  • In the Central McKenzie Valley of the Northwest Territories, the timing of key events and their relative impact on the structural history and generation history is widely acknowledged as associated with high risk, principally because of its uncertainty.
Why not remove this uncertainty? While it is common practice to assume these parameters as part of software-driven basin modelling work or structural reconstructions, Geotrack has pioneered efforts worldwide to measure these critical parameters directly. In the NWT, any models describing the petroleum system will be severely impaired if critical parameters such as the timing of heating events are inferred rather than controlled by direct measurement. S PECIFIC RELEVANCE TO THE NWT S COPE AND COST OF FURTHER WORK On the map overleaf, we show the location of the study wells. Each of the indicated wells have been studied using our thermal history approach and reports are available immediately. A study involving the 16 outcrop samples (shown as solid squares) is also available. We welcome suggestions for any new wells in the region, and would be pleased to make specific recommendations on target horizons for sampling. Please contact us to obtain the current pricing for each study. Alconsult International (Calgary) has assisted us on this project, and retains copies of all reports from the current mini-well series at their office to facilitate further discussion. We would be happy to answer any of your questions or work with you in devising a longer-term strategy to better understand the nature and influence of the thermal and uplift history of the region in relation to the petroleum system(s) in the region.

In 1900, the Hay River Dene of the Deh Cho territory signed Treaty 8 with the Crown in Deninue Kue (Fort Resolution). In 1921, the Crown signed Treaty 11 with eight other Deh Cho First Nations and in 1922, the Acho Dene Koe First Nation (Fort Liard) signed Treaty 11 . The Hay River Reserve was created in 1974; however, for the rest of the Deh Cho First Nations, the land components of these treaties remained to be fulfilled.

Photo: Hunt, NWT Archives In the mid-1990s, the Deh Cho First Nations submitted the Deh Cho Proposal as a basis for negotiating a land and self-government agreement with Canada; however, it was decided the proposal was not a basis for negotiation. In 1995, Government of Canada introduced the Federal Policy on Aboriginal Self-Government and Canada began to look at negotiating land and self-government agreements together.

True North: The Yukon and Northwest Territories
What can be said of the Yukon and Northwest Territories as a homeland? What does it mean to be indigenous to this area? This book offers a wealth of photographs and illustrations, as well as a lively and approachable historical text, in its documentation of the land and its people.
Canadians have always been fascinated by the North. Celebrated in song, story and motion picture, it has contributed such icons of the public consciousness as the Klondike Gold Rush, the doomed Franklin expedition, the outlaw Dan McGrew and the lady that's known as Lou, the Mad Trapper of Rat River, the Mountie who always gets his man, and the heroic Inuit hunter.
True North looks at all aspects of the region, to provide an accurate account of its past.
For many readers the most fascinating chapters will be those on the exploration of the region, featuring Eric the Red, Cabot, Frobisher, Baffin, Mackenzie, Franklin, Amundsen and many more. With the explorers came the fur trade, and the hardships involved in moving goods from England to the Canadian arctic: "...the average time from the day that a copper kettle left the company's warehouse in London until the beaver pelt that paid for it arrived was an astonishing seven years. The feat was analogous to trading with Mars."
Here also is the real story of the Klondike Gold Rushalmost as melodramatic as the Holywood version.

Land of the Midnight Sun This is the Land of the Midnight Sun and the Aurora Borealis. An incredibly vast and awesomely beautiful region, it became two separate territories in 1999. The eastern lands are known as Nunavut. The western region, home to Dene, Inuvialuit, and other northerners from around the world, is still called the Northwest Territories. Starkly beautiful, powerful and immense, our northern world is still wild and pristine. Nature rules here, in a diversity of landscapes ranging from towering mountains to rolling tundra, and from seacoast to boggy lowlands and boreal forests. The NWT's treasures include several of Canada's greatest rivers, biggest lakes and most important National Parks. Rare wildlife roams free, and millions of birds migrate through the Mackenzie Valley. Aboriginal tradition thrives in communities built on a rich fur-trade, exploration and mining heritage. Small and widely scattered, they're linked by roads, rivers or bush airlines that converge on our bustling Capital, Yellowknife.

The Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary Canada's wilderness jewel click on map to enlarge Covering an area of approximately 26,000 sq. miles, the Thelon Wildlife Sanctuary, straddling the boundary of the Northwest Territories and Nunavut in Canada's mainland Arctic, is the largest and most remote wildlife refuge on the North America continent - and possibly the world. As there is little surrounding developments in this region, the unusual forest oasis located far out on the tundra truly represents one of the last great, unaltered ecosystems on our planet. For those few fortunate enough to have ever visited this extreme remote region, the experience is like stepping back to a time when grizzly, wolves and musk-ox ruled the earth... Every year, over 300,000 caribou calve within and migrate through the Thelon Sanctuary. Click to enlarge. Musk-oxen populations in the Thelon Sanctuary and surrounding areas have flourished over the past century. During the intense studies carried out by the International Biological Program (IBP) in the 1960's, the Thelon Sanctuary was identified as a 'Biological Site of Universal Importance'.

E arly Northwest Interior culture is a tentative cultural construct. It could even be called a classificatory 'catch-all' bred of archaeological desperation. The nature of the archaeological evidence makes it difficult to determine if there is one or two or more distinct cultures in the region. A range of factors have coalesced to insure an exceptional poverty of clear archaeological evidence. Early Northwest Interior culture may have been initially represented by a technology with bifacially flaked tools but lacking a microblade technology called Northern Cordilleran (Clark ). Microblade technology was adopted later from the west, except in the northern Yukon where it was probably present at a very early date (Cinq-Mars ). There is the problem of whether the movement of microblade technology out of Alaska into the Yukon Territory, the western portion of the Mackenzie District of the Northwest Territories, and northern British Columbia, represented an actual movement of people bearing a distinctive culture or was simply microblade technology being adopted by indigenous populations. There is the additional problem of whether, in many instances, the absence of microblade technology reflects specific site function where microblades were not required rather than evidence of a culture lacking microblade technology. As has been aptly noted "...the logical and probable existence of Northwest Microblade tradition sites without microblades is an insidious problem inasmuch as identification of this tradition is dependent on the recovery of microblades or cores" (Clark

C anada's Northwest Territories sit at the top of the North American continent. People have lived there for thousands of years. This vast area is dotted with but a few small communities. The land is still unspoiled. Its immense beauty lies in its vastness and its harshness.
B etween 1985 and 1994, the Canadian Museum of Civilization carried out an archaeological research programme ( NOGAP ) in the northwestern part (in the black circle) of the continental N.W.T. in order to find out more about the history of this region.
T he Museum now opens its files and lets you follow the progress of its archaeologists as they returned from the field and wrote their reports. You can access these documents as well as the multitude of images and information they brought back.
