The early months of 2002 witnessed the majority of Alberta public and separate school teachers on strike and although short-lived, the labour situation remained strained through to the end of the last school year. Provincially arbitrated settlements were awarded over the summer resulting in the largest class sizes ever in the province’s history and the entire province in the throws of a task force on public education to help capture the priorities for education in the years to come. Ten years ago I challenged readers of the Alberta Teachers’ Association’s Social Studies Specialist Council Magazine One World to find the geography components within its mandated social studies curriculum. I suggested strongly that they would have to look very closely because what geography the Program of Studies suggested was there, but only a fine and very close review could reveal. Again today I challenge readers of the draft documentation to reveal meaningful and thoughtful principals of geographic literacy. The Program of Studies for Social Studies K-9 Consultation Draft, August 2002 states that “learning related to these [citizenship and identity] core concepts is achieved through thematically-organized content”. Six “strands” of social studies are then outlined as the content carriers for this new program of studies. Specifically “The Land: Places and People” contains what is suggested to be the geography within social studies.

But every once in a while, a couple of novices, naive young adventurers, come in with an inflatable boat, a big bag of rice, fishing gear and only the remotest idea of what it takes to do a three-week river trip like this. The wardens in Nahanni National Park Reserve do their best to talk them out of it. In the summer of 1999, a 19-year-old with a boyish look about him arrived in the dusty town of Fort Simpson in a beat-up Volkswagen he had driven across the country from his parents’ home in Ancaster, Ont. William Sommer stepped from the hot sun into the park office to ask warden Sharon Weaver about how to access the river with his kayak. “He tried to give the impression that he was really skilled, with lots of wilderness experience,” says Weaver, “but the more questions I asked about his plans, the more evasive he became. That’s when I called in Chuck, our superintendent. I was pretty certain this guy was in over his head, but he wasn’t going to listen to a 22-year-old woman.”
