Norway - History, Culture and Travel
In this section of my site, I have collected information about my home country, Norway. This section does not have very much to do with guitar. But playing guitar should not prevent all you out there from having some interest in this country up in the far north. In no other country can you get this close to the Pole, and still have temperatures that can give acceptable living conditions. Compare the location of Norway with places in America, and you will see that Oslo is as far north as Anchorage, and North Cape is further north than you can get in Alaska. If you want to experience the midnight sun without leaving the civilisation, you have to go to Norway. Bear in mind that this site is primarily a guitar site. I have no ambitions as to develop this section of the site in the same way as the guitar site. Norway - Music
There is only one Norwegian composer who is really well known world wide: Edvard Grieg . But there are of course more. If you want to be ut to date with all kind of contemporary music in Norway, the Music Information Centre Norway is the place to start. Norway has three contemporary musicians that are well established among the world's elite musicians. They are the classical players Leif Ove Andsnes (piano) and (cello) . And then there is the jazz saxophonist Jan Garbarek . I will also mention the late soprano singer Kirsten Flagstad , who probably was the best Wagner-soprano of all time. The Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra is well established as an orchestra of high international standard. The current position of Oslo PO is a result of the 23 year long cooperation with their former musical director, Mariss Jansons . We hope that the new musical director

... Europe /Norway NORWAY History and Government
History: The origin of the first inhabitants of Norway is uncertain, but it seems likely that they travelled north from central Europe. The known history of the country begins in the 9th century AD and is based on the Viking sagas, supported by archaeological evidence, and the explorations of Viking adventurers who colonised the Scottish islands, parts of the Scottish and Irish mainlands, Iceland and (for a while) Greenland. Norway itself was divided into a number of fiefdoms; the unification process began with King Harald Fairhair, who defeated the major northern tribes at the battle of Hafrsfjord (near Stavanger) in 872. Over the next two centuries, Christianity gradually spread into the country, supplanting traditional beliefs in Norse gods. By 1060, the country was unified. From 1200 onwards, the twin powers of church and crown took control of the whole country. The arrival of bubonic plague (The Black Death) in Norway in 1350 killed half the Norwegian population and drastically weakened the power of its institutions. The Norwegians and Swedes had already established a joint monarchical structure which lasted between 1319 and 1343. Following the ravages of the Black Death, Norway entered into a political union with Denmark in 1380 through intermarriage between the countries’ ruling families. The alliance, cemented by a formal treaty in 1450, was intended to be one of equals; in practice, Denmark was the dominant partner, and in 1536, Norway became formally subservient to the Danish crown. Thus, when the 17th-century rivalry between Denmark and Sweden – the two dominant powers in the Baltic – broke out into warfare, the vanquished Danes handed over parts of Norwegian territory to Sweden.

    HISTORY
The Viking period (9th to 11th centuries) was one of national unification and expansion. The Norwegian royal line died out in 1387, and the country entered a period of union with Denmark. By 1586, Norway had become part of the Danish Kingdom. In 1814, as a result of the Napoleonic wars, Norway was separated from Denmark and combined with Sweden. The union persisted until 1905, when Sweden recognized Norwegian independence.

The history of Norway before the age of the Vikings is indistinct from that of the rest of Scandinavia. In the 9th cent. the country was still divided among the numerous petty kings of the fylker. Harold I , of the Yngling or Scilfing dynasty (which claimed descent from one of the old Norse gods), defeated the petty kings (c.900) and conquered the Shetlands and the Orkneys, but failed to establish permanent unity. Harold's campaigns drove many nobles and their followers to settle in Iceland and France. In the next two centuries Norsemen raided widely in W Europe and established the Norse duchy of Normandy. Harold himself concentrated on developing a dynasty; before he died (c.935) the country was divided among his sons, but one of them, Haakon I , defeated (c.935) his brothers and temporarily reunited the kingdom.

    http://www.heis.no/engelsk/eng_01b.htm
    The very beginning
The first elevator company in Norway was Wisbech, founded in 1891. Initially Wisbech co-operated with the Swedish Graham Brothers company (The two countries were in union at the time). Five years later they had their own shop producing elevators in Oslo, the capital. This booming decade to construction provided a strong foothold for Wisbech as the #1 company in Norway.
Up to the 1890's all elevator installations in Oslo were hydraulic, truly driven by the force of water pressure. 1897 marks a watershed (so to speak), from when elevators became driven by electric motors.
By 1934 there were 843 elevators running in Oslo, rising to 1896 in 1954, approx. 3800 (1974) and some 6400 (Oslo) and 25000 (country total) today.
Today the two corporations Schindler and Kone dominates the industry adding up to some two thirds of the gross marked of the industry estim. 1 bill. NOK = 160 mill US$ (turnover). The annual increase of units would average 1000 during the last decade, a decade that (except for the slump of 1988-93) has been the golden age of the building industry, thanks to the gross revenues of the national oil industry. Presently there are approx. 600 occupational constructors, of whom 98% are organized in the HMF.
During the years, the fact that the constructors have been the true caretakers of the trade - in most aspects - including public safety, has been proven over and over again.

King Harald had many children, and his heirs ruled Norway with short interruptions until 1319. By utilising their excellent boats and organisation they became master traders and warriors. Around 1200 the Norwegian king ruled over land from Man in the Irish Sea to the Kola Peninsula in the east. Religious influence from Europe (especially Ireland) led to the adoption of Christianity. Central in this was King Olav Haraldsson [Den Hellige] who died in the battle of Stiklestad. He was later canonised into Saint Olav. Kalmar Union
After being united under a single king and christened, Norway united with Denmark and Sweden in the Kalmar Union (1397-1523), which ended when Sweden seceded and Norway and its possessions quickly sank to the status of provinces under Denmark. Norway's power were further weakened by the fact that one third of the population died during the Black Death pandemic of 1349-1351. Many towns lost all their population and still remain empty today. Norway's provincial status lasted until 1814; this period is called "the-400-year-night".
