  • Speak your mind in the CNEWS Forum N.S. minority government survives first test By MURRAY BREWSTER HALIFAX (CP) - Nova Scotia's minority government breezed through its first real test Tuesday by surviving a budget vote in the legislature with the help of the Opposition New Democrats. Premier John Hamm's Conservatives made some major concessions to stay in power, including the partial rescinding of the party's 10 per cent personal income tax, which was only introduced on Jan. 1. The final vote in the legislature was 40 in favour of the budget, 10 against and one absence. "We worked very hard over the past winter to come up with a budget that was right and one that could be supported by opposition parties," the premier told reporters later. "It was not an easy exercise."

WebPosted August 11, 2003 A new era in Nova Scotia politics started Aug. 5 when cranky voters erased John Hamm's majority government, forcing the premier to search out allies in the opposition ranks. "Nova Scotia politics just got a lot more interesting," a smiling Hamm told supporters at his victory party. The PC party gained the necessary seats to form government, having been elected in 25 districts ? but that's two short of a majority. The New Democrats came in second with 15 seats. The Liberals under rookie leader Danny Graham took third place with 12 seats. "Now is the time for all three political parties to renew their commitment to good government," said Hamm, extending an offer to the Liberal and NDP leaders to work together. "There is plenty of room for common ground. Tonight I'm issuing a call for bold ideas."

Insurance Bureau urges Nova Scotia to scrap insurance rollback
Last Updated Tue, 28 Oct 2003 19:02:12 HALIFAX - The Insurance Bureau of Canada is urging the Nova Scotia government to scrap its new auto insurance legislation. The Nova Scotia government passed legislation on Monday that forces insurance companies to lower their premiums by 20 per cent.
IBC president Stan Griffin says the new bill will provide no savings for insurance companies. He says both the Conservative government and the opposition are being irresponsible in pushing ahead with a product they both know is not financially viable. Ron Russell, the minister in charge of insurance, insists government estimates show insurers will see substantial savings. Under the terms of the new legislation those who claim for pain and suffering for "minor injuries" will be entitled to a maximum payment of $2,500. Halifax is where the maiden voyage of Titanic really ended, with the most lasting legacy from the sinking located here.
T he world was stunned in 1912 by the loss of the liner Titanic on her maiden voyage. Halifax, Nova Scotia , located on the eastern coast of Canada, has one of the most moving and intimate connections with the Titanic disaster, playing a key role during the tragedy's aftermath and becoming the final resting place of many of her unclaimed victims. T hree Halifax ships were involved in the grim task of recovering victims - many of whom were laid to rest in three of our city's cemeteries. Rows of black granite headstones, each inscribed with the same date, April 15, 1912, are a stark reminder of the disaster.

These artifacts were all pulled from the water within weeks of the sinking by ships from Halifax searching for Titanic victims. The exhibit features wooden artifacts collected at the scene of the disaster, including one of the only

    Pre-Confederation Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia before the time of the Confederation debates was a prosperous colony of approximately 350 000 people, spread around the coastline and throughout the Annapolis Valley. The population included people of British, Irish, Scottish, German, Mi'kmaq and Acadian descent. The largest community was the city of Halifax; other major centres included Yarmouth and Truro. The economy was based on the traditional industries of fishing, shipping and shipbuilding, agriculture, and natural resources such as timber. However, the newer industries of manufacturing and the railway were beginning to make an appearance. The region had a close trading relationship with New England, aided by proximity and the Reciprocity Treaty . The sea-based economy of the region, combined with Halifax's function as a garrison city and its relative isolation from the Canadas, helped to forge a close relationship with Great Britain. The colony was one of the first to be given responsible government , in 1848. While men had almost universal suffrage, no women had the vote. The major political parties were the Conservatives and Liberals; their leaders were
