which previously had only been passed on by word of mouth from generation to generation. Many of these stories shared common roots with folk tale tradition in other countries and if you were to read one today, you would doubtless recognize many familiar elements. Our most famous author, Henrik Ibsen , found inspiration in folk tales when writing his play "Peer Gynt" and most people have heard "In the Hall of the Mountain King", music which was written for the play by Edvard Grieg The Norwegian painter, Edvard Munch , is today regarded as one of the greatest of modern artists. Although he is perhaps most famous for the painting "Scream", he painted many other outstanding works. Culture
Norwegian architecture is renowned for its unique stave churches - among the oldest wooden buildings on earth - which have one foot in the Viking Age and the other in the 11th-century early Christian era. Norway holds on to many of its cultural traditions and it's not uncommon to see elaborate folk costumes worn at weddings and other festive events. Traditional folk dancing, singing and storytelling (often featuring trolls) are also popular. The country has produced a wealth of artistic talent including the painter Edvard Munch, composer Edvard Grieg, sculptor Gustav Vigeland and playwright Henrik Ibsen. Norway has also produced three winners of the Nobel Prize for Literature: Bjornstjerne Bjornson, Sigrid Undset and Knud Hamsun. Norwegian dishes include laks (grilled or smoked salmon), reker (boiled shrimp) and torsk (cod). Popular at Christmas time is lutefisk (dried cod made near-gelatinous by soaking in lye), which is definitely an acquired taste. A common sight on most breakfast tables is sweet brown goat cheese called geitost and pickled herring. Alcohol may be hard to find in some rural communities where virtual prohibition is the norm.

Country Info Norway Introduction Norway General Data Norway Maps Norway Culture ... Norway Time and Date Norway Culture Back to Top Norway has preserved a rich folk culture that retains elements from the Viking age. Norwegians today have a great interest in preserving folk art and music. The collecting and recording of folk music is supported by the government. Modern Norwegian culture has evolved from the great flowering of the arts that occurred in the 19th century under the influence of national romanticism. Early expressions of a truly Norwegian style were produced by painter Johan Christian Dahl and composer Edvard Grieg. Other important artists include playwright Henrik Ibsen, writer Knut Hamsun, composer Christian Sinding, painter Edvard Munch, and sculptor Gustav Vigeland, whose sculpture park in Oslo has gained international attention. Located on the outskirts of Europe and with much of its inland population almost completely isolated until the 20th century, Norway has been able to preserve much of its old folk culture. On the other hand, as seafarers and traders the Norwegians have always received fresh cultural stimuli from abroad. A number of Norwegians have made important contributions in return, notably the playwright Henrik Ibsen and the composer Edvard Grieg. The Norwegian recipients of the Nobel Prize for Literature are Bjørnstjerne Bjørnson, Knut Hamsun, and Sigrid Undset. Permanent theatres have been established in several cities, and the state traveling theatre, the Riksteatret, organizes tours throughout the country, giving as many as 1,200 performances annually. The Norwegian Opera, opened in 1959, requires state subsidies (as do most other theatres). Films in Norway are subject to censorship, primarily on grounds of violence and, to a lesser extent, erotic content. The production of Norwegian-made feature films is subsidized, but they usually number about 10 each year.

Norway History
The country's national identity is hard to separate from the Vikings or Norsemen who set out by sea to conquer the world - and met with a surprising degree of success. The Norse explorer Leif Eriksson may well have been the first European to visit North America, around AD 1000 (predating Columbus by about 500 years). It's thought that he landed in Newfoundland or New England and established a settlement known as Vinland. The Black Death reached Norway in 1349, killing an estimated two-thirds of the population and leaving the weakened nation easy prey for its powerful Scandinavian neighbors. For more than 500 years, Norway was governed by Denmark or Sweden, who treated it as a rustic, uncultured backwater. It was not until 1905 that the country finally gained its independence. This relatively recent transformation to nationhood helps explain the deep-rooted patriotism of most Norwegians. When Norway was overrun by Germany during World War II, resistance was fierce - everyone from schoolteachers to fishermen organized to fight against the occupation.

