Case Study A Waycobah First Nation Community (Nova Scotia)
Overview The Waycobah First Nation Community project was created to showcase the community of Waycobah. The goal of the teachers and students was to inform the global community about the Waycobah First Nation by sharing stories of their history, providing geographic information about their region, telling the stories of their community leaders, and sharing part of their current culture and language. The project started when the mathematics and computer-related studies teacher at Waycobah First Nation Secondary School found out about the GrassRoots contest and decided to participate in the "Communities@ca" category by engaging her students in the project by building a community Web page. For this interdisciplinary project, she collaborated with the senior high Mi'kmaq studies and language teacher. In her class, students compiled profiles of the seniors that were then integrated onto the Web site. The teachers planned the project with support from The Mi'kmaq Kina'matnewey Technical Support people (now known as the Atlantic Canada First Nation Help Desk (www.firstnationhelp.com)), who also provided the school with the space to host their Web site.

The Atlantic batters the eastern shore. The Bay of Fundy separates the southern part of the peninsula from the mainland, with the Gulf of St Lawrence to the north. Much of the province is covered by rivers. The land rises to 540m (1770ft) on the northeast islands.
Language: Although Canada is officially bilingual (English and French), English is the main language spoken in Nova Scotia.

NOVA SCOTIA EXPORTS

From The Yarmouth Herald, August 18, 1837 Halifax Acadian Recorder.
GOVERNMENT PASSES REQUIRED FOR
TRAVEL FROM NOVA SCOTIA TO NEW BRUNSWICK AND PRINCE EDWARD ISLAND
Both paragraphs excerpted from The Yarmouth Herald, September 29, 1837 Important to Travellers In consequence of a trial at the September Term of the Supreme Court, held at Pictou, the Captain of the Cape Breton Steamer requires all passengers to exhibit the pass of the Provincial Secretary, or give security, to prevent him from loss on their account. Halifax Acadian Telegraph It appears that, in consequence of a recent decision in the Supreme Court at Pictou, persons must provide a pass before they can transport themselves to the adjoining Colonies of P.E. Island and New Brunswick. This may be sound, but it will be harrassing and inconvenient law, and if acted upon generally, by Steamers and Coasting Craft, will almost prevent any thing like easy intercourse between the people of the Provinces for every man about crossing the Bay of Fundy or Northumberland Strait, must post his name several days before, and pay one shilling, or give bonds and pay 3s. 6d. Such a system would do more mischief, and waste more money, than could arise from the flight of scores of absconding debtors... From the

The Names of the Nova Scotia Weather Forecast Districts have changed!
Beginning on March 20th, 2002, Environment Canada will provide Nova Scotians with local weather warnings and forecasts tailored for smaller geographical areas. The Maritimes Weather Centre will increase the number of weather forecast districts from nine to 23 to provide more focused weather information, and to fine-tune weather warnings. On those few days in the year when the weather is similar throughout the province, you may still hear the same forecast for all of Nova Scotia, or one for all of the mainland and another one for all of Cape Breton. A Mi'kmaq was the first native American in North America to return from Europe as a teacher. North America's first Agricultural Fair was held in Windsor, Nova Scotia in 1752. The great immigration of 'New England Planters' to Nova Scotia in 1760, created a majority of Yankee citizens at the time of the American Revolution in 1776. Only the British naval base in Halifax prevented America's 14th English Colony from signing at the Declaration of Independence, which would have ended British rule in North America. The famous Paul Revere took his degree in Freemasonry near Yarmouth, Nova Scotia around 1772. George Washington's greatest regret was not being able to support the Nova Scotia Revolutionaries in 1776.
