PRENTICE HALL LITERATURE: Timeless Voices, Timeless Themes
Yoshiko Uchida
The author of many books for readers of all ages, Yoshiko Uchida was especially noted for her graceful, inspiring celebration of Japanese culture and her Japanese American heritage. Uchida was born in 1921 in Alameda, California, and grew up in the nearby city of Berkeley. Uchida's parents were born in Japan and had immigrated to the United States some years before. Thus Yoshiko was a nisei The Dancing Kettle After attending local schools, Uchida enrolled at the University of California at Berkeley. As she was studying for her final exams on Sunday, December 7, 1941, news came over the radio that Japanese forces had attacked the United States naval base at Pearl Harbor in Hawaii. The United States immediately entered World War II against Japan and Germany. Less than three months later, the federal government issued an order requiring that Japanese Americans be evacuated from their homes and imprisoned indefinitely at "Wartime Relocation Agency (WRA) camps." This policy was known as internment. In early May 1942, the Uchida family was uprooted to a makeshift barracks surrounded by barbed wire at a racetrack. After five months there, they were sent to Topaz, a WRA camp in the Utah desert. Uchida later recorded in a number of works her family's experiences. In May 1943, she was released from Topaz in order to begin a graduate fellowship at Smith College in Massachusetts. Shortly afterwards, her parents were also released. 40 years later, in 1983, a government commission concluded that a "grave injustice" had been done to Japanese Americans, who were overwhelmingly loyal to their adopted land. The commission declared that the causes of internment were race prejudice, war hysteria, and a failure of political leadership.

Doug Caulkins, Professor of Anthropology
I was born and raised in the Black Hills of South Dakota, geologically an "island in the prairie." My anthropological research on the cultures of Norway, Wales, Scotland and England eventually led me to a study of immigrants who settled in Iowa. I wrote the chapter on Welsh-Americans in American Immigrant Cultures: Builders of a Nation (David Levinson and Melvin Ember, editors; Macmillan, 1997, pp.935-941). I am also writing a series of brief biographies of successful Welsh-Americans for an encyclopedia of notable immigrants. In addition to studying those who settled on the prairies, I am active in environmental conservation in central Iowa, where I own a farm. I helped establish an organization of Grinnell residents dedicated to the conservation and restoration of a large tract of Iowa woodland, grassland, and streams. ROBERT W. BARNES
Robert Barnes, a long recognized name in Maryland genealogy, comes to us from his native Baltimore County. Bob began researching Maryland families many years ago, and soon thereafter created a vast number of books as aides to those in their research of Maryland families. To date he has published numerous titles including: Maryland Marriages 1634-1777, Maryland Marriages 1778-1800, and Maryland Marriages, 1801 to 1820, Baltimore County Families, 1659-1759 and several books of newspaper abstracts. His latest work, British Roots of Maryland Families , contains information on nearly 500 individuals and families whose descendants came to Maryland. He identifies 493 families of British origin. He is currently finishing Volume 2 of British Roots of Maryland Families. After retiring as Head of the Social Studies Department of Thurgood Marshall Middle School in Baltimore City, he assumed positions as writer for Family Line Publications and then as Reference Archivist for the Maryland State Archives, and greatly expanded his work as a professional genealogist. Bob has provided service and leadership to the Maryland Genealogical Society (President in 1964) and Baltimore County Genealogical Society (serving as President, Editor and in other roles).

American Labor Leader and Social Activist
2000 Hispanic Heritage Award Winner "I think we brought to the world, the United States anyway, the whole idea of boycotting as a nonviolent tactic. I think we showed the world that nonviolence can work to make social change." Dolores Huerta is the most prominent Chicana (Mexican American woman) labor leader in the United States. She is cofounder and first vice president of the United Farm Workers union. For more than thirty years she has dedicated her life to the struggle for justice and dignity for migrant farm workers. Honored with countless community service, labor, Hispanic, and women's awards, Huerta is a role model for Mexican American women. Dolores Fernandez Huerta was born in 1930 in the small mining town of Dawson in northern New Mexico. She was the second child and only daughter of Juan Fernandez and Alicia Chaves Fernandez. Her mother's parents had been born in New Mexico, while her father's parents had immigrated to America from Mexico. When Huerta was a toddler her parents divorced, and she moved to California with her mother and two brothers. Active Childhood As a single parent during the Great Depression (a severe economic slowdown in America during the 1930s), Alicia Chaves Fernandez had a difficult time supporting her young family. While she worked at a cannery at night and as a waitress during the day, her father helped watch the children. The young Huerta enjoyed a close relationship with her grandfather. "My grandfather used to call me seven tongues," she related to Margaret Rose in

About the List and Criteria for Selection
The books that appear in this annotated book list were evaluated and selected by a Book Review Committee appointed by National Council for the Social Studies (NCSS) and assembled in cooperation with the Children's Book Council (CBC). NCSS and CBC have cooperated on this annual bibliography since 1972. Books selected for this bibliography were published in 1998 and are written primarily for children in grades K-8. The selection committee looks for books that emphasize human relations, represent a diversity of groups and are sensitive to a broad range of cultural experiences, present an original theme or a fresh slant on a traditional topic, are easily readable and of high literary quality, and have a pleasing format and, when appropriate, illustrations that enrich the text. Each book is read by several reviewers, and books are included on the list by committee assent; annotations do not necessarily reflect the judgment of the entire committee.

Overview
(When I first wrote this, Caesar was still alive. He died in December of 1996.)
Irving is alive and well today (1996), 101 years old on July 4, 1996 Irving is a typical 'Tin Pan Alley' type of composer, writing songs to order. If you have the money, he'll write the song, and it's always a good one. (Irving once remarked that he did not always write 'good', but he always wrote fast.) His songwriting career spans the 1920's to the 1940's. He was the lyricist for the 1924 Broadway musical, 'No, No, Nanette'. The son of Morris and Sofia Selinger Caesar, Irving was born on the 4th of July, in the Henry Street Settlement on New York's lower East Side of Manhattan. His father ran a neighborhood second-hand bookstore. Irving has said that he was just 6 years old when he composed his first poem:
