Later discovers and settlers included the Spanish, Germans, and Japanese and evidence of their former presence is found throughout the islands. Following the trusteeship under U.S. administration after W.W. II, the FSM is now independent and self-governing. Most linguistic and archaeological evidence indicates that the islands were first discovered and settled between two and three thousand years ago . The first settlers are often described as Austronesian speakers possessing horticultural skills and highly sophisticated maritime knowledge . These first settlers are thought to have migrated eastward from Southeast Asia to Yap. From there, some migrated south to Papua New Guinea, Solomon Islands, and New Caledonia, and later to Kiribati and the Marshall Islands. The oral histories of the Micronesian people indicate close affiliations and interactions in the past among the members of the island societies comprising the present-day FSM. The Lelu ruins in Kosrae (1400 AD) and the Nan Madol ruins of Pohnpei (1000 AD) are impressive reminders of the accomplishments of these early peoples.

Papua New Guinea Samoa, American – Unincorporated US territory in the SW Pacific, consisting of six small islands: seat of government, Pago Pago, Island of Tutuila. The Samoa-Pago Pago Diocese was established in 1982. 16% of the population is Catholic. Samoa, Western – Independent state in the SW Pacific: capital, Apia. Catholic mission work was begun in 1845. May 15, 2003 A weekly feature provided by scientists at the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory. First Historical Eruption of Anatahan Volcano, Northern Mariana Islands Eruption cloud, from the east crater of Anatahan Volcano, rising to a height of about 15,000 feet, on May 10, 2003. View from the NE side of the island, looking in a southwesterly direction. For the past week, a billowing column of dark volcanic ash has been erupting from Anatahan Volcano in the Northern Mariana Islands, burying parts of the volcano with more than 45 cm (18 inches) of ash and sending a dilute eruption cloud more than 1000 km (600 miles) to the west. This is the first eruption from the volcano in historical time, but it didn't come as much of a surprise to people familiar with Anatahan, especially to scientists of the Hawaiian Volcano Observatory (HVO) who worked there in 2001 with personnel from the Emergency Management Office (EMO) of the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands. Anatahan Volcano is a small volcanic island located 320 km (200 miles) north of Guam. The island is about 9 km (5.6 miles) long and 3 km (2 miles) wide. Anatahan is a stratovolcano that consists of the largest known caldera in the Northern Mariana Islands. In 1990, when geologists from HVO, EMO, and the University of Hawai`i examined the rock layers of Anatahan, they discovered abundant evidence of ancient explosive eruptions that sent fast-moving flows of hot ash and rocks across the island. The eruption began suddenly on the evening of May 10. No one was directly threatened by the initial activity-residents had long before evacuated the volcano, but not because of recent warnings from the volcano or officials from EMO. Most residents were evacuated in 1990 after a shallow earthquake swarm hinted at the possibility of volcanic activity; another swarm of earthquakes occurred in 1993. Any remaining residents on the island were likely driven away by destructive typhoons of the past year.

H istory of the Bahá'í Faith in the Mariana Islands First Mention T he first mention of the Bahá'í Faith in the Mariana Islands occured in 1936, when a Bahá'í from Hawaii, Mrs. Mary Sweyze, the wife of scientist Dr. Otto Herman Sweyze, joined her husband on a survey to study insects on Guam. Dr. and Mrs. Sweyze arrived on Guam on 27 April, 1936 and remained until 30 November, a period of seven months. It was during this time that Mrs. Sweyze introduced the Bahá'í Faith to members of the Manibusan family in Sinajana. This is the first mention of the name of Baha'u'llah in the Marianas of which we are aware. B etter known is the time spent on Tinian and Saipan towards the end of the Second World War, around 1945, by Mr. Paul Pettitt, a member of the United States Armed Forces. Mr. Pettitt has written an account for our records of the "first teaching conference" held on Saipan by himself and two other young Bahá'í servicemen. First Settlers I n April and May of 1954, the first Bahá'í settlers, Robert Powers, Jr. and Cynthia R. Olson, arrived on Guam, seperately. Cynthia was soon joined by her husband Edgar, better known as Olie. Soon afterwards, in July, Mrs. Mildred Mottahedeh, a well known Bahá'í of international stature, travelled through Guam as the first Bahá'í "travelling teacher." This was soon followed by the first Bahá'í Holy Day observance, and weekly advertisements of the Faith's activities in the "Guam Daily News." I n November of that same year the first presentation of Bahá'í books was made to island libraries. The Bahá'í Fund was established and contributions were soon being sent to the Bahà'í International Fund, and to a special fund to assist the persecuted Bahá'ís in Iran. Before a year had elapsed, in March l955, the first declaration of belief in Baha'u'llah by a local resident was made by a U.S. civil service worker, Mr. Charles Mackey, followed by the first mention of the Bahá'i Faith on radio, KUAM, made by Cynthia Olsen as part of the "Calendars of the World" program.
