DEAR EDUCATOR,
Do your standards of learning (SOLs) suggest that students compare other nations with the USA? Have you considered Norway? Here's what Tom Christensen and B. Guy Peters report in Structure, Culture, and Governance: A Comparison of Norway and the United States (Rowman and Littlefield, 1999). Both nations, they observe, are deeply committed to democracy. But Norwegians have an "historically rooted willingness to accept a strong ... redistributive role for the public sector," while Americans show "less willingness" to allow government "a significant role in steering society." Students using this unit can explore that comparison and other aspects of life in Norway — literally, one of the world's most "giving" nations. CURRICULUM STANDARDS
This unit will serve courses in history, world regions, government, and contemporary issues (9-12). Among prototypical SOLs supported by the unit are these three, cited from: Expectations of Excellence: Curriculum Standards for Social Studies (EE);

    Norway is one of the far northern places in the world where, in the summertime, the sun will not set at all! That means even at midnight , the sun will still shine in the sky!
    That is why Norway is called, "The Land of the Midnight Sun."
    The people of Norway have a special holiday in June, at "midsummer," to celebrate this special time.

EC Delegation Overview Latest update: March 2003 1. Political Context Norway’s relations with the EU are mainly governed by the Agreement on the European Economic Area (EEA) . The EEA Agreement is in force since 1.1.1994 and extends the Single Market legislation, with the exception of Agriculture and Fisheries, from the EU Member States to Norway, Iceland and Liechtenstein. At the top of the 2003 EU-Norway political agenda is the enlargement of the EEA Agreement to the future EU Member States. As a consequence of the EU enlargement, the new EU Member States will also have to become contracting parties to the EEA Agreement. This has to be negotiated with the EEA EFTA countries. The EEA enlargement negotiations were launched on 9 January 2003, and the objective is to conclude these negotiations rapidly in order for the EU and the EEA enlargements to take place at the same time. Norway has an association agreement with EU concerning on the implementation, application and development of the Schengen acquis. Norway participates in the work of the Council through a Mixed Committee as of May 1999 and the operational parts of the Agreement were implemented in March 2001. Where is Durmstrang?
    Many people have suggested locations as diverse as Norway, Russia (especially Siberia), the Alps, Germany and Latvia for Durmstrang. Some members believe that Durmstrang was the primary wizarding school of the Austrian-Hungarian Empire. The following are arguments for and against each location:
    PRO: Krum describes the school as having extensive grounds where he flies a lot over the lakes and mountains.
    CON: Nowhere in Switzerland is far north enough for the shortness of days described at Durmstrang.
    PRO: Someone who grew up in southern Norway would think the night lengths in winter she was used to were perfectly normal, but someone who grew up in Bulgaria would think that even southern Norway's winter nights were depressingly long and that it was very cold.
    PRO and CON: The middle part of Norway is too warm, according to a member who grew up there. The very north, however, would be cold and deserted enough.
