its future too, is heavily dependent upon the unique character of its geography. Alongthe Atlantic coast of nova scotia ocean tides account for a general rise
http://www.town.parrsboro.ns.ca/OTTAWA.html
Welcome Parrsboro is the largest town on the Minas Basin and a major tourist centre on this portion of the Glooscap Trail.
The town has accommodations, gift shops, restaurants, a medical centre, R.C.M.P., campgrounds, a quaint shopping area, parks, museums, a golf course, live theatre and a variety of nearby scenic drives.
In 1985, the biggest fossil find in North America was unearthed on the North Shore of the Minas Basin near Parrsboro. This discovery consisted of more than 100,000 pieces of 200 million year old fossils, the largest single collection of fossils, the first such collection found in North America and the first fossils in a series of dinosaur footprints, each the size of a penny, which are the smallest ever discovered.
As early as 1776, Parrsboro, then known as Partridge Island, was a relatively important settlement. In 1784, the present name was given in honor of Lieut. Col. John Parr, then Governor of Nova Scotia.
The Minas Basin is one of the locations of the world's highest tides, and their dramatic effect on shipping can be seen from the Parrsboro wharf when fishing boats and pleasure vessels are left stranded high and dry by the low tide. At high tide water fills the harbour and reaches the mouth of the small creek that runs under the main street.

Jeff Newbery is continuing at the helm of The Great Canadian Geography Challenge as the provincial coordinator in Nova Scotia. Jeff has worked hard to promote this geography youth project. Saint Mary’s University’s Geography Department has been the site for the provincial finals since its inception through the shepherding efforts of Dr. Robert McCalla and Dr. Hugh Millward. Canadian Council for Geographic Education Institutes Alumnae provide many of the volunteers to make this program such a success. Nova Scotia Teachers Union and the Social Studies Teachers Association has recognized this geography youth project’s merits and has been the sponsor for its lunches. Saint Mary’s University Geography Department in May hosted a meeting for individuals interested in a local chapter of the CCGE. CCGE Chair Stuart Semple gave a presentation highlighting many of the geography education initiatives in Australia. I. GEOGRAPHY II. ETHNOGRAPHY When the European colonists first came to Nova Scotia they found the country inhabited by a tribe of Indians known as the Micmacs. These savages were converted to Christianity by the early French missionaries. Their descendants, numbering 1542 at the time of the last official census (1901), belong to the Catholic Church. They live principally on reservations set aside for them by the Government. The duty of caring for the Indians has been assigned by the British North American Act to the Parliament of Canada. The descendants of the French settlers form an important body. They numbered at the time of the last census 45,161. They also are Catholics and are noted for their industry and frugality. The Germans form another important element. They are descended from the body of German settlers who arrived in Nova Scotia shortly after the founding of Halifax and in 1753 removed to the County of Lunenburg. Principally Lutherans and Anglicans , they are thrifty and industrious. The English settlers came in after the defeat of the French, and after the Revolutionary War from twenty to thirty thousand loyalists left the United States and settled in Nova Scotia. Later on came accessions from Ireland and Scotland. At the last census these last-mentioned races were estimated as follows: English, 159,753; Scottish, 143,382; Irish; 54,710. There were also 5984 negroes in the province. They are descended from slaves who were brought to Nova Scotia before the abolition of slavery in British dominions. The total population of the Province of Nova Scotia in 1901 was 459,572, of whom 129,578 were returned as Catholics.
