British Columbia Imagine a vast land of more than a million squaremiles, fully one-third of Canada, located at the top of the world-a land of bracing blue waters, clear air and warm, welcoming people. Welcome to one of the last great frontiers: Canada's Northwest Territories. Leave your cares at home. Here's a place where you really can get away from it all! And it's fairly easy to travel to the Northwest Territories, with convenient jet airline transportation from major cities. From May through July, this is the Land of the Midnight Sun. Twenty-four hours of daylight, in which to enjoy all that there is to see and do in the Arctic. Experience the wildrivers and the tundra where no trees grow, go fishing for giant trout, see great herds of caribou on their constant migration. Or spot muskoxen and polar bears in the wild. Where else but the NWT can you play golf at midnight in broad daylight on a course consisting entirely of sand, far above the tree line? The entire population of the Northwest Territories is only 64,000, or enough to easily fit into an average size baseball stadium. One third of the residents live in the capital city of Yellowknife, with the rest living in a few small villages. The Dene and the Inuits create exquisite artwork and crafts using ancient skills likestone carving, caribou tufting and quill work. The Northwest Territories truly represent a land and culture worth exploring.

... Northwest Territories
Northwest Territories
The Northwest Territories lie north of the 60th parallel-above Saskatchewan, Alberta and eastern British Columbia-and between the Yukon and Nunavut. These dimensions represent a recent change. With the creation of Nunavut on April 1, 1999, the area of the former Northwest Territories, which stretched from the Yukon east to Baffin Island and included all of the Arctic archipelago, was reduced by approximately two-thirds, from 3 426 320 to 1 346 106 square kilometres. The ancestors of the Dene Indian people lived in the Northwest Territories some 10,000 years ago. The first Inuit are believed to have crossed the Bering Strait about 5,000 years ago. Expeditions in the 1570s were the first recorded visits by Europeans to the Northwest Territories. With the arrival of the fur traders in the late 1700s and the whalers in the 1800s, life began to change substantially for the Inuit, the Aboriginal peoples located in the North. The Europeans reshaped the North, bringing with them a new economy and way of life. Communities grew around trading posts, mission schools and Royal Canadian Mounted Police stations. In 1870, the British government transferred control of the North-Western Territory to Canada. In 1905, both Alberta and Saskatchewan were created from the Territories. Finally, in 1912, the provinces of Manitoba, Ontario and Quebec were enlarged and the Northwest Territories assumed its boundaries.

Links Discover our timeless Northern heritage The land and waters of the Northwest Territories look much as they did in the days when 18th century explorers Alexander Mackenzie and Samuel Hearne first arrived. When you paddle a river corridor or glide across a shining lake, you'll see the same undisturbed shores early travellers saw. To discover northern history for yourself, you can go where the river takes you or seek out the preserved relics of other journeys in river villages, along the Arctic coast, at Heritage Sites and in our museums and cultural centres. A history with ancient roots In the Northwest Territories, history is the saga of great journeys. About 12,000 years ago at the end of the last Ice Age, ancestors of some modern Aboriginal peoples came from the Yukon to the upper Mackenzie Valley. As the glaciers retreated, freeing Great Slave and Great Bear Lakes, the bison hunters of the western plains moved north. A campsite at Acasta Lake east of Great Bear establishes their presence some 7,000 years ago. The people began to follow the caribou onto the Barrens in summer, returning to the forest in winter. Today's Dene, who belong to a language group called Athapascan, have occupied the southern NWT for some 2,500 years, travelling and hunting in small groups.
