My present research project is a study of spoken Norwegian dialects in the area around the two small towns Coon Valley and Westby in Vernon County, Wisconsin. This area was settled by Norwegians around 1850, and the Norwegian language is still used, especially by the older generation. This project was started in 1992, when I spent the fall semester doing fieldwork, and hopefully it will be completed some day.... My first study within this field was on the Trønder dialects in Minnesota, North and South Dakota. The fieldwork for this project was done in 1986-87, when I spent months on the road looking for Americans speaking the dialects from the Norwegian communities Verdal, Stjørdal and Meråker in Nord-Trøndelag. This study was completed in 1990.

The Norwegian alphabet consists of 29 letters, the first 26 or which are the same as the Latin alphabet used in English . The three last letters are and . In addition to the 29 official letters, there are several diacritical signs in use (somewhat more in Nynorsk than Bokmål ): à ä ç é è ê ñ ó ò ô ü. The diacritical signs are not compulsory, but may alter the meaning of the word dramatically, e.g.: for (for), fór (have gone), fòr (meadow) and fôr (fodder).

Study of Norwegian
Dr. Gro Harlem Brundtland with Norwegian Students The study of Norwegian opens the door to another culture and another way of viewing the world and develops skills in communication, research, analytical thinking, and writing that are essential in a wide range of careers. Former students report time and again that a knowledge of Norwegian is a rare and appealing skill that gives them an edge over other graduates. Some of the world's best literature awaits discovery by students of Norwegian: works by authors like Ibsen, Hamsun, and Undset, as well as by writers who have not been translated into English. Norwegian also enables many students to explore their cultural heritage, and encourages contact with relatives and friends in Norway.

NORWEGIAN TEACHERS:
Norwegian language may be threatened by SMS
Carin Pettersson Text messages sent on cell phones have become a popular way of communicating, particularly among youth, but teachers claim the Norwegian language is suffering. Foto: PÃ¥l Nisja Everything has its price. About 50 percent of all Norwegian teachers, who participated in the survey regarding the cell phones influence in the school, stated that the text message language is threatening the Norwegian language, reported the Norwegian paper Dagsavisen. The survey was conducted by Berit Skog, sociologist, and she claims that this may be one of the reasons why teachers state that text messages are destroying the Norwegian language. In average, Norwegian students send between six and ten SMS messages every day. One of three teachers wants a total ban on cell phones at school.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Norwegian is a Germanic language The Germanic languages form one of the branches of the Indo-European (IE) language family, spoken by the Germanic peoples who were settled north along the borders of the Roman Empire. It is characterised by a number of unique linguistic features, most famously the consonant change known as Grimm's law.
Writing
Some early Germanic languages developed runic alphabets of their own, but use of these alphabets was comparatively limited. East Germanic languages were written in the Gothic alphabet developed by Bishop Ulfilas for his translation of the Bible into Gothic. Later, Christian priests and monks who spoke and read Latin in addition to their native Germanic tongue began writing the Germanic languages with slightly modified Latin letters.

The nearby island territories of Svalbard and Jan Mayen are under Norwegian sovereignty and are considered by Norway as part of the kingdom, while Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic Ocean and Peter I Island in the South Pacific Ocean are Norwegian dependencies and not considered part of the kingdom. Additionally, Norway has a claim for Dronning Maud Land in Antarctica.
