Where none have gone before:
The life of Roald Amundsen
It is 85 years since Roald Amundsen, on December 14th 1911, stood victorious at the South Pole. He had reached a goal that was the dream of many men. For the first time, human voices broke the awesome silence of the world's southernmost point. The achievement was to bring fame to Amundsen and his men. But in a letter, describing his reactions at that time, Amundsen openly confessed that "no man has ever stood at the spot so diametrically opposed to the object of his real desires", which for the ambitious Norwegian was the North Pole. For Amundsen a new goal always beckoned. He himself described his life as a "constant journey towards the final destination". By Linn Ryne Amundsen was born in 1872 at Borge, near the town of Sarpsborg, in southeast Norway. From boyhood days his life was singularly purposeful. No nagging doubts troubled his firm resolution. He wished to be a polar explorer. He devoured all the literature he could acquire on polar exploration, particularly the ill-fated journey of the British explorer, Sir John Franklin, who with the "Erebus" and the "Terror" set out to find the Northwest Passage in 1845, and never returned. Like Nansen he devoted a great deal of time to training and strengthening his physique to make his body a perfect instrument for the hazardous adventures he was determined to undertake. However, he was a dutiful son, and bowed to his mother's wish that he study medicine. But at the age of 21, when both his parents had died, Roald Amundsen sold his medical textbooks, packed away the cranium he had studied and announced his intention of becoming a polar explorer.

CSD Chair: -Now we must make a difference
Talks among over 80 government ministers have stressed the need to speed up efforts in delivering safe drinking water, basic sanitation and shelter for the poor. - For too many years we have had too little action. Now we must make a difference, CSD-Chair B¸rge Brende, said in his closing remarks to the UN Commission on Sustainable Development today. (30.04.04) Press Release
    CSD12 Summary
    (ENB, 03.05.04)
Reaching the targets on water and sanitation - difficult, but doable!
The water crisis is very much a governance crisis rather than a scarcity crisis. It is not water scarcity per se that defines whether a country and its citizens are short of water. Rather it is closely linked to wealth, writes B¸rge Brende, Chairman of CSD, and UNEP Executive Director, Klaus T¶pfer in this co-authored article. (30.04.04)
CSD-12 Chair Brende urges Governments to embark on a decade of implementation
Highlighting the need to speed up efforts in delivering safe drinking water, basic sanitation and shelter for the poor, Norwegian Minister of the Environment, B¸rge Brende, Chair of CSD-12, calls for a decade of implementation. Welcome to Government about Norway Administration Where We Are Council Who We Are ... Norway-email The City of Norway is a casual, North Country community which values outdoor activities, community events and a peaceful co-existence. With a population of some 3,000 residents, the community offers a progressive blend of small-town charm with convenient access to life's other necessities. With an eye always towards the future, the City of Norway has offered these benefits to its residents since 1889.
On a historical note, the first iron mine was established and named "The Norway Mine" by the president of the local mining company, a Scandinavian named J.J. Hagerman. The city developed from the mine's location. It is a subject of local debate whether the mine was named for the country of Hagerman's ancestors, or for the Norway Pine (red pine) which grows abundantly in the area. It is clear, however, that the City owes its name in some fashion to its Scandinavian heritage.

    Coalition takes over in Norway
Christian Democrat Kjell Magne Bondevik returns as Norway's prime minister OSLO, Norway A new centre-right coalition has taken over government in Norway promising large tax cuts. The coalition replaces Norway's Labour government, which resigned on Wednesday five weeks after its worst election defeat in nearly a century. Norwegians hope the new government with eight women among the 19 ministers will ease some of Europe's highest taxes on income, cars, alcohol and tobacco, while improving the services of the welfare state. The coalition's platform includes tax cuts, more privatisation, better welfare, health and education, and more spending of the vast surplus revenues Norway has as the world's second largest oil exporter. Lutheran clergyman and Christian Democrat Kjell Magne Bondevik officially took office on Friday after a meeting with King Harald V.

    GOVERNMENT
The functions of the King are mainly ceremonial, but he has influence as the symbol of national unity. Although the 1814 constitution grants important executive powers to the king, these are almost always exercised by the Council of Ministers in the name of the King (King's Council). The Council of Ministers consists of a prime ministerchosen by the political parties represented in the Stortingand other ministers.
The 165 members of the Storting are elected from 19 fylker (counties) for 4-year terms according to a complicated system of proportional representation. After elections, the Storting divides into two chambers, the Odelsting and the Lagting, which meet separately or jointly depending on the legislative issue under consideration.
The special High Court of the Realm hears impeachment cases; the regular courts include the Supreme Court (17 permanent judges and a president), courts of appeal, city and county courts, the labor court, and conciliation councils. Judges attached to regular courts are appointed by the King in council after nomination by the Ministry of Justice.
Each fylke is headed by a governor appointed by the King in council, with one governor exercising authority in both Oslo and the adjacent county of Akershus.

    (Photo: CBS/AP)
(AP) Norwegian Finance Minister Per-Kristian Foss has married his gay companion, becoming the first member of a Norwegian government to enter a binding homosexual partnership.
Under a 1993 law, gays and lesbians can enter legal partnerships with all the rights and obligations of marriage, except adoption and church weddings.
Foss, a Conservative, married long-term partner Jan Erik Knarbakk in a ceremony at the Norwegian Embassy in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Norwegian Finance Ministry confirmed the wedding, but said Foss was giving no interviews or comment because it was a personal matter.
"Yes, we entered a partnership at the embassy in Stockholm on Friday, Jan. 4," Foss told the Norwegian business newspaper Dagens Naeringsliv. "But beyond that, it is a private matter." Knarbakk is a top manager in the Schibsted publishing concern, and the two have been described in the news media as being among Norway's most powerful couples. Foss is a member of a three-party coalition government led by Lutheran clergyman Kjell Magne Bondevik of the Christian Democratic party, which opposes homosexual marriages.
