Halifax Regional Municipality, Nova Scotia
Encyclopedia Definition: Halifax, Nova Scotia
Halifax Regional Municipality (HRM) is a Canadian regional municipality . It is the provincial capital and largest population centre in Nova Scotia , and the economic centre of the Atlantic Provinces . In the early the provincial government sought to reduce the number of municipal governments in Halifax County and Cape Breton County and created a task force in to pursue this rationalization. In , an Act to Incorporate the Halifax Regional Municipality received Royal Assent in the provincial legislature and the HRM was created on April 1 by amalgamting the neighbouring cities of Halifax and Dartmouth with the town of Bedford and rural Halifax County. Sable Island is also considered to be jurisdictionally part of HRM, despite being located 180 km offshore. The population of HRM is approximately 360,000 making it the nation's 13th largest population centre. People from Halifax are called Haligonians. This term has been borrowed since amalgamation to apply more broadly to all residents of HRM, although many citizens in Dartmouth and smaller centres in the municipality tend to avoid use of the term when applied to themselves. In fact, despite amalgamation, most residents of the municipality (and

Halifax - Nova Scotia - Canada's City of Sails
By Richard Pennick
The bustling old sea-port of Halifax, Nova Scotia may remind you of your own home town at first glance. The business district spills out on to the water; cafes and restaurants have nested in the old Maritime Services buildings. Ferries ply back and forth and commuters battle the traffic on the harbour bridge. Across the harbour is the community of Dartmouth whose tranquil history was violently punctuated in 1917, when it was leveled by the explosion of a munitions ship in 1917, killing 1,600 people! Wednesday night racing out of the Royal Nova Scotia Yacht Club (once challenged for the America's Cup), makes this Canada's `city of sails' and weekend sailboats colour the harbour as they navigate ferries, navy ships, trawlers, and container ships. The disused buildings of the old quarantine station line an island hillside within view of Halifax diners, and the Maritime museums tell the stories of Scottish and other migration to these shores. The restaurants take pride in serving fresh fruit of the sea, and one would be remiss for not sampling an Atlantic lobster, or the scallops. Lobster houses are fun. Seated at long tables piled high with fresh bread with a bib around your neck - steamed lobsters, claws and all - are laid before you. Implements include a nut cracker, and if for your waistline, there's hot drawn butter to dip the lobster meat in once you have liberated it from its shell. A bowl of lemon water to rinse your finger, and a towel to dry, and you are ready for another one. Acadian music surrounds - the experience is unforgettable.

Nova Scotia, Canada
Welcomes you
For a good reason Nova Scotia is known as Canada's Ocean Playground. For many Nova Scotians the sea is main part of their lives - either to make a living or for recreation.
The coastline stretches for 7,400 kilometres and is indented by thousands of bays and inlets. The coast is dotted by more than 3,800 islands. Due to the influence of the sea the climate is mild, summers are comfortable and fall pleasant.
There are many things to do in Nova Scotia. Parks, hiking trails, lakes, streams, waterfalls and wildlife sanctuaries are a paradise for nature enthusiasts. Sailing, cycling, river rafting, kayaking and canoeing to name just a few activities the province of Nova Scotia has to offer. This is completed by entertainment, culture, historic sites and of course fine dining. The Highlands National Park contains one of the world's most spectacular driving route. Kejimkujik National Park is a true jewel for outdoor friends. Explore the many lakes and islands on a canoe tour and camp on uninhabited islands. White sandy beaches can be found on the eastern shore. Visit world famous Peggy's Cove lighthouse, a remnant of early days. Enjoy the world's highest tides on the Bay of Fundy. Golfers will fall in love with this province as they will find some of the most beautiful and challenging courses, such as the Highland Links course in Cape Breton or Digby Pines in Digby.
Nova Scotia in Figures
The province of Nova Scotia covers an area of 55,000 sq km. The mainland part of the province is connected to New Brunswick and the remainder of Canada by the 28 km Isthmus of Chignecto. Cape Breton Island is joined to the mainland by the Canso Causeway. Halifax, the capital city is located south of Paris. The coastline stretches for 7,400 km, but the overall length of the province is only 575 km, while the average width is 130 km.

Things to Do in Nova Scotia
FACTS ABOUT NOVA SCOTIA Nova Scotia is one of 10 provinces (and three territories) in Canada.
It lies on the east coast of the country and is almost completely surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean. Believe it or not, millions of years ago Nova Scotia was actually part of Africa. When the earth's crust shifted and Africa and North America separated, Nova Scotia got left behind.
One big part of Nova Scotia is actually a huge island, called Cape Breton Island.
Our neighbouring Canadian provinces are New Brunswick (which is bigger) and Prince Edward Island (which is smaller). Together, we are often called the Maritime provinces of Canada.
The nearest American state is Maine. It takes about four hours to drive from Nova Scotia through New Brunswick to the Maine border.
Most of the province is covered with forests and lakes and most larger towns are along the seacoast.

Canada's Ocean Playground
When you are in Nova Scotia everything is a reminder about how the sea influences the province and it's people. Although not an Island, Nova Scotia is surrounded by the Atlantic Ocean with only 45km wide connection to the rest of Canada. Where ever you are in Nova Scotia, you are never further than 56km from the sea. Most of the province is covered in dense forest and gentle rolling hills. The Bay of Fundy on the west coast has the world's highest tides. Cape Breton in the north is a large island that accounts for about one fifth of the landmass in Nova Scotia. The mountains here are more rugged and reminiscent of the Scottish Highlands.

Canada's Ocean Playground
More Information About Nova Scotia They call it Canada's Ocean Playground, and it's no wonder why. The Atlantic Ocean plays a starring role in Nova Scotia's landscape, its economy and culture. Nova Scotia's only land connection to mainland Canada is via the Isthmus of Chignecto - a 27-kilometer wide strip of land that links the province to New Brunswick. The rest of Canada's second smallest province is surrounded by ocean. In fact, no one place is more than 55 km from ocean coast. Nova Scotia is famous for quaint seaside fishing villages and lighthouses like the one found at Peggy's Cove, perhaps Nova Scotia's most photographed landmark. Inland the topography is typical of the northern Appalachian Region with thick forest covering gently rolling hills of pre-historic rock. Ancient glaciers left their mark on Nova Scotia, scooping out many lakes and depositing boulders helter-skelter across the countryside (especially in southwestern Nova Scotia). Apple orchards, vineyards and other crops fill the Annapolis Valley, the province's agricultural center. The terrain becomes mountainous on Cape Breton Island making for stunning scenery along the Cabot Trail. Nova Scotia is known for damp and foggy conditions especially near the Atlantic coast. Summer temperatures in Halifax average 18º C in July and dip to an average -5º C in January.
