Travel to Norway - the country in Northern Europe with the breathtaking coastline
Norway is a long, narrow country on the northwestern edge of the European continent. The northern third of Norway lies above the Arctic Circle and is called the land of the Midnight Sun. Because this region is so far north, Norway, along with Denmark and Sweden, is one of the Scandinavian countries. Vikings lived in all three Countries about a thousand years ago. Vikings from Norway sailed west and established colonies in Iceland and Creenland. About A.D. 1 000, Leif Ericson sailed from Creenland and headed what was the first European expedition to the mainland of America. Norway is mostly a high, mountainous plateau covered by bare rock, and it has a relatively small amount of farmland. But the rivers that rush down from the mountains provide much cheap electricity. Norway generates more hydroelectric power per person than any other country. Norwegian manufacturing is based on this cheap power. Important products of Norway include chemicals, metals, petroleum, processed foods, and wood pulp and paper. Norway is one of Europes largest producer of petroleum due to its massive oil reserves. Which has made Norwegians one of the richest people in the world.

During the 19th century leprosy was a serious health problem in Norway, especially in some western, rural districts. In 1856 it was decided that all leprous patients should be examined by the local doctor (District Health Officer), and registered in a national leprosy register. The patients' family relationships received special attention. Some patients tried to avoid registration, fearing that the data might be misused. After Armauer Hansen (1841-1912) discovered in 1873 that leprosy was an infectious disease, isolation of leprous patients was enforced. In 1884 Thomas Collett (1835-1898), the local doctor in a rural district of western Norway, carried out a survey of all leprous patients registered in his district, a total of 164 patients. The data from his survey provide convincing support for the view that hereditary factors play an important role in the development of the disease. Modern research has confirmed that an important gene controls the susceptibility to leprosy.

L ong before the Swedish, Finnish or even the Viking culture had developed, the Scandinavian peninsula was populated by the Saemieh (hereafter referred to as Sami). The oldest written source of knowledge on the Sami's is the Roman historian Tacitus' who describes fenni in a book from 98 A.D, although his account most certainly was based on hearsay only.
In 555 A.D. the Greek historian, Procopius, refers to Scandinavia as Thule , and the inhabitants he calls skridfinns . At this time the most southern part of Sweden was populated by the Vendel people a peaceful group of sunworshippers. Since they lived in a time before recorded history for this part of the world, little is known today about the Vendel's. Later the immigration by and mixing with germanic tribes gave birth to the wellknown Viking culture in Sweden and Norway. D uring the Viking Age -and later- in the Middle Ages, Sweden was only about a third of it's present size, the northern 2/3 of the country was populated by the Sami. Even though the Sami tales about the Stalo suggests that there was a long-lasting conflict with the Vikings. The Sami's also traded first with Vikings and later with travelers from northern Europe such as tradesmen from the Hanseatic league.

Historical Background
As far back as in the year 1000, the Norwegian king, Olav den Hellige, forbade everyone who was not Christian to live in Norway but only in the time of king Christian IV (late 16th century) do we find specific references to the Jews. The Jews in question were mainly those who in and 1498 were driven out of Spain and Portugal . These Sephardi Aschkenazi-Jews ," from Eastern-, Central- and part of Western Europe. King Christian IV's successor, King Fredrik III, was not as liberal as his predecessor and during his time the Jews in the area once again lived under strict conditions. They were not allowed to be in the Danish-Norwegian kingdom without a form of visa . In 1687, when Norway was united with Denmark under King Christian V's law, the prohibition of Jews entering the country was reinserted. There was a fine for anyone who broke this law and a reward for the person who informed against a Jew. About 150 years later, in 1830, the attitude towards Jews was somewhat more lenient and by 1844 the Justice Department decided that "Portuguese-Jews" would be permitted to enter freely.

HOME GEIR'S SCHEDULE WHERE TO BUY GUEST BOOK ... Customer Service Items in Your Cart: Current Subtotal: History The land called Norway was once part of the Viking realm. For more than 250 years Norwegian Vikings plundered and pillaged as far south as Moorish-controlled Spain. About AD 900, Viking leader Harald Fairhair brought together the various small, isolated tribes of Norway; his sons continued to rule after him. They also attempted to convert the pagan population to Christianity, the religion of Viking-controlled England, but were met with great resistance. During this period Norwegian Vikings sailed west across the Atlantic, establishing settlements in Greenland and North America.
The next Norwegian king to try to force his subjects to accept Christianity was Olav Haralsson, and his efforts were only slightly more successful than Harald's; he is credited with converting the fledgling nation to Christianity in about 1000. In 1066 an army of invading Norwegian Vikings were defeated in England, bringing the Viking era to a close.
A period of economic prosperity ensued, marred by civil war between competing factions of nobles. In 1349 the bubonic plague killed two-thirds of ithe country's population. For the next 400 years Norway was ruled by Denmark, and its power and influence as a Scandinavian nation were reduced dramatically. With the defeat of Napoleonic France, with whom the Danes had aligned themselves, Denmark was forced to concede Norway to Sweden. Norway balked at yet another form of hegemony, but Sweden sent in troops to control the rebellion.

