Nova Scotia Nova Scotia is perfect vacation country. There are ten scenic trails to follow throughout the province and each offers unique sights and sounds. Only a couple have been briefly touched on below. The Evangeline Trail follows the along the Bay of Fundy, known for the highest tides in the world. Watch whales from Briar Island at the farthest point of the Digby Neck. Take a tour through the Annapolis Valley where the fertile farmlands produce delicious fruits and vegetables and many spin off industries such as soap making. The earliest inhabitants of Nova Scotia were the Mi'kmaq Indians. Their history tells of a magical Indian named Glooscap that could control the tides in the Bay of Fundy. The Glooscap Trail offers visions of nature at it's most pristine and beautiful. The cliffs near Parsboro are striking - look around and find some more history in the plentiful rocks and fossils.

    http://www.geog.susx.ac.uk/fieldclasses/novascotia/
Nova Scotia Field Class Aptly described on a provincial vehicle license plate as "Canada's Ocean Playground", the province of Nova Scotia is almost a peninsula: to the west is the Bay of Fundy, to the north the Gulf of St. Lawrence, and to the south and east the Atlantic Ocean. The seas play a major role in the physical geography of Nova Scotia, moderating the climate, shaping the coastline and leaving a sedimentary record of changing sea levels. During the ice ages, Nova Scotia was overridden by glaciers whose sediments and erosional features provide a record of ice-age history. Sussex's field class to Nova Scotia examines aspects of its glacial history, sea-level change and coastal geomorphology. Highlights of the trip include visits to:
    • the Bay of Fundy , location of the world's highest tidal range (=15 m)
    • Peggy's Cove , a scenic area of glacially-eroded granite on the Atlantic coast:
    • Joggins , on the Chignecto Peninsula, where three till sheets are superimposed:
    • Parrsboro , where an outwash plain and delta is dissected into fluvial terraces
    • the Bedford Institute of Oceanography at Dartmouth, Canada's largest centre for ocean research, and among the most-respected research institutions in the world.

Environment Canada estimates that Nova Scotia has more storms than any other part of Canada, often influenced by severe weather passing over the Atlantic Ocean. In late summer and early fall, the region can be hit by the tail ends of both hurricanes and tropical storms as they spiral up the east coast of North America. Winds can exceed 150 km/h and bring with them heavy rains and wave heights as high as 14 metres, wreaking havoc on land and sea. Winter brings ice storms and blizzards, reducing visibility and causing damage. Return to Et cetera

Waves swept away lifeboats on the port side, and within minutes, the Atlantic keeled over. Some of the 933 passengers and crew made it to shore. But by dawn, 562 people, including all the women and all but one child, had perished.
Williams was far from the only captain to have run his ship off course in Nova Scotian waters, where treacherous conditions make the province one of the shipwreck capitals of North America. BELOW Nova Scotia is one of the stormiest regions in the country, sometimes battered for days at a time with gale-force winds and huge waves that can drive even the most powerful of vessels against an unforgiving shore. Deep, rocky channels line the coast, and submerged shoals and rocks present deadly obstacles. And with cool and warm currents colliding offshore, fog can often shroud the coast. Combine its geographical character with bustling harbours, more than 300 years of primitive navigational aids and a proximity to busy international shipping lanes and rich fishing grounds, and it is no mystery why so many ships have gone to their watery graves off Nova Scotia.

The coat of arms of the province of Nova Scotia, Canada , officially the Arms of Her Majesty in Right of the Province of Nova Scotia, is the oldest provincial achievement of arms in Canada, and the oldest British coat of arms outside Great Britain. It was granted in 1625 by King Charles I for the first British colony on the Canadian mainland. The arms were also borne by the Baronets of Nova Scotia, a chivalric order.

Many countries, universities, and other institutions have mottos, as do families with coats of arms. These mottos are traditionally in Latin or Romance languages, as well as in English or German. There are many exceptions, particularly in modern heraldry: for example, the motto of the University of Hawaii is in Hawaiian, and the motto of Nunavut is in Inuktitut.
