Images and random information from outdoor Norway Norway is a small country in the northernmost part of Europe having a long coast towards the Atlantic Ocean. The population density is only 14 persons per square kilometer (37 per square mile), so we are blessed with ample wilderness suitable for recreation. A large fraction of the country is more or less barren highlands. Plains, hills, and rounded mountain peaks are common in the eastern parts of the country, while high and often jagged mountains and narrow valleys and fjords are typical of the coastal parts. The Winter Olympics
The move toward a winter version of the Olympics began in 1908 when figure skating made an appearance at the Summer Games in London. Ten-time world champion Ulrich Salchow of Sweden, who originated the backwards, one revolution jump that bears his name, and Madge Syers of Britain were the first singles champions. Germans Anna Hubler and Heinrich Berger won the pairs competition. The Games resumed in 1920 at Antwerp, Belgium, where figure skating returned and ice hockey was added as a medal event. Sweden's Gillis Grafstrom and Magda Julin took individual honors, while Ludovika and Walter Jakobsson were the top pair. In hockey, Canada won the gold medal with the United States second and Czechoslovakia third. Seventy years after those first cold weather Games, the 17th edition of the Winter Olympics took place in Lillehammer, Norway, in 1994. The event ended the four-year Olympic cycle of staging both Winter and Summer Games in the same year and began a new schedule that calls for the two Games to alternate every two years.

    The Sami of Norway
    Elina Helander
An ethnic minority and a separate people, but Norwegian citizens too. This is how Norway officially defines the country's Sami ethnic minority. But this has not always been the case. Since 1980, the legal status of the Sami, the native inhabitants of Norway, has been considerably improved. This change in attitude is reflected in an Article in the Norwegian Constitution which the national assembly, the Storting, ratified in 1988. It reads as follows: It is the responsibility of the authorities of the State to create conditions enabling the Sami people to preserve and develop its language, culture and way of life. The Sami Act sets out the main guidelines for the Sami Parliament (Sameting), which was officially opened in 1989. The Parliament's sphere of operations and other current Sami issues are described in this article, which has its starting point in early history. The Sami are an indigenous people who form an ethnic minority in Norway, Sweden and Finland. There is also a small population on Russia's Kola peninsula. In more recent history, i.e. from about the sixteenth century, Sami have inhabited nearly all the areas of the Nordic countries where they now have permanent settlements. The Sami region extends from Idre, in Dalarne, Sweden, and adjacent areas in Norway south to Engerdal in Hedmark County. To the north and east it stretches to Utsjoki in Finland, Varanger in Norway and on to the Kola peninsula in Russia.

Another extensive travelogue from a six day motorcycle tour of southern Norway, taking you to places like picturesque little towns such as Lom and Sogndal and the big coastal city of Bergen. A full day was spent on hiking/climbing to Galdhopiggen - the highest mountain peak of northern Europe.
We return to Norway yet again for our shortest trip so far. In this four day trip we decide to revisit an old favorite: Lysebotn.

    Norway wolf hunt sparks anger
Sweden says 200 wolves twice the current number are needed to sustain the species OSLO, Norway (CNN) A wolf hunt has been approved by authorities in Norway despite objections from wildlife campaigners. Their decision was made after pressure from farmers who are losing flocks of sheep to the pack of wolves. Approval has only been secured to kill nine wolves in southern Norway, but strong protests have still been lodged by Swedish and international environmental officials. "This decision is very unfortunate", said World Wildlife Foundation (WWF) spokesman Lennart Nymann. "With it, Norway is eliminating 10 percent of the Scandinavian wolf population". The Norwegian authorities say the proposed hunt, which could be conducted from helicopters, is a compromise after it first proposed to kill 20 wolves. Now they have more than halved the amount and limited it to one family group in Østerdalen, a valley on the Norwegian-Swedish border. Oslo has also set aside funds for the hunt, scheduled to start on February 10.
