From the Ice Age to Modern times
People first settled in Norway about 10,000 years ago. They lived by hunting and fishing, before gradually starting to keep livestock and to cultivate the land. The first farms came into existence from about 500 B.C. This period is known as the Bronze Age since bronze was the metal used for weapons, jewellery and tools. The Iron Age which followed lasted until about 1000 A.D. and led to wider trade with other peoples and to better tools. The period from about 800 to 1000 A.D. is known as the Viking We regard Norway as a unified country from about the year 1030. In the 13th century Norway extended its rule to include Iceland, Greenland, the Faeroes and the Orkneys. Around 1350 the Black Death, a pestilent disease which swept across much of the world, struck Norway, wiping out more than half the population. From 1380 until 1814 Norway was in a union with Denmark and although the country during this time came to be regarded as part of Denmark, our forefathers managed to retain their national identity. This enabled them to draw up a Norwegian constitution when the union finally came to an end in 1814. In the same year, however, Norway entered into a new union, this time with Sweden. This union was peacefully terminated in 1905 and the Norwegians chose Prince Carl of Denmark to be their king. He took the name of Haakon VII and became the first king of an independent Norway for 525 years.

History
In the 13th century Oslo emerged as a centre of power. It continued to flourish until the mid-14th century when bubonic plague decimated its population. In 1397 Norway was absorbed into a union with Denmark which lasted over 400 years. Norway was ceded to Sweden in 1814. That same year a defiant Norway - fed up with forced unions - adopted its own constitution, but its struggle for independence was quelled by a Swedish invasion. In the end, Norwegians were allowed to keep their new constitution but were forced to accept the Swedish king. Growing nationalism eventually led to Norway's peaceful secession from Sweden in 1905. Norway stayed neutral during both world wars but was occupied by the Nazis in 1940. King HÂ¥kon set up a government in exile and placed most of Norway's huge merchant fleet under the command of the Allies. An active Resistance movement fought tenaciously against the Nazis, who responded by razing nearly every town and village in northern Norway during their retreat. The royal family returned at the end of the war. In 1960 Norway joined the European Free Trade Association but has been reluctant to forge closer bonds with other nations, partly due to concerns about its ability to preserve small-scale farming and fishing. North Sea oil and natural gas finds brought prosperity to the country in the 1970s, as left-wing governments over two decades fostered increased central planning, economic controls, socialised medecine, state-sponsored higher education, and what the government has liked to represent as the 'most egalitarian social democracy in western Europe'. Norway has since achieved one of the highest standards of living in the world.

The country's national identity is hard to separate from the Vikings or Norsemen who set out by sea to conquer the world - and met with a surprising degree of success. The Norse explorer Leif Eriksson may well have been the first European to visit North America, around AD 1000 (predating Columbus by about 500 years). It's thought that he landed in Newfoundland or New England and established a settlement known as Vinland. The Black Death reached Norway in 1349, killing an estimated two-thirds of the population and leaving the weakened nation easy prey for its powerful Scandinavian neighbors. For more than 500 years, Norway was governed by Denmark or Sweden, who treated it as a rustic, uncultured backwater. It was not until 1905 that the country finally gained its independence. This relatively recent transformation to nationhood helps explain the deep-rooted patriotism of most Norwegians. When Norway was overrun by Germany during World War II, resistance was fierce - everyone from schoolteachers to fishermen organized to fight against the occupation.

BASIC INFO. ECONOMY GEOGRAPHY ... NORWAY Norway traces its proud history to the Vikings, whose legendary seafaring skills took them to almost every place reachable by water. Before the year 1000, the norse had traveled on sea voyages as far as Greenland, which was colonized then. Christianity came relatively late (the beginning of the 11th century) and soon, Norway had achieved the apex of its power. In 1397, all the Scandinavian kingdoms were united under Danish control. At that point, Norway per se ceased to exist as an independent entity Danish rule would continue for another 400 years. During the early 19th century, Norway tried to reestablish its own sovereignty and in 1815, Sweden conceded an independent Norway in union with Sweden. This union scheme was never popular and in 1905 the Norwegian Storting pronounced the union over; the Swedish king was replaced with a prince of Denmark, who ruled Norway for over half a century as Haakon VII. Though Norway had been neutral during World War I, and tried to remain so during the Second World War, Germany invaded in 1940. A government-in-exile was established in London. Resistance to the collaborationist government of Vidkun Quisling was strong and with the Nazi exit in 1945, the King and his government-in-exile were returned victorious. Post war, Norway became an original member of the United Nations. A Norwegian, Trygve Lie, was the first Secretary General of the organization. It became a member of NATO and the European Free Trade Association. Though Norway provided its citizens with a model society in many ways, it also faced the burdensome economic consequences of such a society but has continued to enjoy, for the most part, enviable stability and prosperity.

History Norway's first settlers arrived over 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. These early hunters and gatherers followed the glaciers as they retreated north, pursuing migratory reindeer herds. The country's greatest impact on history was during the Viking Age, a period thought to have begun with the plundering of England's Lindisfarne monastery by Nordic pirates in 793 AD. Over the next century, the Vikings made raids throughout Europe, establishing settlements along the way. Viking leader Harald Fairhair unified Norway around 900 and King Olaf, adopting the religion of the lands he had conquered, converted the people to Christianity a century later.

