It contains detailed descriptions of all the best places to go, including some great small town festivals that I would of otherwise missed. The book also has many hikes included, mostly in the Canadian Rockies. I budgeted to spend around $50 a night for motels, and found that this book described many good choices in this price range but also includes campgrounds and more expensive places. Overall, I found it to be very current, not only for restaurants and the like but also coverage of issues such as overcrowding in the national parks, which I found an interesting addition. 5 Stars Plus!

Northwest Ordinance
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia.
The Northwest Ordinance (formally the An Ordinance for the Government of the Territory of the United States, North-West of the River Ohio , and also known as the Freedom Ordinance ) was an act of the Continental Congress of the United States passed on July 13 under the Articles of Confederation . The primary effect of the ordinance was the creation by Northwest Territory as the first organized territory of the United States out of the region around the Great Lakes north and west of the Ohio River . On August 7 , the U.S. Congress affirmed the Ordinance with slight modifications under the Constitution Arguably the most important single piece of legislation passed by the Continental Congress, it established the precedents by which the United States would expand westward across North America by the admission of new states , rather than by the expansion of existing states. The banning of slavery in the territory had the effect of establishing the Ohio River as the boundary between free and slave territory in the region between the Appalachian Mountains and the Mississippi River . This division helped set the stage for the balancing act between free and slave states that was the basis the most critical political question in American politics in the 19th century until the Civil War Table of contents 1 History 2 Effects of the legislation 2.1 Abolition of state claims

Yellowknife city (regional capital), history
Indigenous nations have lived around Yellowknife Bay for thousands of years. The historic occupants were the Athapaskan-speaking Dogrib people, hunters of caribou. The Dogrib were displaced briefly in the early 19th century by the Yellowknife band of the Chipewyan nation, who moved into the area to participate in the fur trade. The bay, and eventually the city, were named for the Yellowknife band, whose name is believed to derive from their yellow knife blades hammered out of native copper. Scottish-born Canadian fur trader and explorer Sir Alexander Mackenzie came into the area in 1789, traveling down the river that now bears his name. His firm, the North West Company, operated a fur-trading post at Fort Providence near the western shore of Great Slave Lake until the 1820s. The area attracted outside interest again in the late 1890s when prospectors discovered gold there. However, the deposits were not extensive enough to spark serious mining activities. Agreement-in-Principle (AIP): In an Agreement-in-Principle, the parties lay out in more detail the issues they agreed to discuss in the Framework Agreement. Reaching an AIP often takes longer than any other stage in the negotiation process. The AIP should contain all the elements of the eventual settlement, describing the parties' agreements on substantive issues like land, resources, self-government, and financial benefits. Final Agreement: A Final Agreement is the outcome of successful land, resource and governance negotiations. It details agreements reached between the Aboriginal group, the province or territory, and Canada on all issues at hand, including resources, self-government, financial benefits, and land ownership or management. A Final Agreement must be ratified by all parties. Framework Agreement: An agreement reached by the Parties at the beginning of negotiations that sets out the basis and "ground rules" for negotiating towards a Final Agreement. The Deh Cho Framework Agreement describes the objectives of the negotiations, the roles of the Parties, an initial list of subjects to be negotiated, the approval process, the anticipated time frame of the negotiations and how negotiations will be funded.

This study forms the geographic basis of the Nunavut Territory. ITC proposes the creation of a Nunavut Territory as part of a comprehensive settlement of Inuit land claims in the Northwest Territories. The Nunavut Proposal calls for the Beaufort Sea and Yukon North Slope areas used by the Inuvialuit to be included in the Nunavut Territory. That same year, due to development pressure in the Beaufort Sea area, the Inuvialuit split from ITC to negotiate a separate land claim agreement. Also that same year, a federal electoral boundaries commission recommends dividing the Northwest Territories into two federal electoral districts: Nunatsiaq and the Western Arctic. This recommendation is put in effect for the 1979 federal election.

The Northwest Territory
Congress passed the Northwest Ordinance of 1787 to provide for the government of the entire region. The Ordinance was based in part on a plan drawn up by a committee headed by Thomas Jefferson in 1784. It stated that no fewer than 3 nor more than 5 states were eventually to be formed from the region and set down an orderly procedure for the creation of these states. In the initial stage, the entire Northwest Territory would be ruled by a governor, a secretary, and three judges appointed by Congress; in the second stage, when the free adult males residing in one of the territories numbered 5,000, they could elect a territorial legislature and send a non-voting delegate to Congress; and when the population of any territory reached 60,000, it would be eligible to enter the Union as a new state equal to the original states. Slavery was prohibited in the territory.
Ohio was the first state admitted (1803) to the Union from the Northwest Territory. U.S. control of the less populous frontier areas was challenged by the presence of British trading posts in the Northwest and was firmly established only in the aftermath of the War of 1812.

Ohio
Ohio is a Midwestern state in the eastern center of the United States . It was the first and remains the eastern-most state in the Midwest admitted to the Union under the Northwest Ordinance. Its U.S. postal abbreviation is OH . Ohio is an Iroquois word meaning "great water." The name refers to the Ohio river that forms its southern border. The US Navy has named a series of ships USS Ohio in honor of this state.
History
Ohio, the region north of the Ohio River and south of the Great Lakes , was originally controlled by various native tribes, primarily the Iroquois at the time of European colonization. During the 18 th century, the French set up a system of trading posts to control the fur trade in the region. In 1754 , France and Great Britain fought a war known in North America as the French and Indian War . As a result of the Treaty of Paris , the French ceded control of Ohio and the old Northwest to Great Britain.

" First International Conference on Human Environment in Northern Regions "
December. Sapporo, Hokkaido, Japan
Hosted by Hokkaido Governor Naohiro Dougakinai, this inaugural conference brought together representatives from the Canadian provincial governments of Alberta, British Columbia, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Ontario, Saskatchewan, and Northwest Territories; United States state governments of Alaska, Idaho, Minnesota, North Dakota, Oregon, Washington, and Wisconsin; and representatives from the capital cities of Finland, Norway, and Sweden. The conference made evident a multitude of environmental, climactic, economic and social commonalities faced by residents in northern regions.
Participants at the conference came to understand that, as regions with similar climatic conditions, they shared many environmental challenges. They discovered that the way one northern region addressed a particular issue might apply to similar issues in many - if not all - northern regions. Government representatives realized that improved communication and cooperation could vastly enhance the way of life for all residents of the North. Furthermore, delegates acknowledged the value of holding regular meetings to discuss these commonalities. They vowed to work diligently as a whole on issues of shared importance.
