nova Scotia. This information dates as far back as 1605.
From the collections and fonds, our Society can offer insights into Nova Scotia's medical past. Our archives include day books dating back to the 1700's. We house as well, medical texts which describe long and sometimes forgotten techniques. Our activities in 2000-2002 have increased to meet a growing interest in and demand for information and artifacts which can recapture something of our fascinating medical history.

History of the Guild
Next time you walk past the Paper Chase on Blowers Street in Halifax, stop for a moment. If you have your camera - take one of this building for the record. What you will be recording is the birthplace of the predecessor of the Photographic Guild of Nova Scotia. In November 1947, on the second floor of this edifice, which was then the Camera Store of the Maritimes, owner Edward A. Bollinger convened a meeting of photographers with a view to formalizing a photo group. Present on that historic evening were: Russell E. Hefler , who was elected president, Peggy Wright and Cyril Smith, the first secretary and treasurer respectively. At their next meeting just a month later agreement was reached to call the organization, "The Color Photographic Guild of the Maritimes". They wasted little time. In the first month of the new year members held a studio night and, according to the record, arrived in costumes and theatrical makeup. Perhaps a celebration of their success, and an opportunity to photograph indoors safe from the January winds. Those photographic pioneers enjoyed celebrating and did it with class. Their first annual banquet was held in the Georgian Lounge of the Lord Nelson Hotel. That would be like having our annual banquet this year at one of the Sheraton's fancy ballrooms - maybe not a bad idea for the 50th anniversary. Early day Guild members religiously participated in planned

http://www.grassroutes.com/clare/acadian.htm

ACADIAN HISTORY
The name Acadia originally applied to the colonies of New France, to an area that included southeastern Quebec, eastern Maine, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island. Some say the name came from the Greek "Arcadia" meaning "rural contentment." It was thought to be named by Verazanno who sailed near the maritimes in 1524. The name "Acadian" was the name given to the early French settlers who migrated from France to Acadia. Note that the name "Acadian" was transformed into "Cajun" in Louisiana. The English pronunciation of "Acadien" explains its spelling (Acadien -> Acadjunn -> Cajun).
June of 1605 a ship came to the Island and the survivors were loaded aboard and brought to the site of Port Royal. Poutrincourt had chosen the site, built the Habitation and they had been greeted by the Native Indians who had become friends. The Natives taught them to survive using the land, they also shared their food, helped with the work, and spent time together learning and teaching in turn!
The colonization of Acadia starts with the founding of Port Royal in 1605. Many new French settlers arrived there, they worked hard, tilling the soil and erecting dikes which prevented high tides from soaking and ruining the main land. The dikes also led run-off from the fields back to the ocean. This special system was refined over long periods of time and called "Aboiteaux". They built houses, planted gardens, and upgraded the conditions of the Habitation. Marc Lescarbo wrote a play called "Le Theatre de Neptune"(Neptune Theatre) which established a theatre and began the Ordre de Bon Temps, which became the first social club in North America in 1606. Within a matter of years, the population there grew significantly. With patience and devoted time, Port Royal became a prosperous agricultural district.

What IS Cape Breton Counties Genealogy?
As one link in the Nova Scotia GenWeb Project , this site subscribes to the overall objectives of the project, the details of which can be found at the provincial site . Initially, any site reflects the knowledge and resources of only a few people, but since the inception of this site in 1996, Cape Breton Counties Genealogy has become a real community effort, in the true spirit of Cape Bretoners. The aim is to pull together all available resources and make them accessible from one site; if you know of a link or a resource or have a homepage that should be included on the site, please let us know . If you are able to transcribe original(unpublished) records, provide a list of useful books, or are willing to do lookups in your own resources, we will appreciate and give credit to your participation Almost all the pages on this site represent the original work of volunteers other than the site coordinator. I am, consequently, not the best person to ask for further information: I have a limited knowledge of any families other than my own lines. The e-mail address of the author of most pages is usually included on the page. This would be your best resource. Of course, any bad links, submissions of transcriptions, links to new resources, and glowing praise can be directed to

First designated as Port Forchu or Forked Harbour (a translation of the Mi'kmaq Maligeak by Samuel de Champlain, the new name was transferred from Yarmouth, Massachusetts, by New England Planters and fishermen. It appears first in the document "A Grant for a Township at Cape Forchu called Yarmouth (1 September 1759)". For many years, Yarmouth was the major ship building centre of Nova Scotia. By the 1870s Yarmouth reached its pinnacle of fame and possessed more tonnage per capita than any other seaport in the world. All of this was swept aside by the advent of steam and the consequent decline of Golden Age of Sail. Evidence of the prosperity of this bygone era may be found in the surviving domestic architecture of Yarmouth town and county. In addition, the Yarmouth County Museum depicts much of this history through displays of ship portraits, models, archives, and other artifacts. Yarmouth is also home to the Firefighters Museum of Nova Scotia, which houses a rare collection of early equipment and memorabilia.
