Geography
One of the Maritime Provinces , Nova Scotia comprises a mainland peninsula and, across the Canso Strait, the adjacent Cape Breton Island . It is bounded on the N by the Gulf of St. Lawrence and Northumberland Strait, across which lies Prince Edward Island; on the E and S by the Atlantic Ocean; and on the W by New Brunswick, from which it is largely separated by the Bay of Fundy but to which the Chignecto Isthmus connects it. The climate is moderate and rainfall abundant. The east coast is rocky, with numerous bays and coves, and is dotted with many charming fishing villages. Off the beautiful south shore is Sable Island, called the graveyard of the Atlantic for its many shipwrecks; on the west coast huge Fundy tides wash the shores, extending into the Minas Basin and the Annapolis River estuary. Annapolis Royal , site of the first permanent Canadian settlement (Port-Royal, 1610). Cape Breton Island (est. 1936) and Kejimkujik (est. 1968) national parks are in Nova Scotia. Abundant game, all types of fishing, and some of the best sailing on the continent attract visitors. The capital and largest city is Halifax ; other important cities are Dartmouth Sydney Glace Bay Truro , and New Glasgow Sections in this article:

The Bay of Fundy is a globally significant ecosystem. It is the nursery for the rarest of the world's great whales, the North Atlantic Right Whale; the most important migratory feeding area for shorebirds in eastern North America; and it is the summer feeding ground for all American shad spawned in rivers from Florida to Labrador. Captain Joshua Slocum, the first man to sail alone around the world was born in Westport on Brier Island, Nova Scotia. He sailed around the world in his 37-foot sloop "Spray" departing from Boston in April 1895 and arriving home in June 1898, landing in Newport, Rhode Island. The "fossil cliffs" at Joggins washed by the world famous tides of the Bay of Fundy were formed during a critical juncture in Earth history called the Triassic-Jurassic boundary. Each year the tides of Fundy expose a new layer of sediments and, with them, new fossils which may ultimately provide the answers to some of our most perplexing questions about the rise and fall of dinosaurs and the emergence of mammals. From spectacular beaches to rugged shores to craggy cliffs, the ebb and tide of the Atlantic Ocean dominates our scenery and way of life. But there is much more. As part of my Professional Development I was fortunate enough to take part in a visit to Nova Scotia in Canada . Our brief was to focus on Transition within the different key stages. I decided I was also going to use the visit to focus on Literacy in another country and to bring home some useful tips and ideas for my subject. In addition to this I also decided that as a Geography co-ordinator I was going to use this trip to learn about a part of Canada I knew very little about and involve my class in this enquiry learning process. We began by locating Nova Scotia on our class globe, atlas and world map. We looked at weather information on the Internet and various sites for maps and local information, trade and industry. I asked my class to write open letters for pen pals in case I was able to find a school willing to set up a link. Whilst I was there I took many photographs to show what the place, the schools and the children were like. I was very lucky to find a school, Salmon River Elementary School in Truro , that were really keen to set up an email/ pen pal link. I collected newspapers, postcards, money, flags, food and even maple leaves to bring back to give my class a real ‘taste’ of Nova Scotia.

Nova Scotia is a province of rolling hills, flowing rivers and sharp cliffs. This province’s landscape and climate, has often been compared to that of Scotland. How fitting that Nova Scotia is in fact Latin for New Scotland!
Take a look at some of the facts about our land, sea and seasons. Geography Nova Scotia is 55,000 square kilometres in size.
  • Our province is connected to the province of New Brunswick and the rest of Canada, by the 28 kilometre Isthmus of Chignecto. The Canso Causeway joins Cape Breton Island with mainland Nova Scotia. Nova Scotia’s coastline, if you stretched it out as far as it would go, is 7,400 kilometres in length. But the overall length of the province is actually only 575 kilometres. The average width is 130 kilometres. The highest point in Nova Scotia is at White Hill Lake in Victoria County, and is part of the Cape Breton Highlands National Park. It stands 530 metres above sea level.
