Objective
The original exploreNS.com web site was created in 1995. Since that time, the primary goal of the site, which is the promotion of Nova Scotia as a tourist destination, has remained unchanged. However, as the online services of the site expanded to better serve their high volumes of internet traffic, the content, technology, and functionality necessary to achieve their goals required updating. The information and functionality of the site were still consistent with their goals, but it had reached a level where it needed to be re-designed in order to address the issues that a growing body of information and technology create. Solution The foundation of this re-design began with an extensive analysis and re-development of the information architecture, in order to create a logical and intuitive navigational system. This change served the dual purpose of being easily modifiable, as the site continues to grow, thereby increasingly the longevity of the design, as well as improving the navigation for the frequent or first time web visitor. The site was then re-designed visually in order to create a modern appearance and an integrated marketing approach. www.novascotia.com

Aquaculture
Start Date: September Length: One Year Credential: Certificate Location: Shelburne Campus This program is undergoing renewal, which may result in changes to information presented here. This continuous improvement process involves extensive consultation with employers, faculty, graduates and students to ensure that program outcomes continue to meet the needs of employers and students.
Program Description
The term aquaculture refers to the culturing and raising of aquatic plants or animals. In this program you will learn how to be an aquaculturist, raising fish, shellfish and aquatic plants, normally in a controlled environment. You will develop skills in the operation, maintenance and management of hatchery and grow out facilities. More technical aspect such as animal nutrition, disease diagnosis and treatment, water quality analysis and the evaluation of new aquaculture species will also be emphasized.
Employment Opportunities
Employment in this industry is, at times, strenuous, and involves both indoor and outdoor work. In Atlantic Canada the work is largely related to trout, salmon, mussels and oysters, although other species are cultured on a smaller scale. Graduates may seek employment with private aquaculture operations, government operations and with experimental aquatic farms. You may also become self-employed, owning and operating your own aquaculture operation.

Nova Scotia What’s Nova Scotia Like?
Absolutely beautiful! We have 37 national parks in Atlantic Canada, and 11 are in Nova Scotia. These sites are unique places that showcase the rich diversity of our landscapes-both natural and cultural. The total length of our province is 575 kilometres and its average width is about 130 kilometres. The Northumberland Strait, on the north shore, separates Nova Scotia from Prince Edward Island. The north shore has many gorgeous beaches with white sand and gentle slopes, perfect for farming. Nova Scotia has four distinct seasons; however, the climate is very unpredictable. In the summer it can get very hot and in the winter it can get very cold. The weather varies from day to day (according to the season) it can go from –4 degrees F to the low 90’s. If you look at a globe, you will see that Nova Scotia is at the same latitude as the American State of Oregon and Southern France. Not quite the “frozen north” some might imagine. Check out our province on the Internet at: http://nsonline.com

Cultural Origins
The First People
The first people to come to the area are known to archaeologists as the Palaeo-Indians . A known habitation site at Debert, Nova Scotia, is one of the most important finds of this period in eastern North America. One of the most distinctive artifacts associated with this group is the fluted spear point Very little evidence exists for the presence of people in Nova Scotia between 9,000 and 5000 years ago. However, archaeological finds from other parts of Atlantic Canada and New England indicate that people were in the region. From about 5000 to 2,500 years ago evidence does suggest that people are living in the area we know today as Nova Scotia. This period (9,000-2,500 BP) is known to archaeologists as the Archaic Period Following the Archaic Period is the Maritime Woodland Period which runs from about 2500 years ago to European contact. One of the most distinctive features of this period is the presence of clay pottery.
Colonial Settlement
Although evidence suggests that Basque, Portuguese and French fisherman were making seasonal visits to the area during the sixteenth century, the first known permanent European settlement in Nova Scotia was established by the French at Port Royal in 1605.
