Media Education in Nova Scotia This section comprises a curricular overview (below), as well as information about professional development for media education, and about Nova Scotia’s provincial media education association, Media Literacy Nova Scotia (MLNS) in the sidebar. Also included in the sidebar are curriculum outcome charts from Nova Scotia’s English Language Arts, Social Studies and Information Technology curricula. These charts include links to supporting MNet resources and lessons. Last updated July 2002 Curricular Overview The Nova Scotia Department of Education and Culture was the leader in the development of the Atlantic Canada English Language Arts curriculum, which was carried out under the auspices of the Atlantic Provinces Education Foundation (APEF) and released in 1996. Media literacy figures prominently in the APEF English Language Arts curriculum. The curriculum builds on the concept that literacy means moving beyond competency in the written word, to the ability to use and understand visual and technological means of communication. Its goal is to create critical media consumers who can, and will, bring critical analysis to their use of the media. In Nova Scotia, media literacy is also developed through the APEF social studies curriculum and a new Canadian History course. In Nova Scotia, media literacy is integrated throughout the curricula at both the elementary and secondary levels, especially as reflected in five of the six essential Graduation Learnings – Aesthetic Expression, Citizenship, Communication, Personal Development, Problem Solving and Technical Competence.

About us
Send me a Brochure Tripbuilder (Shopping Cart) Send me a Quotation ... Pacific News member of Canada Nova Scotia Nova Scotia is very nearly an island, virtually surrounded by the sea. An irregular coastline and a scattering of small islands give this 340-mile-long peninsula hundreds of harbors of all descriptions. In these ports, thousands of boats land a wealth of lobster, scallops, cod, and haddock. Nova Scotia's capital and cultural center, Halifax, is the province's chief port and the naval center of the nation. Forests cover three-fourths of the province's rolling terrain. Lumbering and industry, from textiles to aircraft engines, help to round out the economy. Apples, blueberries, and Christmas trees are all shipped from here, bound primarily for the United States. Summer brings waves of visitors to explore the peninsula's scenic wonders and its unique culture. After the expulsion of French-speaking Acadians in the mid-eighteenth century, the immigration of Scottish Highlanders began. Their heritage lives on today in events like the highland games and the International Gathering of the Clans. History The first permanent settlement in Canada was the French colony Port Royal (now Annapolis, Nova Scotia), established by Pierre de Monts in 1605. The British and French feuded over Port Royal until 1713, when all of Acadia was ceded to the British under the Treaty of Utrecht. The Acadians, mainly settlers from France, posed a great security threat according to the British, so in 1755, Britain expelled all Acadians who would not swear allegiance to the British Crown.
