Norway: small country with two written languages
Essential background material for students of Norwegian. From the source: "it is hard for foreigners to comprehend why Norwegians, who 150 years ago did not have a written language of their own and managed quite well with Danish, have, over the past 100 years, developed for good measure two Norwegian tongues. The purpose of this article is to attempt to explain this paradoxical situation." The Norwegian Language Council is the Norwegian government's advisory body in matters pertaining to the Norwegian language.

THE NORWEGIAN NATIONAL LANGUAGE a brief historical survey
Ingar Holst
Overview S INCE 1938 THE NATIONAL NORWEGIAN LANGUAGE has been banned. It is strictly forbidden to teach it in the government-run schools and universities (and since the private schools may be counted on one hand, and since they will have their permission to teach withdrawn if they teach the National Language anyway, that leak is effectively plugged); it is strictly forbidden to use it as a civil servant, it is strictly forbidden to speak it in the government-owned national broadcasting NRK (nation-wide broadcasts outside NRK were likewise effectively forbidden until the early eighties as for radio and until the early nineties as for television) and it is strictly forbidden to write it if the dispatcher is any government-run institution. The National Language, its culture and literature, is consequently muted to the generations growing up. courtesy King Features Syndicate In 1995, Nancy Aarsvold , a Norwegian instructor at Augsburg College, and Louis Janus of the University of Minnesota created an email-based introduction to the Norwegian language which they called NorWord. The idea was to introduce a Norwegian phrase every day, with examples of usage and related words and phrases. NorWord ran from April through November 1995. In all, 160 lessons were sent. These were archived on a public Gopher server, but that server was shut down in 1999. Fortunately, I had a copy of the NorWord lessons on my computer. I split the archive files into separate daily lessons and set up a server to send one lesson every day. At first, I only sent the lessons to myself, but later I began sending them to others who requested them, with the permission of the authors. Now you can receive these lessons too, at no cost. The "course" takes about 6 months with lessons every weekday and extra materials on the weekends. To view sample lessons near the beginning and end of the series, click on these links:

The "parent language" of Norwegian is, as noted, customarily called Old Norse, a term which includes both Old Norwegian in a narrow sense (the language of Norway) and Old Icelandic. The chronology traditionally used for the Norwegian language is:
In histories of the Norwegian language, this chronology is usually motivated on structural grounds: Old Norse is the synthetic medieval language which we find in the manuscripts of the time, Modern Norwegian represents the analytic stage reached by the Norwegian dialects (supposedly) in the sixteenth century, but not expressed in writing before the codification of written standard Nynorsk around 1850. Middle Norwegian, then, represents a short transitional stage, as indicated by an unstable and fluctuating written language under increasing pressure from Danish. Danish was the only written language employed in Norway from this time until the second half of the nineteenth century. In speech, Norwegian dialects were used, but in the cities, a Danish-based upper- class spoken variety gradually arose, especially for formal use, but it also strongly influenced everyday language. This variety was actually based on spelling pronunciation: phonetically North Scandinavian, but on all other levels Danish. In fact, it corresponded closer to the Danish orthography than ordinary spoken Danish did, since this orthography was (and is) very conservative, reflecting medieval more than modern Danish pronunciation.

    About Norwegian
There are approximately 4 million speakers of the Norwegian language. Norwegian consists of two distinct dialects, bokmål and nynorsk. Both are part of the Scandinavian language family of the Germanic branch of Indo-European languages, and both have equal status in Norway. Bokmål (literally "book language") is used primarily in the cities. Most newspapers and television and radio broadcasts are in bokmål, which is closely related to Danish. Nynorsk is a dialect that was formed in the mid-1800s from the rural dialects of Norwegian, in a conscious effort to separate the Norwegian language from Danish. It is believed that the two languages will eventually merge, although recent attempts to make that happen have failed.
Norwegian, Swedish, and Danish are linguistically very closely related and are generally mutually intelligible. This is due to the way the national boundaries have been in flux throughout Scandinavian history. Norway and Denmark were a single country for four centuries, until 1814. And after they split apart, Norway was under the rule of the Swedish crown until 1905. The movement for the recognition of a Norwegian language separate from Danish and Swedish led to the consequent formation of nynorsk.
