http://woldhagen.org/woldhagen/norway/Nor_geo.htm
Our Norwegian Heritage Norway: Geography Overall Dimensions: From Northeast to Southwest, the length of Norway is approximately 1,100 miles. At the widest, the width is 267 miles. The coastline' length is almost impossible to measure as it is heavily indented with fjords and includes many islands. Norway covers an area slightly exceeding 125,000 square miles. Fjords: Fjords are ocean inlets that were caused by glacier movement. They often are deeper in their middle and upper reaches than at the ocean. The Oslo Fjord is on the southern coast of Norway. The Sogn Fjord on the west is Norways longest and deepest fjord and the Hardanger Fjord in the southwest is the second largest. Glaciers: There are probably over 1,500. glaciers in Norway today and they cover an area of over 1,000 square miles. These glaciers are NOT left over from the last ice-age but instead have mostly been formed in the last 2000 years with the size decreasing in the last century. Climate: Although it is essentially at the same latitude as Alaska, the Gulf Stream brings a warmer climate to Norway. This keeps the fjords from freezing, even in the Arctic Finnmark region. Even more important are the southerly air currents brought in above these warm waters, especially during the winter.

    Norway - Geography
By Ekaterina Zhdanova-Redman Norway is a kingdom in northern Europe. It occupies the western part of the Scandinavian Peninsula and shares borders with Sweden, Finland, and Russia. Norway has a very long coastline, pierced by fjordsdeep narrow bays, with majestic rocks towering at their sides. Also, about 50,000 islands lie along the Norwegian coast. Some of them are just rocky reefs sticking out from the sea. All these islands help protect Norway from very strong winds and storms coming from the Atlantic Ocean.
Norway is often called The Land of the Midnight Sun, because from the middle of May through the end of July the sun shines there at night as well as in the day. That phenomenon of the midnight sun is a characteristic of Arctic regions. And even though just about one third of Norway lies north of the Arctic Circle, nowhere in the countryeven the far southexperiences true darkness at night during that season.
About three-fifths of Norway is covered by mountains. Some of them are covered with snow, others with ice. Large amounts of permanent ice and snow formed in mountains or at the poles are called glaciers. Norway has some of the largest glaciers in Europe. People who lived in Norway thousands of years ago invented skiing to travel over the snow-covered land. Today, as you know, skiing is very popular, and people from all over the world visit Norway to ski on its famous glaciers.

    • The Norwegian language Norwegian is a Germanic language spoken in Norway. Norwegian is closely related to, and generally mutually intelligible with Swedish and Danish. It has a very elongated form and has an extensive coastline along the North Atlantic Ocean, where Norway's famous fjords are found. In addition to Sweden, it borders Russia and Finland. The nearby island territories of Svalbard and Jan Mayen are under Norwegian sovereignty and are considered by Norway as part of the kingdom, while Bouvet Island in the South Atlantic Ocean and Peter I Island in the South Pacific Ocean are Norwegian dependencies and not considered part of the kingdom. Additionally, Norway has a claim for Dronning Maud Land in Antarctica.
