Print version Geography of Sweden Despite its small population and large area, Sweden is a technologically advanced country with good infrastructure, including an efficient transportation and communications system. Geographically speaking, it is characterized by its long coastlines, large forests and numerous lakes. Sweden is one of the countries on earth located furthest from the Equator. It extends from north to south at roughly the same latitude as Alaska or – in the Southern Hemisphere – the stretch of ocean between Cape Horn in South America and the Antarctic continent. In terms of area it is similar to Spain, Thailand or California. In population, it is in the same league as Belgium, Ecuador or New Jersey. A land of ancient bedrock, Sweden was settled later than most countries; yet its national government has relatively old roots. By the 16th century Sweden had evolved into a strongly centralized nation, with Stockholm as its capital. The size of the country has changed over the centuries: Finland was part of Sweden until 1809. What is now southern and western Sweden was conquered in 1658 from the then Danish-Norwegian union. During certain periods Sweden also had provinces on the southern and eastern shores of the Baltic Sea, and even colonies in North America and the West Indies. In 1905, a nearly century-old union with Norway was dissolved, but since 1812 Sweden's borders have been unchanged and the country has been spared from war since 1814.

Geography
Occupying the northern half of the North American continent, Canada's land mass is 9 093 507 square kilometers, making it the second-largest country in the world after Russia. From east to west, Canada encompasses six time zones. In addition to its coastlines on the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, Canada has a third sea coast on the Arctic Ocean, giving it the longest coastline of any country. To the south, Canada shares an 8 891 kilometre boundary with the United States. To the north, the Arctic islands come within 800 kilometres of the North Pole. Canada's neighbour across the Arctic Ocean is Russia. Because of the harsh northern climate, only 12 percent of the land is suitable for agriculture. Thus, most of the population of 30 million live within a few hundred kilometres of the southern border, where the climate is milder, in a long thin band stretching between the Atlantic and the Pacific oceans ... more
Mountain Ranges
Canada's terrain incorporates a number of mountain ranges: the Torngats, Appalachians and Laurentians in the east; the Rocky, Coastal and Mackenzie ranges in the west; and Mount St. Elias and the Pelly Mountains in the north. At 5 959 metres, Mount Logan in the Yukon is Canada's tallest peak.

Aims and Scope: The essential journal for Norwegian geographic research. Encompasses physical and human geography. Norsk Geografisk Tidsskrift - Norwegian Journal of Geography , published since 1926, is a continuation of Norsk Geografisk Aarbog (1889-1921) and is associated with the Norwegian Geographical Society. The journal reflects the many facets of geography and tries to take an all-round geographic view, both regionally and thematically, by striking a equal balance between physical and human geographic material. Primarily the journal aims at presenting Norwegian geographic research directed towards the problems and areas with and in which Norwegian researchers are working. In addition, the journal publishes articles by foreign authors, dealing with geographic themes based on studies in Norway or articles concerning geographic conditions of interest to Norwegian geographers.

Norway is a country of rich and diverse natural landscape that provides a fantastic setting for outdoor activities. It also offers excellent facilities for indoor sports. Enormous variation and undreamed of possibilities are the hallmarks of an active holiday in Norway. You can hike in untouched mountain areas, meeting almost no one, or join a group for a walk on a glacier. You can travel by horseback, bicycle, canoe or on foot. Sample nature's bounty by picking wild berries or mushrooms - or try your luck at fishing. Be tempted by the swirling clean water and choose from a wealth of different water activities. You may find it surprising that the Norwegian countryside is accessible to everyone, but the right of public access is guaranteed to everyone under Norwegian law. Giant Crab 'Red Army' Invades Norway James Owen
for National Geographic News March 9, 2004 First introduced to the Barents Sea off northern Russia in the 1960s, red king crabs (Paralithodes camtschaticus) are now spilling down western Norway by the millions. Some fear these massive crabs, native to Alaskan seas and the North Pacific, could reach as far south as Spain and Portugal, devouring almost everything in their path. Pulse of the Planet Some fishing communities in northern Norway say the crab, among the largest in the world, has already had a devastating impact. "The bloody things Hoover [vacuum] everything off the bottom of the sea, and all the fish are disappearing," one resident from the town of Kirkenes told the U.K.'s Daily Telegraph.