Culture and the arts
In the minds of foreigners, Norwegian arts and culture are generally associated with a mixture of Viking Age woodcarving and animal ornaments, stave church decoration, rose painting, folk and national costumes, and a unique folk music tradition that is still strong in certain communities. Other elements of this image include the world-famous dramatist Henrik Ibsen (1828-1906), composer Edvard Grieg (1843-1907), painter Edvard Munch (1863-1944) and Knut Hamsun (1859-1952), who was awarded the Nobel Prize for Literature. The development of Norwegian pictorial art, music, literature and architecture is naturally richer and more diversified than these four names may indicate. Pictorial art, which in the 17th and 18th centuries mainly consisted of church decorations painted by German and Danish artists, found its Norwegian expression in the 19th century landscape painters. Later came naturalists like Erik Werenskiold and Christian Krohg and expressionists like Edvard Munch. In the mid-20th century, artists like the German immigrant Rolf Nesch and Kai Fjell influenced Norwegian painting. Today, Håkon Bleken, Knut Rose and Odd Nerdrum are well-known artists on both the national and the international scene. In many ways, it was the national uprising against union with Sweden and the search for a Norwegian national identity that was the inspiration and driving force behind Norwegian art and culture in the 19th century. This also applied to music, where the national-romantic violin virtuoso Ole Bull played a major role. Edvard Grieg also used tunes and harmonies from folk music in his compositions. The best known modern composer of international format today is Arne Nordheim. Many young classical and jazz musicians have won recognition on the international musical scene in recent years, for example Leif Ove Andsnes, Truls Mørk and Jan Garbarek.

http://www.ssb.no/museer_en/main.html
Culture statistics. Norwegian museums and collections, 2002 6 museum objects per Norwegian The Norwegian museums had registered 27 million objects in 2002, or about 6 objects per inhabitant. Almost 42 per cent of the objects were natural history objects, whereas 37 per cent were photographs. Only 2 per cent of the objects were historical fine art objects. Nearly 44 per cent of the objects belong to the social history museums, and 29 per cent belong to the mixed social history and natural history museums. 78 per cent or 214 of the museums in the statistics are social history museums, whereas 10 per cent are art museums. 41 per cent of all the objects belong to museums located in Oslo. Hordaland and Sør-Trøndelag counties have 11 and 9 per cent respectively of the objects. 8.3 million visitors The museum statistics for 2002 covered 276 Norwegian museums, but 2 of these had not been open to the public. The open museums had in total more than 8.3 million visits. The greatest museums with more than 100 000 visitors each represented about 5 per cent of the museums and had 47 per cent of the total visitors. The smallest museums, 15 museums, had under 1 000 visits each in 2002. The museums in Oslo had the highest number of visitors in 2002. Just over 40 per cent of all the visits are in the Oslo-museums. The museums in Oslo cover about 12 per cent of the museums in the statistics. In Hordaland county, which has some more museums than Oslo, there were almost 1 million visits, or about 11 per cent of the total. In Sør-Trøndelag there were 800 000 visits. Aust-Agder had less visits. The six museums in this county had about one half per cent, or 40 000 visits to the museums.

San Antonio This page was last updated by Carolynne White March 30, 2001 Even the potato, thought of as almost as Norwegian as brown goats' cheese, originally arrived from abroad. Norwegians celebrated the potato's 250th anniversary last year. What food, then, is Norwegian? Asked which dish we think of first as Norwegian, 65 per cent of us reply meatcakes, while 36 per cent think of lamb and cabbage stew and 23 per cent reply cod. A nationwide survey carried out in January 1994, in connection with the Government's promotion "Competitive Strategies for Norwegian Food", showed distinct regional preferences where dishes are concerned. While meatcakes rank first in all regions, westerners rank potato dumplings second, and Oslo-dwellers rank "lutefisk" (dried cod steeped in lye) third, just ahead of dried mutton ribs and fresh cod.
