There is universal franchise for all citizens from the age of 18. Elections are held every other year, alternatively general elections to the Storting (The National Parliament) and local elections to the County and Municipal Councils. The Storting, which has 165 members, is elected for a four-year period. During that period it cannot be dissolved, nor can a new election be called, as is the case in many other countries. The Storting is divided into thirteen permanent committees, covering the various main fields of work. In addition to the Prime Minister, the Government comprises 18 ministers.

Norway's coalition government is giving too much consideration to the US in its Iraq policy, claims the head of the country's Labour Party. While Norwegian soldiers will be pulled out of Iraq as planned this summer, Labour is unhappy that officers will remain. Labour Party leader Jens Stoltenberg questions the government's motives for keeping Norwegian soldiers in Iraq.
