Norway's rugged nature and harsh climate strongly influenced the lives of the first inhabitants who chose to make their homes along our wind swept coast over 10,000 years ago. In the first art, found in petroglyphs thousands of years old, Norwegian ancestors emerge from the mists of time to tell of their way of life, of hunting and fishing, of how they came to flourish in the land that stretches all the way to the Barents Sea.
Excavations of burial mounds have uncovered beautiful handicrafts, delicate woodcarvings and ships of superb design. The vessels built by the Vikings were the precursors to boats still built and utilised in coastal communities today. For hundreds of years, the Viking ships embodied the very essence of Norway and made it possible for the Norwegian Vikings to voyage to other countries for trade.
In addition to one of the medieval stave churches, there are three other Norwegian cultural monuments on the UNESCO World Heritage list: the petroglyphs in Alta in Finnmark county; the Bryggen Wharf in Bergen and the old mining town of Røros in central Norway.
The development of Norwegian fine art began to accelerate in the first half of the 19th century with the advent of Romanticism. It was largely introduced by Norwegian artists living outside Norway, perhaps fuelled by their longing for the sights and smells of home. Painters from the Düsseldorf school were responsible for the first breakthrough in painting. This led up to the end of the 1800s, which heralded the golden age of Norwegian painting. At the same time, other art forms began to develop at a rapid pace. The three greatest names in Norwegian art all lived at that time:

A brief summary.
I n the texts on these pages you'll find references to several Sami groups. Even though the Sami's are one people that share a common past, there has been a lot of differentiation over the ages. The Sami's are not such a homogeneous group one could be made to believe after reading some of the descriptions found in english literature and on some websites.
Those who have looked carefully at the images on these pages where Sami's wear traditional clothes, might have noted that there's quite a variety. This might be the most obvious difference, yet there's several others as in the traditional cultural expressions such the handicraft and in the various forms of "singing" ie: the joik.
The Sami language also differs quite a lot from area to area, and when one person travels from one end of the Sami nation to the other the difference gets that large that the dialects gets mutually incomprehensible.
Since the Scandinavian languages Danish, Norwegian and Swedish is considered to be separate languages, it is not wrong to talk about different Sami languages as well since the differences is larger than among those three Scandinavian ones. One colour is given for each of the Sami groups.

Culture
Norway is a young nation with a long history, especially as a maritime nation. In spite of being joined to Denmark for 400 years, Norway retained a strong cultural tradition of its own, which, together with cultural impulses from abroad, produced its own unique diversity. This can be seen not only in museums and galleries, but also in the landscape. In addition to its music, literature and art, Norwegian culture is evident in the traditional national costumes, or bunads, which are worn with pride on special occasions such as weddings, christenings and of course on 17 May, the Norwegian national day. The Saami are the indigenous people of Norway and are today a minority group. They have their own parliament and live mainly in the county of Finnmark in northern Norway. The Saami people traditionally make their living from reindeer herding, hunting and fishing. They are proud of their heritage and produce beautiful arts and crafts. Norway History and Culture
History Norway's first settlers arrived over 10,000 years ago at the end of the Ice Age. These early hunters and gatherers followed the glaciers as they retreated north, pursuing migratory reindeer herds. The country's greatest impact on history was during the Viking Age, a period thought to have begun with the plundering of England's Lindisfarne monastery by Nordic pirates in 793 AD. Over the next century, the Vikings made raids throughout Europe, establishing settlements along the way. Viking leader Harald Fairhair unified Norway around 900 and King Olaf, adopting the religion of the lands he had conquered, converted the people to Christianity a century later.

Cultural Heritage
A country's cultural heritage includes all traces of human activity in the physical environment. These are irreplaceable sources of information on people's lives and activities, and on the historical development of artistic and technical skills. Because monuments and sites and cultural environments are non-renewable resources, their management must be based on a long-term perspective. Cultural monuments and sites are a source of emotional and aesthetic experience for many people, and modern society can benefit from the preservation and active use of its heritage. The Directorate for Cultural Heritage is responsible for the management of all archaeological and architectural monuments and sites and cultural environments in accordance with the relevant legislation. The Directorate is under the Ministry of the Environment and plays a central role in public environmental management. Each county has a service responsible for cultural conservation in connection with the general administration of cultural affairs. The tasks of this service are to advise the county administration on questions of cultural conservation and to ensure that protected monuments and sites and cultural environments are taken into account in planning processes at the county and the municipal level. The S¡mediggi (Sami Parliament) has the same tasks as the county cultural heritage service in the Saami areas.

Views on which parts of our cultural heritage are most worth preserving change over time, and are related to both technical and political priorities. At one time, protection of individual monuments and imposing buildings was the most important priority in cultural conservation. Today, there is more focus on the conservation of integrated cultural environments, monuments and sites that tell us something about ordinary people's lives and activities. A cultural environment means an area where monuments and objects form part of an integrated whole. New proposals for protection orders give much more priority than only a few years ago to how single objects can be preserved as part of a functional context, and how this context can be maintained for posterity.
