To the North!: Five Swedish Poets of the Nineteenth Century Selected Poems of August Strindberg “Barton is, I think it is safe to say, the most respected historian concentrating on Scandinavian issues currently active in the United States and . . . [his] breadth of knowledge is on display in the current volume, which focuses on the political and cultural impact of the union between Sweden and Norway. Though Sweden was the politically dominant partner in the union, Barton argues convincingly that for much of the nineteenth century, the cultural influence was primarily in the other direction.” —Rochelle Wright, author of The Visible Wall: Jews and Other Ethnic Outsiders in Swedish Film “Barton does an excellent job drawing on material in Swedish, Norwegian, and English relating to the exchange of ideas between Sweden and Norway during the period of the Union [1814–1905]. He makes accessible to English-speaking readers a vast array of material in politics and culture and helps illuminate the complex relationship between Sweden and Norway in the nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. . . .

Norway - History, Culture and Travel
In this section of my site, I have collected information about my home country, Norway. This section does not have very much to do with guitar. But playing guitar should not prevent all you out there from having some interest in this country up in the far north. In no other country can you get this close to the Pole, and still have temperatures that can give acceptable living conditions. Compare the location of Norway with places in America, and you will see that Oslo is as far north as Anchorage, and North Cape is further north than you can get in Alaska. If you want to experience the midnight sun without leaving the civilisation, you have to go to Norway. Bear in mind that this site is primarily a guitar site. I have no ambitions as to develop this section of the site in the same way as the guitar site. Infrastructure of Norwegian Musical Life
A number of public institutions interact with the Norwegian music sector. The Ministry of Culture and Church Affairs has overall sectoral responsibility, while the Ministry of Education and Research, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs (Cultural Relations Division), and the Norwegian Council for Cultural Affairs also have vital roles to play. The Ministry of Trade and Industry and the Norwegian Trade Council provide important support for the export-oriented aspects of Norwegian music.
The Norwegian music sector is divided into various levels that receive different amounts of public allocations. There is only one government-run music institution in Norway, the Norwegian Concert Institute, which was established in 1968 in order to provide access to live music for the population at large. The Norwegian Concert Institute organizes more than 7000 events annually throughout the country. Most of these are concerts in schools and day-care centres, but over 300 ordinary concerts are also held within a wide range of musical genres.
There are four national institutions that receive full funding for operating expenses: the Oslo Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bergen Philharmonic Orchestra, the Norwegian National Opera and the Norwegian National Ballet.

The Kvens - a newly discovered minority in Ruija (Northern Norway)
From Ullsfjorden (click the pictures for a bigger image) f old have the Kvens lived in the Land of Ruija on the coast of the Arctic Ocean. The Kvens are Finnish-speaking people who are living in the land which they call Ruija that is Northern Norway today. The word kven was known already in the ninth century and the Kven People live scattered in the Land of Ruija both on the coast and in the valleys of Ruija and in Swedish and Finnish Lapland. Map of Kveeniland There were small Kven villages between the Lapps and the Sami People. About 200 - 300 years ago a large number of Finns immigrated into the Land of Ruija and in this way the Finnish- speaking population increased considerably. Today the number of Kvens is estimated to be about 5000 - 8000 people and recently the President of the Sami Parliament has agreed to co-operate with the Kvens. The Sami People have also had to suffer from the Norwegian policy of assimilation, which the the new government, fortunately, seems to have rejected.
From the Saana- lake
The Land of Ruija (that is Lapland for English-speakers) is the name that the Kvens gave to their homeland. The Kvens and Kven culture are, therefore, a mixture of the old Kvens and the newer immigrants.

Norway. T he demolition of the Bamiyan Buddhas in March 2001 caused outcries of disgust around the world, including Scandinavia. Yet, at the same time, collectors and museums continued to drain Afghanistan of its cultural heritage. This article examines a Norwegian case, the first- to seventh-century ad fragments of Buddhist manuscripts from Afghanistan presently owned by the Norwegian businessman Mr Martin Schøyen. As widespread plundering is already a fact and valuable artefacts are in circulation, any line of action must represent a compromise between conflicting considerations. Organizations such as SPACH and the Afghan Museum in Exile have arrived at the conclusion that they must acquire important cultural artefacts themselves to secure their return to Afghanistan. This is, of course, a difficult policy to pursue, as it could stimulate black-market trading and plundering in Afghanistan (and other places). Still, the International Council of Museums (ICOM) and UNESCO support this policy. In The Times (June 22, 2002) Colin Renfrew also suggested that the Schøyen manuscripts should be donated to the UNESCO-approved Afghan Museum in Exile.
  • Several examples of repatriation demonstrate that corrupt third world governments place antiquities back on the black-market.

NATURE, LIFE AND CULTURE IN ARCTIC NORWAY About the course Course description Duration and extent The duration of the course is one semester, and each of the three modules qualifies for 10 ECTS-credits on successful completion of the examination. There is a separate exam for each module and students can therefore choose to attend only one or two of the modules. However, the three parts is meant to constitute an entity and the three modules together thus represent a full course load for one semester. The teaching component of each module is approximately 40 hours, which include both classroom lessons and guidance related to exam essays. The duration of each module will be 6-7 weeks, with 1-2 weeks set aside for essay writing. Target groups The course is specially designed for foreign students taking it as a part of their undergraduate studies and for foreign students at more advanced levels who want to increase their knowledge about North Norwegian society. The course is open to all students registered on a university-level course elsewhere, or qualifying for registration to such a course. Teaching methods Course content The detailed content of each module is tentative and subject to change related to the personnel responsible for lectures and course activities.

Indian cultural diplomacy takes centre stage in Norway By Anita Joshua Oslo Feb. 9. When the Royal Norwegian Embassy in New Delhi organised a series of cultural events in India last year to commemorate 50 years of the diplomatic relations between the two countries, many on the sub-continent saw it as just a celebration to mark the passage of a milestone in time. But, eager as the Norwegian Government is to change the `donor-recipient' equation between Norway and India and move towards a partnership, it has evidently zeroed in on culture as an area where a relationship on an equal footing is possible. In fact, given India's rich and diverse cultural heritage, the Norwegians are candid in acknowledging that this is an area where they have more to gain than give.