The Early Years. In the early 1880's there was an exodus of immigrants from Europe to the New World, lured by the prospects of more space, cheaper more productive land and the chance to a better way of life. Many of these early comers located first in the United States or Eastern Canada. Meanwhile, the great North-West of Canada was being surveyed and opened up for homesteads and word of the wonderful opportunities to be found there were widely advertised and reached the ears of many in Minnesota, as well as elsewhere. The Mr. and Mrs. Ole M. Olstad family and four grown sons were one of these families that decided to pull up roots in Minnesota and head for the Northwest Territories. They made their way to the Duhamel settlement near the Battle River. Duhamel had been settled for some time but the Olstad family chose to settle several miles south of the Battle River and filed homesteads for themselves and for friends and relatives from the United States. The Naming of New Norway Most of the eligible adults availed themselves of homesteads as well as buying C.P.R. land which was available for $3.00 per acre and so the large family soon owned a considerable acreage in the surrounding country, and for a time the district was known as the "Olstad District". As other Norweigen families moved in as well families from other nationalities the name "New Norway was given to the little settlement which started about 1895 one mile east of the present townsite.

NORWAY HISTORY
Norway was incorporated in 1797 when Maine was part of Massachusetts. The town grew throughout the first half of the 19 th Century, due to its position as a trading center for the surrounding area. In the middle of that century, Norway commenced a steady 100-year expansion of farming, milling and manufacturing. Prosperous sawmills, textile mills, tanneries, saddle manufacturers and shoe factories operated in Norway during this period. Downtown grew to accommodate major retail and wealthy residential neighborhoods. A fire destroyed most of the eastern end of Maine Street in 1894. The great reconstruction that followed is a defining period in Norway’s history. Most of the rebuilt structures stand today as some of the best examples of period architecture in Maine. These buildings comprise Norway’s historic district. From the 1950’s to the present day, Norway’s traditional economy declined severely. All but one of the commercial dairy farms went out of business, and many of the historic factories and downtown stores moved away or closed altogether. The jobless rate remained near 10% for most of that period until only recently.

Norwegian history is often associated with the Viking Age, which lasted from AD 800-1000. During this period, Norwegian viking ships sailed to the Caspian Sea in the east and to Ireland in the west. They crossed the Atlantic Ocean to Greenland and North America, sailed through the Mediterranean to Constantinople (Istanbul) and founded colonies on Iceland, the Faeroes and the Shetlands, and in Normandy in France. During the following centuries, Christianity gained strength in Norway. The cities of Nidaros (now Trondheim), Oslo and Bergen were established as bishoprics and the power of the monarchy was consolidated up to 1380, when Norway was united with Denmark. Trade ties with Europe increased, particularly with northern Germany, and the Hanseatic merchants had a strong influence in Bergen. With the Reformation, the Roman Catholic Church lost its power and the Lutheran faith was introduced. In the period up to 1814, Norway lost its possessions in the West. Industries such as sawmills, herring fisheries and iron works developed, and the Nordic region was devastated by several wars. Under the Kiel Treaty of 1814, Denmark had to cede Norway to Sweden. Norway wrote its own Constitution on 17 May the same year but, after a brief war, was forced into union with Sweden. This union lasted until 1905, when Norway once again became an independent kingdom under King Haakon VII. The end of the 19th century saw the golden age of the Norwegian merchant fleet, the first railway between Oslo and Eidsvoll, which was built in 1854, and the beginning of the first great wave of immigration to North America. There was a transition from subsistence farming to commercial farming and Norway underwent comprehensive industrialisation and urbanisation, which led to important social reforms.

A Brief History of Troms
by Nils Johan Fosli, Oslo, Norway
Edited by Rosalie Sundin
The coast of Troms (the northwestern region of Norway) had a small Norwegian population a hundred years before the beginning of the era known as the Viking Age (ca. 1000 AD.) Just before 900 A.D., the Viking chief Ottar (Othere) visited the court of King Alfred the Great in England, where his words were recorded in writing. According to Ottar, he was the Norwegian that lived the farthest north of all others. Historians know Ottar was a wealthy man by the standards of his day, and an important source of his income was from the taxes paid to him by the Sami population in the far north. While the exact location of Ottar’s home is unidentified, it is known that he owned a farm in Troms.
The early Norwegian population in Troms were fishermen, whose livelihoods required them to live as close to the fishing grounds as possible. The land along the fjords were populated by the people known as "Sea Sami," who had seasonal camps throughout the area, and moved from one location to another. Hunting and fishing were the primary livelihoods of the Sea-Sami people.
In the 1700's the Norwegians living along the coast started to resettle along the fjords of Troms (Balsfjord, Lyngen, Nordreisa and Kvænangen.) These new Norsk settlers brought cows, sheep, goats and horses with them to their new settlements along the fjords, where most combined farming and fishing as their sources of income. For over 200 years, this combination of fishing and farming was the primary occupation of the Norwegian population in Troms. The existence of these new Norwegian settlements gradually forced the Sea-Sami to adjust their way of living; consequently they gave up their nomadic lifestyles and became farmers like their Norwegian counterparts.
