T he Acadians are descendants of approximately 100 French families who settled along the shores of the Baie francaise (now the Bay of Fundy) during the 17th century. A distinct Acadian culture gradually evolved. The Acadians fished and farmed, and claimed valuable farmlands from the bay by building dykes. A sense of community life and independence grew as they worked together to survive. By 1750, the population of Acadia had exceeded 10,000. I n was not long, however, before the Acadians were embroiled in the French-British territorial disputes. In 1755, fearing that the Acadians would support the French, the British government demanded that they sign an unconditional oath of allegiance to the Crown. Most refused, wishing to remain neutral. The infamous Acadian Expulsion resulted. From 1755, over 8,000 Acadians were deported to New England, to the southern colonies and to Europe (France and England). T he Acadians were allowed to return to Nova Scotia in 1764. However, the fertile lands they had worked were now occupied by other settlers. Since the British would not allow the Acadians to form large settlements, they gradually settled along the various remote coastal regions of the province.

the Formation of the Nova Scotia Arts Council Andrew David Terris The Nova Scotia Arts Council (NSAC), a crown agency created by an act of the Nova Scotia Legislature in January 1996, was the result of almost 15 years of continuous community advocacy. The major events leading to its creation were as follows:
The Association of Professional Artists of Nova Scotia (TAPANS) is incorporated. It's goals are increased support for professional artists and the establishment of an arm's-length provincial arts council.
The TAPANS brief to the Nova Scotia Cultural Policy Conference calls for the creation of a provincial arts council.
Culture in Nova Scotia: The Final Report of the 1983 Nova Scotia Cultural Policy Conference indicates substantial support for arm's-length funding, peer assessment, and the formation of a provincial arts council.
The Nova Scotia Coalition on Arts and Culture (NSCAC) is formed.
The NSCAC organizes The Halifax Conference: A National Forum on Canadian Cultural Policy. The Conference Declaration affirms the importance of public funding of the arts through arm's-length agencies.

Much of Kings County's allure is in the way the graciousness of the past is woven into the tapestry of the present. The history of Kings County is long and tangible. Five thousand years before the first European arrivals Cape Blomidon was home to the legendary Mi'kmaq god, Glooscap, and the Mi'kmaq people made their home here hunting, fishing and traveling the waterways in and around Kings County.
The French Acadians settled here in the early 1600's and started construction of an extensive dyke system. Until their deportation in 1755 by colonial troops from New England, the Acadians lived in this area for 120 years and built prosperous communities. The New England Planters settled lands left vacant by Acadians. and many of their descendants farm the lands still. Kings Community Economic Development Agency

... Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia
Nova Scotia's 580-kilometres-long peninsula is surrounded by water. With an area of 55,284 square kilometres and average width of 128 kilometres, no part of the province is far from the sea. Its geographic location, together with large, ice-free deep-water harbours, have been key factors in the province's economic development. The Micmac Indians inhabited Nova Scotia long before the first settlers arrived from Europe. The first visitors, however, were Norsemen in the early 11th century. In the seventeenth century, all of Nova Scotia, as well as parts of Quebec, New Brunswick and Maine, which made up an area known as Acadia, were inhabited by the French. It later became a British colony and, in 1848, Nova Scotia was granted responsible government. It was one of the four provinces that constituted the new federation called the Dominion of Canada in 1867. At that time, the province was on the forefront of international shipbuilding and the lumber and fishing trades. The first and second world wars emphasized the importance of Halifax, Nova Scotia's capital, as one of the world's major military ports.

(subtitled " Femme Micmac") In Nova Scotia, the most obvious and largest, being those people who became known as the Acadians. Adopting the best, and occasionally worst, aspects of both cultures, they carved out their niche in the country and reserved their place in history. During the Acadian Expulsion during the mid-1700's, many refused to leave their homes and land, and went deep into the forests of the interior to escape deportation. Their descendants have stayed together over the centuries in such communities as Tusket, Quinan and others around Yarmouth, Shelburne and Digby Counties. Others fled to New Brunswick, Quebec and Maine. Many of the descendants of these individuals returned after 1765 to their beloved homeland of Nova Scotia.

The sod turning ceremony took place on April 24, 1982, seventeen months later the Centre was officially opened on September 17, 1983. Many events have taken place at the Centre, such as cultural portrayals in the form of music, plays, concerts, as well as educational activities in the form of workshops, lectures and guided tours. Programs of the Black Cultural Centre extend beyond it doors to the broader community of Nova Scotia. This outreach is achieved through cultural events across Nova Scotia. Drum The drum with its drumbeat represents the centre of all life as if it were the heart providing life with its heartbeat. Centre to all things in creation is the drum, in the same way as the heart provides life for the body. Generally all Native people, for centuries and centuries, have held on to the belief that the heart and the drum share the same purpose and responsibility, that is, providing life through its beat. This connection of the drum and the heart as the centre and the source of life promotes a "oneness" concept between man and nature. Seeing the world in this unique perception therefore cultivates a special bond, a very personal man/world relationship that manifests itself to giving Native people a sense of genuine love and respect for all living things of Nature.
Smudging To do a Smudging ceremony, burn the clipping of these herbs (dried), rub your hands in the smoke and then gather the smoke and bring it into your body or rub it onto yourself especially onto any area you feel needs spiritual healing. Keep praying all the while that the unssen powers of the plant will cleanse your spirit. Sometimes one person will smudge another, or a group of people, using hands or more often a feather to lightly brush the smoke over the other people. The Elders say that all ceremonies, tribal or private must be entered into with a good heart, so that we can pray, sing and walk in a sacred manner and be helped by the spirit to enter the sacred realm.
