Fodors Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, Prince Edward Island > Customer Review #1: Canadian Maritimes guide

I am planning a trip to the Canadian Maritimes the summer of 2002. I purchased Fodors Nova Scotia, New Brunswick, PEI guide to assist in my plans. So far, I have found this book to be a valuable resource. It is arranged first by province, then by towns/sites within each area. For example, in the Nova Scotia section, there is basic opening information about the province (its history, culture, climate, etc), then there is a large section just for Halifax. Within that listing, you find numerous places for site seeing, place to eat, to lodge, to shop. One aspect of the book I especially like is called "Off the beaten path", where you can find unusual places worth visiting. The guide is print-only, with maps, so the only thing that could make it better would be a few photographs. I would recommend this book for anyone planning a visit to the Maritimes this year.

Destination Nova Scotia: Its Culture and Landscapes Photographs by Albert Lee Text by Alexa Thompson Nimbus Publishing - 64 pages Cost: $14.95 Softcover ISBN-551109-282-4 reviewed by Ronnie Scullion Albert Lee's mastery with the camera is evident in the richly textured
and inspired images he has gathered together for us in "Destination Nova Scotia: Its Culture and Landscapes". His photographic essay of the province draws on the diversity of the people and the colourful, changing vistas. As Lee comments in the Preface, "Destination
Nova Scotia is a very brief (and subjective) summary of only a few of my favourite sites across the province. Nova Scotia continues to be a destination for my camera and my heart."
Light and shadow dance across the pages. Patterns in the landscapes are evoked, suggestive of exotic fabrics, mosaic tiles or painted canvases.
Near the Scott paper mill in Pictou bright sunlight is reflected off the
waters forming a luminescent background against which the silhouettes of cormorants sitting atop pylons are set. Water and light are sharply contrasted, the resulting effect is a veined pattern suggestive of a decorative batik cloth. In another picture, the muted light and soft amber tones of sunset over a Musquodoboit lake become background to the long grasses and reeds in the shallow waters. The photograph has the distinct appearance of a pen and ink drawing.

The Celtic Knot of Language and Music
by Jackie Dunn
During Gaelic Cultural Awareness Month it is most fitting to look at the relationship between the Gaelic language and our Celtic music. The Scottish Gaelic language and music had been brought to North America centuries ago via the Scottish settlers and has been fostered and sustained to this day. It is difficult to discuss this ancient music without reference to language and the overall culture and lifestyle of the Gaelic people. Musicologists believe there exists a profound bond between language and music - and what other culture could be more strongly oral in its traditions than the Gaelic culture? One could easily conclude that it is very difficult to separate the Gaelic language from its music since both form a strand in the Celtic 'knot' or culture. Each one depends on the other. If the language did not possess such power, much of our instrumental music would have been lost over time. With such a vast storehouse of Scottish Gaelic music already preserved, the Gaelic 'flavor' of our music should last but the oral component of the culture will be all important for future non-Gaelic speaking musicians. The designation of the month of May as Gaelic Cultural Awareness Month should encourage us all to preserve and promote our Gaelic language, music and culture so that it may flourish for generations to come.

GAELIC CULTURE Many Gaelic traditions are still prevalent in Nova Scotia; singing, piping, fiddling, step dancing, among others. Use the links to the left to read about various forms of the Gaelic culture. The picture below shows a milling frolic, an activity still very popular, although used primarily as a social gathering tool and an opportunity to practice the Gaelic milling songs.
