The course is to give foreign students who plan to study at Norwegian colleges and universities the knowledge of Norwegian language and civilisation and skills necessary to study in Norway and to help students adapt to living in Norway. Competence
Successful completion of this course fulfills Norwgian language requirements for admissions to Norwegian colleges and universities. Further the programme qualifies, by application, as a year concentration toward a Norwegian degree. It will enable students to read and understand contemporary texts (fiction, non-fiction), understand lectures in Norwegian within their own professional field, talk about everyday matters and professional topics, speak and write communicative, idiomatic Norwegian. In addition students will gain the general insights they need for pursuing their individual, professional studies in Norway; and will be informed about the structures of Norwegian society and the way Norwegians live. Requirements for admission
General admissions requirements for Norwegian colleges and universities or equivalent apply. Applicants 25 years of age and over may apply for admission on an individual basis dependent on relevant work experience. English as required. No Norwegian language requirement.

Text: The concentration is text linguistics and pragmatics. Students will gain insight into text theory and how texts are structured. A selection of texts (25 pages) will be determined from a variety of genres.

It is spoken by about 4 million people in Norway and another million in the other Scandinavian countries and North America. Norwegian is a daughter language of Old Norse (see Germanic languages Norse language). Today there are two official forms of Norwegian: bokmal [book language] and nynorsk [new Norwegian]. Bokmal, also called riksmal bokmal came to differ greatly from the Norwegian spoken by the common people. Since 1905, however, orthographical and grammatical reforms by the government have brought bokmal closer to the popular form of Norwegian. Nynorsk, also known as landsmal [country language], stems from the native Norwegian dialects that evolved from Old Norse (uninfluenced by Danish), and it is therefore very different from