http://www.katolsk.no/www/about_en.htm
The history of the Catholic Church in Norway
The history of the Catholic Church in Norway is as old as the kingdom itself, going back till about 900 A.D., with Christian monarchs from 930. The country was finally converted after the death of the king Saint Olav (+ 1030). The Christianisation was largely the work of Anglo-Saxon missionaries, and the Norwegian Church has been considered the only daughter of the English. Cardinal Nicolas Breakspear established Church province in 1153; the archbishop resided in Nidaros (Trondheim). The prosperous years of the High Middle Ages were followed by decline for Church and nation alike, although Norwegian Catolicism retained much of its vitality. The people were unprepared for the Lutheran Reformation imposed by the Danish king in 1537. In spite of severe punishment for Catholic practices, the faith survived in parts of the country till about 1700. Christiania (Oslo) had an illegal but tolerated Catholic congregation for a couple of years in the 1790s. The first parish after the Reformation was established in the capital in 1843; a few years later Catholic places of worship were opened in Alta (Finnmark), Tromsø and Bergen. Most Norwegian Catholics have a foreign background; this partly explains the once popular prejudice that Catholicism is something alien. Religious sisters working in hospitals and schools did much to overcome anticatholicism; Catholic authors, e.g. Sigrid Undset and Hallvard Rieber-Mohn O.P., also contributed to this. Protestants and Catholics were brought closer together in firm opposition to the Quisling regime during the German occupation (1940-45).

69. Sons Of Norway - About Us

A Brief History of Sons of Norway
By Hildegarde M. Strom Professor C. Sverre Norborg begins his fine history of Sons of Norway, An American Saga, with this descriptive paragraph: "The founders of Sons of Norway were Americans. They had crossed the wide Atlantic in search of greater opportunities for themselves and their families. From the day they passed through the immigration gates at Ellis Island, they knew that their lives and fortunes were linked forever with this vast and free land." This is the strong thread which runs through much of the Sons of Norway story: a love for the land of their birth but at the same time a fierce loyalty to their new land. The history of Sons of Norway could be described as one of steady and deliberate progress. By the 1870s, Minneapolis had a very active nucleus of Norwegian emigrants, many of whom had come from the Trondheim area to form a colony in the northern part of the city. From that group came the 18 founders who signed on as charter members of Sons of Norway. Interestingly enough, it was a woman who was at the center of all of the activity prior to this forming. Ingeborg Levorsdatter Langeberg was the first permanent Norwegian resident of Minnesota, coming here as a maid in the home of Territorial Governor Alexander Ramsey. She subsequently met and married a well-to-do farmer from a northern suburb of Minneapolis. When her husband died, she became a wealthy widow whose home was a friendly center for all newcomers, one of whom was Ole Draxten. He was the first Norwegian to build a house in the area and it was his son Bersvend who was later to become the first Supreme President of Sons of Norway.

Royalty in Norway
Norway's first king, Harald I also known as Harald Fairhair was born in the ninth century. His father, Halfdan the Black, ruler of Westfold (or Vestfold) in southeast Norway, was descended from Sweden 's royal Yngling family. When Harald was 10, his father died and Harald succeeded him as king. Before he reached his mid-20s, Harald had defeated rival kings in battle and united Norway under his rule. After the death of King Haakon V in 1319, the Norwegian crown passed to his grandson Magnus, who was also king of Sweden. In 1397, Denmark , Norway, and Sweden formed the Kalmar Union under Margaret I, a Danish princess who had married King Magnus's son Haakon VI. Although her nephew Eric of Pomerania was the official king of all three countries, it was Margaret who ruled them until her death in 1412. Sweden left the Kalmar Union in 1523 and elected its own king, but Norway remained united with Denmark until 1814, when Denmark ceded Norway to Sweden. In 1905, Norway became independent from Sweden. Its new government offered the crown to Prince Carl, second son of Denmark's future King Frederick VIII. After being approved in a popular vote by the Norwegian people, the prince ascended the throne as King Haakon VII. Norway remained neutral in the First World War, but was invaded by Germany during World War II. Haakon VII fled to England, where he remained in exile for exactly five years. He received a warm welcome when he returned to Norway in 1945.

Norway Spring
Norway Spring In 1878 a sawmill was erected here as the first industry in the Norway - Vulcan area. John O'Callaghan was owner of this mill which supplied early mining number needs until 1902. This spring was caused by a 1094 foot hole which was drilled in 1903 by the Oliver Mining Company in search of iron ore. The hole cuts several steeply dipping porous strata that trap water at the higher elevations to the north. The difference in elevation causes pressure: this pressure is released by the drilled hole demonstrating the principle of the artesian well. On the slope to the north are the obscure workings of the Few and Munro mines, operated in 1903-1922, now owned by the Ford Motor Company.

FROM LOCAL ASSEMBLY TO NATIONAL ASSEMBLY
The Storting , Norway's national assembly, was constituted at Eidsvoll in 1814, but its roots are far older. Even before recorded history began in Scandinavia (around 800 AD), free men met in allting (common assembly) in the various districts scattered around the country, where they discussed legal, and to some extent, political matters of general concern. Later, during the Middle Ages, these tings, or assemblies, evolved into the local assemblies of rural districts and towns, and they acquired important functions in relations between the king and the common people. Moreover, it was at specific regional assemblies that a pretender to the throne was customarily acclaimed and "taken" as king.
Photo: Jiri Havran When Norway was united as a kingdom (900 - 1030 AD), the first lagtings were constituted as superior regional assemblies. These were representative assemblies at which delegates from the various districts in each region met to award legal judgments and pass laws.
